Raymond Lam Strongly Supports Charmaine Sheh’s Performance in “My Sister of Eternal Flower”

Raymond Lam (林峯) and Kate Tsui (徐子珊) appeared at a promotion event yesterday. Raymond and Charmaine Sheh’s (佘詩曼) new TVB series, My Sister of Eternal Flower <花花世界花家姐> was accused of discriminating against mentally challenged people. Raymond pointed out that Charmaine’s character found a job in the series and was more intelligent than he was in the office. “I did not receive that particular complaint. Perhaps everyone’s perception was different!”

Viewers also complained that Charmaine replicated Roger Kwok’s (郭晉安) performance in Square Pegs <戆夫成龙>. Raymond strongly supported his partner,  “Whether it was the interpretation, body language, or tone of voice, Charmaine’s performance was very, very good. I told myself to deliver a better performance, so that we can balance out! ”

When reporters mentioned that Raymond’s ex-girlfriend, Mavis Pan (潘霜霜), may come to Hong Kong for promotional purposes, Raymond noted that he will not respond. Asked whether Raymond feared that Mavis may further provoke him, he was not willing to answer. Raymond stressed that he was currently focused on preparing for his upcoming concert.

Kate was spotted wearing the same woven bracelet that Ron Ng (吳卓羲) wore. Kate denied the rumors with Ron and noted that she got the bracelet from a master. The bracelet was intended to guard her health and many artists wore the same type of bracelet. Kate stressed that she would only date a man from outside the entertainment industry.  Asked whether she had feelings for Ron, Kate said, “The rumors have been circulating for too long; I have become numb!”

  1. Maybe it’s due to overworking, but I noticed that Raymond looks rather tired in MSOEF in general. And his skin isn’t as smooth as it was from previous series.

    1. I noted that, too. Especially in eps 4, the motor scenes. Maybe it’s because the next day after this scene, he is sent to hospital (problem with his neck).

During the time he films Fa, he has to rush it to go to China and film It’s love. He had to fly from Hubei and HK every week for the filming.

  2. I appreciate Raymond for supporting Charmaine but it’s too much for him to say that Charmaine is doing a ‘great job’ because she isn’t doing well.

Without even compared to other mentally challenged performances Charmaine is still showing weak performance in MSOEF, especially in her eyes expressions

    1. I don’t understand why some people can’t just accept that she’s not a good actor. Specially this particular role, so painful to watch. I find it funny that she was upset for not winning best actress award, isn’t it obvious?!?!

      1. @Lol,

I have a hard time watching this as well. She’s a good actress in many other words, just not this one. I believe someone mentioned that not everyone can portray such a character and that’s what distinguishes a versatile actress from a mediocre one.

Although I still like Charmaine as an actress, she really disappointed me in this one. The fact that her role requires he to have on minimal make up also revealed her age.

If Charmaine was ever upset about not winning last year, it was due to CBML, which I thought she did fairly well. She was funny. It would make me laugh if she was nominated as Best Actress for this role. However, I believe Heaven and Earth might be an anniversary series this year so she still has a chance to get nominated.

      2. Correction, many other series, not *words.

      3. @Chriselle

Charmaine is lacking as an actress and this series just proved it more clearly. Simple as this.

    2. Its no no attack on the TVB viewers, but somewhat the Majority of those TVB soap Chacers seem to lack taste and lack demand for quality. Charmine is leaving tvb is’nt she!? is very unblikely Charm is going to leave clean or fresh for the mainland is she? Its enemy is not the viewer but possiblely the producers to lack Charm step in to any mistake? Soap is opposite reality, so the spastics whos sensative need’nt over react and find those behind all the issues or just get on with the family cooking, lol

    3. I’ve yet to see Charmaine excel in any one series. She’s really not outstanding when you compare her to the likes of Ada Choi, Flora Chan and Maggie Cheung.

That’s not to say I dislike her, though. I do think she has a lot of screen presence, much like Jessica Hsuan, whom I also find lacking in the acting arena, but enjoy watching nonetheless.

  3. Of course he’s going to say she did a great job it’s not like he’s going to tell the media that Charmaine did a horrible job….

    1. @Rain, Lol, I agree. It amuses me when he says “very, very, good.” He’s making an argument that is obviously not convincing and he’s trying to hard to back up his co-star.

      1. That’s what I meant. Raymond doesn’t need to back her up that much since audience can see how bad her acting in this series but I can see that his intention is good.

    2. @Rain: I know… I hope Charmaine didn’t think that she would win TV queen with this series. For some reason, many actors/actresses think they have a higher chance to win it with roles like this because it is a ‘breakthrough’….. but not even close on this one.

      1. she won’t win no matter what cause the award is fixed and she’s leaving TVB so good or bad performance won’t matter at all!

      2. @ exoidus

This is what I thought too when they talk about Charmaine hoping to win TV queen (which are all unsubstantiated speculation since Charmaine never said such thing be it now or for CBML). Not to say that there’s absolutely no chance to win. Raymond Wong and Sheren Teng won their respective award despite being non-managed artists. But, the chances are lower.

  4. Maybe it is just a bad picture with bad light exposure.

Good they have comraderie but well… we can see for ourselves Ray. Even YOUR performance got some criticisms.

  5. Actually due to many comparing Charmaine & Roger Kwok, I rewatched a few episodes of Life Made Simple, and I didn’t find Roger Kwok good in his acting too.

I don’t find anything wrong with him in supporting his co-star, I find Charmaine did a okay job with her acting though the draw to this series is Ray’s funny antics.

    1. The draw to this series is Raymond’s funny side and the things he did in this series are enjoyable and laughable. Props to Raymond for taking a funny character and show a funny side of him. This character is challenging and new and Raymond is funny so I conclude that he’s doing a great job. It’s because of his character that I enjoyed this series and able to laugh.

On the other hand, Charmaine is the downside of this series.

I don’t like Toby too. It’s obvious that she’s only in this because of her father.

      1. I’m watching this series for Pierre Ngo too. I remember he did very well in his mentally challenged role in TRB before and he is great in any character.

      2. Personally, I think Toby’s acting improved a lot in Fa.

    2. Me too, I didn’t find Roger was good in his role as a slow-witted person. Since I haven’t see Charmaine’s “Fa” serie, I can’t really comment. Myolie Wu has my vote for portraying a girl with mental disability so far. (sorry, I can’t recall which show that was. All I remember is that Lau Gar Liang plays the older brother). As for Charmaine and Roger Kwok’s hair-dos, they are pretty awful. My work experience entails having daily contacts with people who have disabilities. I can tell you that their hair dos are not like that as in both shows, in fact, the parents try to dress their kids exactly like the mainstream kids in order to fit in. The producers should make further attempts to understand how these people dress on a daily basis instead of assuming they all have lousy haircuts.

      1. Charmaine’s hair in real life was short at the time she filmed this. She cut her hair for When Heaven Burns. Her hair didn’t have the chance to grow yet or perhaps she wanted to cut it short. Her hair looks better when it’s styled with side-swept bangs, but that look would be too modern and intelligent for this character. Furthermore, since it’s a comedy, I suppose the producer wanted some exaggeration in her looks and volia, we have what we’re seeing.

Btw, her haircut and big eyes are very distracting as well. I think I’m calling quit after 4 episodes.

      2. Agreed. So far Myolie has my vote too and won a Most Improved Award. The show is Golden Faith and it was aired in 2002. It was a great show with a great mentally challenged potrayal from Myolie and she was just a newbie.

      3. Power Chan in GF also have a better performance than Ah Wong in my opinion.

  6. kate backing char. doesn’t mean anything since she’s an even worse actress than char. so in her eyes char, is doing excellent.

    1. It’s Raymond who back Charmaine, not Kate. Kate didn’t give any comment about Charmaine’s performance.

    2. LF backed Charmaine, not Kate. Kate only said about her scandal with Ron. If Kate backed Charmaine in another report then I don’t know.

    3. @exoidus, if you read the artical clearly, kate didnt back char its raymond.

  7. it is just me? i think Rays hair looks so ugly it’s def. not cool. is he starting to bald or something?

    1. Don’t be worried, he still has a lot of hair and no sign of hair lost.

      1. LOL he got a few already but got exposed lately. Sure it won’t take long before he’s hunting again. Again remember news about him getting caught for visiting prostitutes…

    2. Maybe in your eyes everything about Raymond look bad 😛

  8. exoidus, no one perfect in the world, i like ray who he is now.

  9. Totally of topic, but does anyone know what Lin Jun Jie is up to right now? I dont have time to search the net, so I can only keep updated on Jayne Stars. If you have any idea Jayne please let me know 😀

    1. you mean JJ lin?, i think he has either weibo account and twitter that you can follow.

      1. Yeah I mean JJ Lin 😀 Well, I don’t have the time to keep a blog or weibo and follow, but thanks for telling me 🙂

  10. but i have to admit that char act like 3 yrs old at first slowly to 5 yrs, but she really cute.

  11. To me she might be over exaggerating and acting really young, but can’t that be the personality of her character? I think she is doing a fine job, obviously not her best but it’s deece.
As for Ray’s performance I think it’s the best part of the series, he’s the one who actually causes laughter and its a different kind of role. Aat first he was kinda overacting in my opinion but I think he’s eased into it and is doing a great job!!

    1. It is over exaggerating because her acting is deliberate. If it was natural, you wouldn’t even notice that. If this is fine job, then I suppose there are plenty of fine actors then. Come on, it was deliberate, it was conscious, it wasn’t even as described. How can that be a fine job?? Decent is no longer enough. It must be good. Good as in natural. Good as in at least not so calculative, every bite of the lips, every stare, every movement of mouth, every hand gesture. She was never quite natural to start off with, but now with this role it is made so much more noticeable. If this is a fine job, then technically there is no bad job.

    2. This I agree because Ray gives a lot of laughter in the series and I don’t mind him exaggerate because it’s what he’s supposed to do. Raymond is doing a great job!

Charmaine is doing a horrible and fake job. She OVER EXAGGERATE and her performance is unnatural. She’s just like a normal person trying too hard to pretend as a mentally challenged person. It’s fake. She can’t make me laugh because I’m cringing at her unnatural acting and unbelievable character.

      1. Her expressions, the slowness and the high pitch…. what wonderful TVB series, NOT!

  12. All these criticisms about Charmaine reminds me of when she first entered the industry. Many people criticized that she couldn’t act and had a chicken voice. She wasn’t happy about those comments. I wonder what her response will be now if the media asked her.

    1. I think she has hardened herself and is immune.

      1. I also think she’s tougher and has gained experience from the all the criticisms she received in the past. There probably were always viewers criticizing her acting, even after she received the Best Actress award. But since this mentally-challenged role is very different from other characters she previously played, I wonder if it will affect her image as an actress. It’s better for a newcomer to get criticized for their acting because after all, it’s more justified that they’re beginners. But for a veteran to get criticized is kinda a slap in the face and there’s more to lose, I assume.

      2. No it won’t change her fans’ opinion. Her fans will feel she has been shortchanged and that her performance lived up to expectations; those who disagree like myself will continue to say why she didn’t. No one will equate being a veteran as being a credible or even good actress. Some more experienced than she was fared worse, so she wasn’t the only one singled out. She won’t lose face; I don’t think she expects to win awards anyway. And she is still rich, she still is endorsement queen if she wants to be, she is ever popular. She has charisma, she has a face viewers like, sometimes you like her charisma so much you tend to overlook her acting capabilities. I am not saying she is the worst actress, or a bad one, I am saying this role is perhaps one she can’t do justice to. There are no easy or difficult roles, some look easy but may be difficult, but the truth is she has stretched herself. Her fans will think this role is her challenge as she herself might think so and she did rather well. For me it is time to admit rather well is just not good enough. Even for her standards, she did poorly. She could do better. Maybe as she eased more into the role, who knows. But frankly not that I am striking her down before she began, having followed her career from her 1st series until now, and she is one of those I can fairly say I have followed from the very beginning, like Myolie, I can say when I heard of the role, I knew she will be lacking. Sometimes a capable actress can be great, sometimes a bad actress can improve, sometimes a good actress can go stagnant and not do any better. For this role, it is complicated. She was mediocre to begin with, so with such a challenging role, if you can look away from the deliberateness, and her scene per scene acting which has always been a problem, yes, you can say she did ok, since no one can be THAT bad. But look at it as a whole, the feeling is when I watched her in this role, I felt it was so calculative, nothing was natural, she tried too hard to the point it shows. Good she did her research, so it just shows she just isn’t capable in the first place, even with the research. Maybe time is a factor; maybe give her more time she could have done better.

I still feel her best acting was in An Herbalist Affair because that character suited her. Even in BTROC she showed flashes of great moments. In many series, she showed some good moments and I realise all of those are roles where she is required to be a bit of herself. Once she is out of herself that is her comfort zone, it shows. Glaringly, like Moonlight, her worst performance ever, but heralded even by herself as improved performance. I hated that performance, she was absolutely annoying. Some of you quoted Fox On Snowy Mountain or whatever the full title is. Yes, her acting was raw but watch again, she did well because that was her, soft spoken, lady like, girly, graceful. If it fits her, she will do well. In HSDS, she did very well in a villainous role which again fits her personality in terms of beauty, grace, etc. Even in You’re Hired (?) with Dayo Wong, frankly anyone next to Dayo Wong will do well. Why? He is such a force to be reckoned with, you won’t notice anyone else, you just notice him. Yes she was kinda funny, kinda cute, kinda ok, but kinda is on long term basis is not good enough.

I can say the same criticisms against Tavia, who is a more capable actress BUT not as capable as her fans may think her to be. Myolie as well, and I count myself as a fan but she has a different problem.

So right now for Charmaine, I like her as a person. I find her hardworking, I find her diligent, she keeps her head down and her work ethics is fantastic. She has a face I like to watch, even if she was bad, I still like to watch her. But truthfully as an actress, she is at best, mediocre. I don’t think her rise to fame is accidental or by sheer luck. She has a viewers’ face, viewers like to see her. It is a rather quality to be well liked generally. It is only so much luck when offered jobs, the rest is her credit. But strip away all that, as an actress, let’s be honest shall we. Her entire body of work, tell me, was she ever THAT convincing?

      3. Such a hard comment on Charmaine, Funn. I don’t find Charmaine’s acting that bad. In this Fa series, her acting isn’t too bad. She is somehow exaggerated and unconvincing, but it isn’t sucked.

Anyone next to Dayo will be good? Well I don’t think so. If it isn’t her own effort, Dayo can’t help.

      4. Pretty tired of such show of support which is to me undeserving. I don’t get the total adulation or that mediocrity is good enough. Isn’t being convincing the hallmark of a good acting? So if you think she is unconvincing, doesn’t that make her performance bad? Or is acting these days should be unconvincing to be good?

At least my criticism is on her acting. There are far worse comment unless of course criticism on acting stings more, then yes I am pretty hard on her, as an actress.

    2. Actually her acting skills has always been lacking. I think she’s also immune to this and she has high EQ

  13. Poor Ah Sheh. There are so many negative comments about her in MSOEF.

Although I agree that she is imitating Ah Wong and is inconsistent with her disability, I thought her character is very adorable and sweet. I feel her acting is entertaining without much exaggeration.

On the other hand, I don’t think I could stand looking at LF any longer. His grin and grimace are just so fake and hideous. So sick of his “Chok” look.

He gives the same “Chok” grin when he greets his fans which shows how “sincere” he is.

Why is it in most of the series that he’s in, he’s always the “prince”, with money or with exceptional abilities? I could name at least six series: 1) A Taste of Love, 2) The Last Breakthrough, 3) Lethal Weapons of Love and Passion, 4) Moonlight Resonance 5)Growing Through Life 6)The Mysteries of Love.

I don’t know if his fans are brainwashed by the “princely” characters that he portrays, but how can there be no backlash to what he did to Mavis Pan? Do you fans really believe he genuinely loved Mavis Pan and had considered marrying her? True love won’t spend first date at the bed.

I’m just angry that LF used his fame and wealth to sleep with whichever bimbo he pleases yet his image is not scourged!

Majority of you are women too! Why do we talk about Charmaine being gold-digger and a poor actress when she worked so hard and had never cheat? Maybe this is the “glass-ceiling” that Jayne and few others mentioned before but even worse for being a FEMALE and an ASIAN.

As a woman we should give equal and fair treatment to the actresses and actors. Why reprimand only the actresses and not the actors as well?

    1. Because I see from viewpoint of acting. You see from viewpoint of personal live which right now I am not too concerned with.

      1. And come on, even the bimbos slept with him because of his fame/wealth/looks. It is a 2 way street. Mavis was not some innocent naive halo bearing little virginal saint.

      2. See… the thing is no one called Raymond Lam a “womanizer”, “horny asshole”, “a jerk” or other bad names. You just associated him with fame/wealth and looks (to which I disagree) which are positive attributes.

That’s what TVB wants naive fans to continue to think.

      3. his fans still think he’s innoncent part here. when you fool around constantly sooner or later you will get exposed especially hooking up with a woman like Mavis. they both made a trade and got what they wanted and ray now trying to play innocent just make me sick. nothing wrong being a horny-dog so stop pretending to be hurt man!

      4. It’s because people focus on his work more. Many can see in this series that Raymond is the saving grace and make the series entertaining. His character is a spoiled brat but Raymond makes a brat funny and cute and loveable with his funny acting.

      5. @ TVB Fan

“See… the thing is no one called Raymond Lam a “womanizer”, “horny asshole”, “a jerk” or other bad names. “

Uh, yes, there are people who call him that. Even in this website itself, there were several people bashing him.

There are people who call Charm a gold-digger and there are people who defended her. There are people who call Ray a jerk and there are people who supported him. But, somehow you only see the attack on Charm and the support for Ray. Strange.

      6. @ Vivien

” His character is a spoiled brat but Raymond makes a brat funny and cute and loveable with his funny acting.

His character is written to be a lovable spoiled brat, not, a truly hateful one. Remember how Kit felt bad about playing prank on a mentally-handicapped girl? This shows that he despite being spoiled, he actually has a kind heart. He’s a harmless spoiled brat. I doubt the script was written by Ray. So, the script + Ray makes the character work. It’s not the case of Ray making a hateful character lovable.

      7. @ Kidd: Ppl only see the thing they want to see

      8. @Fox,
and what’s the problem with that? think how boring it would be if everyone had the same thought!

      9. “There are people who call Charm a gold-digger and there are people who defended her. There are people who call Ray a jerk and there are people who supported him. But, somehow you only see the attack on Charm and the support for Ray. Strange.”

ROFL. I agree with Kidd. TVB fan only sees the attack on Charmaine as if Charmaine is wronged and unfairly attacked. Omg get real.

      10. “And come on, even the bimbos slept with him because of his fame/wealth/looks. It is a 2 way street. Mavis was not some innocent naive halo bearing little virginal saint.”

        You are too funny! 😀

    2. @TVB fan

Charmaine is criticized because her performance is horrible. People have right to criticize her.

Who cares if she has high EQ or smart in dealing with her rumours? The point here is her ACTING in MSOEF is exaggerating, unnatural and unconvincing.

I agree with Funn. Mavis is clearly using Raymond as her stairway to popularity. She’s not some simple innocent lady. It’s not affecting Raymond work at all because he’s a good superstar. Raymond saves MSOEF from being a total unbelievable freak series with his funny character.

      1. @Vivien, It’s people like you that make wealthy people look down at poor people. Piety. piety.

But that’s okay. We always need slaves who will bow down to their masters.

      2. @TVB fan

Do you have a grudge on wealthy people? I have many friends who are wealthy and not all wealthy people are bad and look down on others. Rofl I don’t see the connection at all about so called bowing to masters and look down at people.

      3. @Vivien, I think you’ll make a better Ah Fa. Forget what I said…. continue your innocence and love affair.

      4. @ Vivien: Maybe because TVB fan is poor, so seeing others’ money make her/him sad.

Wealthy ppl look down at poor ppl or not, it’s one matter. Another matter, poor ppl plz stop being jealous with wealthy ppl. If you have talents, show it and do your work to become rich as them. It’s a better way to waste time.

      5. common people don’t be mean to each other. Everybody has their own thoughts about stuff so this is fair. well i suppose there is some truth that rich people are looking down on poor people. just like normal people tend to look down at retarded adult woth 5 year old mentality.

      6. You look down on the limited metal capacity, or in large, handicap ppl, don’t mean the whole world is doing such thing.

      7. well im trying not to, but lets be honest when we see people doing strange things we will all think “what the heck is she doing” until we figure out oh she is retarded but how come she’s not having a bowl haircut LOL. Maybe i don’t look down at them still they will make me feel a little uncomfortable.

      8. that most people do hold some prejudice against retarded people whether they want it or not. Can you tell 100% that you don’t?

      9. “If you have talents, show it and do your work to become rich as them. It’s a better way to waste time.”

HAHAHA, fox! You are so funny, but this is so true too. 😀

    3. I wonder if you watch 1) A Taste of Love or not to comment that this role is prince. ROLF, next time if you wanna comment, plz at least watch the series.

What he did to PSS? And have sex with a girl = won’t get married? Lol, maybe you should watch some US movies (LMAO~). And wat he did in his private life have any relationship with his acting?

Lol lol, many of you have trouble with his “love” (assume that). Ok come on, since you are bothering too much on private life of artists, plz stop acting like “oh I only hate because it’s fake, oh I only hate because it’s horny”. I’m so sick of ppl who always think sex = crime. If there is no sex, you guys are not existed, ok?

Please, artists are human, give them a private life.

      1. and TVB fan is talking as if she knows Raymond in real life. Rofl.

    4. The negative comments to Charmaine is fair. I really think that she overdid her voice and childish expressions. She’s more like a 4 or 5 year old instead of 10. Charmaine fans should learn to accept criticisms.

Her eye expressions are also wrong. She’s too focused and it doesn’t look like a genuine eyes for mentally challenged person.

Charmaine should have rewatched Golden Faith to see how to act as a mentally challenged person convincingly. Until now Myolie is the best TVB actress in this role to me. I think she’s even better than Ah Wong and she doesn’t even need the bowl haircut.

      1. I wonder is it a popular no fuss haircut? If she puts bows on her hair then we might all think she is not mentally challenged but mentally insane.

  14. what is wrong with chok, ray is born with the chok look, you cant blame him.

  15. ray can fulfill any role, he versatile, a very obedient artist in tvb, what they give him to do, he will just do even not so good roles.

  16. of course ray support char, he like her brothers, and plus char performance is outstanding in fa.

      1. Charm and Ray are good friends. Ray is like a brother to Charm and vice versa.

      2. Of course. After knowing his taste, I don’t think Charmaine fits that. Not even Ron’s!

  17. sorry funn, i dont think ray liking to her, ray treat char like big sister.

    1. It is kinda like an insult leh! But then Char treats ray like baby brother?

Very familial sort of love around TVB.

  18. Hell, Catherine Chau Jia Yi’s (周家怡) role did better then Charmaine by a mile.
    🙂

  19. @Vivien, I apologize for being too harsh on my comment earlier. I was a little mean. This is a forum to express our opinions. There’s no need to incinerate each other like Exoidus mentioned.

But I agree that we are NOT on the same page. I determine whether an actor is a good idol or not based on his/her private life. Not based on his/her acting. Just like how many politicians and public figures are ousted from their post because of extramarital affair. Their character determines how well they do their job.

I just can’t stand that LF still have so many supporters (yes @Fox and @Kidd I agree I shouldn’t have used “no one”, there is a MINORITY of individuals who called him names)after what he had done. If his father isn’t one of the wealthy developers in Ximen, I wonder if he will still have so many followers and be so popular.

I mean I think Ron Ng has a very clean record and his acting is in par with Raymond Lam’s but he is not heavily promoted, i.e. his screen time is less than LF. You have to agree that there’s a bias. LF has been heavily promoted from the beginning just because of his background.

For your record, I don’t have a thing against the rich. I’m just upset at the unfairness of this world. The rich will get richer (i.e. LF is the highest earner in TVB in terms of actors) and the poor will get poorer (the no name third or forth line actors struggling to pay rent etc).

For your record, I’m not poor and it wasn’t out of jealousy that I dislike LF. I do a lot of volunteering work and had witness mentally disabled individuals, sad, poor and homeless while I read news about 3rd generation brats partying, binge drinking, driving while intoxicated and getting high on drugs.

Also for your record @Fox, I did watch “A Taste of Love.” Raymond owns the restaurant so he’s also being called “Xiao Yeh”.

I guess all three of you (Vivienne, Fox, and Kidd) are young and don’t know what the society is like. Keep your innocence it’s better that way.

    1. @ TVB Fan

      1) Ron Ng does not have a clean image. He also has many rumours including dating someone’s big-chested girlfriend. (No proofs, but still not a clean image)
      2) Ron was promoted heavily after TITS. He join the music industry earlier than Ray and released an album earlier than Ray despite Ray having more singing experience than him. But, he was not ready for these quick promotion and he failed. But, TVB never give up on up. They are building him up slowly again.
      3) Ray is not one of those 2nd and 3rd generation rich kid to just party, binge and drunk drive while using family money. Ray work hard from the bottoms up. He worked until hospitalised out of exhaustion. TVB promoted Raymond and invest in Raymond because he succeeded and can bring in the money. So, Raymond go to party, dated some sexy girl, have premarital sex, like many men do. That made him bad?
      5) Do you know that someone has suggest Ray join the music industry way earlier than he did? But, at that time, he want to focus on one thing at a time. So, he focus on developing his acting first which shows he’s serious about his work.
      4) Raymond can act better than Ron. Has been and still is.
      5) Yes, even if Ray does not come from the riches family in Ximen, he will still be as popular and with as many followers. What does his family richness has to do with his fans? His fans did not benefit in any way or form from his riches.
      6) Raymond has a bad relationship that doesn’t work out and he might be at fault. So, because of this, the majority of people have to condemn him and call him names?
      7) Some do have biases. But, the majority of people who criticised Charmaine’s performance in Sister Fa really did so because they felt she did a bad job. Which should be the right way. Viewers should not have to praise her even if she did not do a good job just because she live an exemplary life offscreen.

Just because I don’t mix personal life with a person’s acting ability does not mean I’m innocent.

Just because I don’t hate Raymond for his private sexual escapes does not meant I don’t know what society is like.

And personally, I think you see too much unfairness until you have prejudice against rich 2nd generation kids. Why do you believe everything Mavis Pan said?

So, just because there’s homeless, sad, poor, disabled individuals out there, Ray cannot go enjoy himself a bit? If that’s the case, you might as well condemn all the people who used their hard earned money to enjoy themselves.

Lastly, you also seem to have some issue with gender inequality or perceived gender inequality, with you suddenly bringing up the glass ceiling talk when it does not apply to Charmaine’s case. (I thought glass ceiling refer to the situation where a certain group does not get equal opportunities?)

    2. Just for the record. I’m not Raymond’s fan. So, don’t think I defended him because I’m an innocent blind fan who think he’s an saint.

      1. I don’t know why ppl often mistaken that you are a fan?

    3. Sorry if I sound harsh. Just expressing my opinion. I don’t like 2nd generations brats who did nothing but just spend family money irresponsibly and caused a lot of trouble for society. But, I don’t see Raymond as one of them.

    4. “I guess all three of you (Vivienne, Fox, and Kidd) are young and don’t know what the society is like. Keep your innocence it’s better that way.”

I can vouch for a fact that Kidd is not some young giddy starry eyed girl. Quite an old soul. Not old, BUT old soul.

” I determine whether an actor is a good idol or not based on his/her private life. Not based on his/her acting. Just like how many politicians and public figures are ousted from their post because of extramarital affair. Their character determines how well they do their job.”

But you base that on being idols. So being idols they have to set an example, correct? But I believe since we are talking about acting, should the acting be the main measure of how good he is as an actor professionally? And frankly what did he do that was so morally repugnant or wrong? He didn’t cheat her, he didn’t lie outright, he didn’t do any crime nor engage in some Edison like behaviour. Again it is a 2 way street. There are some yes I agree must be held accountable for their behaviour but for me the only fault with Ray is that he didn’t hire better PR to handle the so called scandal which again isn’t that much of a scandal anyway.

“I mean I think Ron Ng has a very clean record and his acting is in par with Raymond Lam’s but he is not heavily promoted, i.e. his screen time is less than LF. You have to agree that there’s a bias. LF has been heavily promoted from the beginning just because of his background.”

Probably. Ray was heavily promoted from very very earlier on, and yes probably his background helped, with connections within TVB. But after a while he is on his own. Between Ron and Ray, Ray has a huge fanbase. Ron is slowly climbing up but he was also heavily promoted at one point, remember? Both followed different path, Ray more into his singing, Ron now slowly going back to acting. Both suffered from overexposure at some point so walking away is good, at least for Ron since now that he is back fans are more appreciative. And on acting ability, I am with most here; Ray is a far better actor and a dependable one. Ron is to be still a one note actor. But since I saw him less, I don’t mind him much.

“For your record, I don’t have a thing against the rich. I’m just upset at the unfairness of this world. The rich will get richer (i.e. LF is the highest earner in TVB in terms of actors) and the poor will get poorer (the no name third or forth line actors struggling to pay rent etc).”

Hey I am with you on that! BUT there is a reason why LF is a high earner in terms of actors in TVB. He is popular, make that mega popular. ONE song and he can hold an entire concert, that sort of popular. One man, alone. I won’t deny his popularity and as we all know, actors’ fee depends 100% on popularity. If he is earning that much, that is because he is worth that asking price, much like Tom Cruise and his USD25 million fee or whatever. Is he actually worth that much? I don’t know, unless I check into ad revenues, ratings, etc. But generally, Ray is mega popular in and out of HK.

“For your record, I’m not poor and it wasn’t out of jealousy that I dislike LF. I”

You don’t have to justify your critique and I hate that just because we criticise we are jealous, etc. Jealous of what? We are not even in the same industry, not even the same person or in same circumstances. As long as it is valid and reasonable, all opinion is good opinion.

However I think Ray may object to being called an idol. I think he may wish to move on from there. But look, we all know public image and private image is both different. Some star looks like some down to earth girl, or guy, keeps saying I am humble, etc, but in truth to remain at the top you keep the outward appearance of humbleness to gain good public opinion but with so much fighting and clawing everywhere, privately they may be total bastards just to stay on top. So I don’t think any of us are under any illusion that stars are humans too; they don’t smile benignly and wish for world peace. In their minds they may wish us bloggers a thousand painful deaths.

      1. Thanks @Kidd and @Funn Lim for the long responses. We all have our own views and I accept when it comes to celebrities I’m not a guru. I admit for being wrong at times for not being clear with my comments. I’m open-minded. Willing to change values when I see fit.

Just for clarification, I wasn’t targeting LF specifically. I was just talking about what I read and what I’d seen. The lifelong struggle between the rich and the poor (and may I add luck to the equation).

I agree LF’s not one of those good-for-nothing brats and that he’s very passionate about his career. Otherwise, he won’t cry for the damage the scandal had caused him.
Thanks for the feedback. Constructive critiques are appreciated.

    5. To reply you, as you mention of my name a lot of time.

      1. Why you can’t stand that he has fans? It’s sure to be jealous, lol. Jealous that he has fans while you/your fave idol dun have.

      2. I dunno how old you are and yes, I’m still young (haha, I’m considering that <50 = young) but I blv that I know a bit about the society world. Lol.

      3. Good job if you really do the volunteering work. However, wat's up with that? LF is brats partying, binge drinking, driving while intoxicated and getting high on drugs? Oh why I dunno such thing?

      4. His father is one of the wealthy developers in Xiamen, so? His father bought him fans? How many his father can buy? I consider myself as a fan, but I have to pay money to see him (buy series, for example). Of course I want to be paid to be a fan, but too bad, no :(. Do you know where his father pays to his fans, tell me.

      5. What he've done? Sleep with a sexy adult girl? LOL! If it's a crime, then the whole world are crime. Just a minority of the world dun have sex demand, my dear. With your knowledge on "what the society is like", you don't know such thing? Other than sleeping with sexy adult girl, what he've done? Kill someone?

      6. Hehe, I like innocence. It's so great to be called as an innocent person. Thanks for your praise. Yes I'm so innocent.

      7. The lower part of your post is contradict with all above. So your point is?

      1. My point is I don’t want to continue with the berate. I learn to shut up and not dis LF if I don’t want to waste time arguing something pointless.

I guess free speech has its limits. =(

      2. @ TVB fan

Don’t be upset. Of course you have free speech. Fox just want to have her say since you address her in your comment. 🙂

I do respect you for the mature way you handle criticism. I might not be able to do it as well.

      3. I don’t ban your free speech right. Actually I can’t do such thing. Lol, if you wanna say, who can force you to shut up, unless you have nothing to say.

      4. P/S: You still dun provide me where his father pays the fans :(.

      5. @ Fox

P/S: You still dun provide me where his father pays the fans

        得些好意需回首.

TVB_fan already agree that LF is not one of those good-for-nothing brats and that he’s very passionate about his career.

No need to push it further lah.

      6. @ Kidd: These are 2 different things in her/his post.

However, I know he/she won’t reply me, so I’ll hold my horse back :).

  20. Watching episode 3 now. I find Charmaine quite funny in this episode. Not that bad after all. Maybe I got used to her already or she got more into her role liao. Raymond is sometimes natural, sometimes not. Maybe I’ll see fluctuation like this throughout the series for both of the actors because the scenes were not filmed in chronological order. But, I hope to see that as the actors get more and more into their role, I will see less fluctuation.

    1. That’s why I hate tvb, they don’t film chronologically, so the chemistry and performance are not developed naturally. Hate this filming method.

  21. I agree that Charmaine’s performance is lacking in this series, probably because her character resembles too much of “Ah Wong.” It seems exaggerated as well. I liked Myolie’s performance in Golden Faith as well. My favorite by far is Damien Lau’s performance in Greed of Man. I know his character was not mentally retarded or anything, but after he was crippled by Adam Cheng’s character, he had both cognitive and physical impairments and I remember his performance really touched me at that time. It really made me feel sorry for his character and there were some scenes that made me teary-eyed.
I’ve only finished episode 1 so far, but I’ll see if Charmaine’s performance and portrayal gets any better later in the series. If not, it will be unbearable to finish it.

  22. of course ray would support the lady, char is the sister fa, without the sister fa, the series will not be called sister fa, and i think both of them char and ray has done great job, it is good combination, but poor on sister fa get herself into trouble a lots, but dont give up.

  23. I don’t know why comparing her to ah wang, frankly don’t think Roger Kwok did a very convincing job either.

  24. did ah wong character marry jessica’s character in the ancient and/ modern version?

    1. In the modern version, No.

Initially the script wanted Ah Wong and Jess to get together but Jessica changed it because she thinks the original script is illogical; I’m grateful that she’s brave enough to confront the scriptwriter.

Ah Wong’s product become successful, Catherine found a new boyfriend, and the only marriage is between Michael and Angel.

      1. @Masaharu, My memories of the series is vague. I thought they did end up together. I recall Jessica’s character had pursuers, but she didn’t accept any of them. I don’t exactly remember, but it was probably an ambiguous ending where Jessica didn’t have a boyfriend, but she didn’t exactly end up with Roger. I recall that she probably missed Roger, but didn’t have romantic feelings for him.

      2. I myself wasn’t sure whether she hooked up or just being pursued, but she definitely received a bouquet of flower at the end from some other guy. Yeah, what’s firm is that she did miss and care for Ah Wong, but the romantic feeling was never there. That’s why she “left” him.

      3. Yeah, I also remember the way Chriselle remember it. The ending was left ambiguous. She didn’t have new boyfriend. The ending was her holding hands with Ah Wong. But, whether it’s friendship or love, it’s up to the viewers to decide. Personally, I want it to be friendship only. Intellectually, there’s too big a gap. Catherine can’t talk to him about anything deep or complex.

      4. Ok yeah my bad, I forgot the “very ending” scene at the end. Catherine did come back but I think they just left it there. How could I forgot? Haha..it was just 5 years ago

I guess I forgot that scene because I didn’t want Jessica to end up with Ah Wong. I prefer to think of them as having a non-romantic relationship.

      5. I also have this vague memory where there’s a scene of Ah Wong crying and “let go” of Jessica and that was why she “left” and them being separated for a few years. Perhaps this is why I tend to take the ending as more open for thoughts(and forgot it..haha).

    2. Roger is quite annoying actually as Ah Wong. I don’t like him much especially the modern Ah Wong

      1. I agree with this. Despite Roger being a great actor, Ah Wong never really grew on me and I never really understood why people loved his performance so much. I found him annoying.

      2. Annoying yes but was he convincing? YES! So it was a fantastic performance. He wasn’t self conscious. He wasn’t deliberate. He was natural, and as annoying as anyone of that sort of mental age I suppose.

      3. Convincing? He was exaggerating too. The same way that Charmaine exaggerated that’s why people accuse Charmaine of copying Roger’s acting

      4. @ Vivien

No, people did not accuse Charmaine for copying Roger because she was exaggerated as Roger. She was accused of copying Roger because her mannerism was similar to Roger. But, Roger was more natural, while hers seem deliberate. I was annoyed with Roger’s Ah Wong too when I watch the series, but, I don’t find his acting deliberate or self-conscious.

  25. When I was younger I remember watching a series about Bowie Lam taking care of a “mentally-challenged” younger brother. I guess it’s called “The Green Hope”. Me too lazy to google haha. However I wasn’t sure if it was autism instead since I watched it more than 10 years ago..I guess.

      1. The guy in Green Hope doesn’t have schizophrenia. He’s autistic. Schizophrenia is where you hear voices and have hallucination among other things.

  26. Leon Lai has this kind of role in a movie that I dun rmb name, and he also talks slowly.

    1. I don’t really like Leon Lai’s acting. He’s the second worst of the kings.

      1. Sorry but Aaron Kwok happens to be a rather good actor. Leon Lai… cannot lar.

      2. LOL Aaron Kwok in the “muderer” and many other movies is truly excellent. He is the best actor among the heavenly kings!

      3. To me, the best actor among the 4 Heavenly Kings is Jacky Cheung.

    2. I don’t remember him talking slow, but, he does act like a kid.

  27. fox, defeat all the heaters, your are the best, i support, no one only you.

  28. Fox,

It’s soo tiring to be you. Defending Ray all the time but you can’t change people opinion no matter what you say. I salute you for always standing up for Ray. You are a real fan. Btw, I don’t hate him but I don’t like you either. However, I think he is handsome in Sister Fa. I have stopped watching Sister Fa because Fa lai Chu is too annoying to watch.

  29. Fox,
Sorry, I mean “I don’t like him either” not “you.”

  30. they always left ray with like the smart genius and polite roles, i really like hugo zhang though, he so hilarious, support ray, he super hero, he has a soft heart for the handicapped sis fa, for all his impishness, in the end he fall for her.

  31. First week ratings: episode 1-5 for a whopping 27 points . . . peaking at 30 points and it is going to drop.

Ive seen the episode 6; too much crying, arguing, screaming on top of their lungs.

Charmaine’s role still is BAD, IMO.

I think their probably some complainants on certain scenes just to drag in to more negative reviews.

I’ll be shock if its a rating disaster.

    1. “Ive seen the episode 6; too much crying, arguing, screaming on top of their lungs.”

Isn’t that what HK viewers love? Look at the ratings of HOG and MR. Lol.

“First week ratings: episode 1-5 for a whopping 27 points . . . peaking at 30 points and it is going to drop.”

I don’t see it dropping. You are still watching it despite your complaints. 🙂
I’m up to episode 4 and so far, I find the series getting better and more entertaining. I’ve read the episode summaries up to episode 9 and I’m interested to see these episodes.

      1. I can guarantee without Mavis Pan geetimg more attention…I see this series not able to reach 30 points unless towards the end if there is something.

Its really unwatchable in this episode.

However, episode 7… love to see Raymond Lam roaring in a Tiger costume….

      2. @ Larry3, from the beginning of 2011 to now, if I rmb rite, only the Sushi series have 30.5 as average rating. And its first week is also under 30. The rest is 25,26,27,28,29. I wonder if there is any series will break 30.5 record of Sushi series in the first half of 2011 or not.

      3. No Fox, you go it wrong.
“The Rippling Blossom” currently has the highest TVB ratings:
        Week 1: 29, peak @ 31,

        Week 2: 30, peak @ 33,

        Week 3: 31, peak @ 34,

        Week 4: 34, peak @ 38.

        and It is watchable.

      4. “The Rippling Blossom” is 31 points average… follow by Only You and Grace Under Fire at 29, 7 Days In Life at 28 peak at 36.

      5. Nope, TRB dun have 34 in the last week. Only 2 last eps has 34.

        Episodes 01-05: 29 points (peaking @ 31 points)

        Episodes 06-09: 30 points (peaked @ 32 points)

        Episodes 11-14: averaged 31 points

        Episodes 15-18: 32 points

        Episodes 19-20: 34 points (peaking @ 38 points)

        So it’s 30.5 average. I rmb rite.

I watched a part of it (part of Chilam and Myolie) because I don’t have the mood to watch TY on screen (that’s why I dun watch any of her parts). If this series dun have TY, I’ll watch it in full. Since it has, sorry I have to watch a part of it only as I like Chilam and Myolie (so I watched few of their highlight parts). They are quite cute couple.

Yes, TRB is the highest rating up to now in 2011. I said so, rite? The rest dun break 30 average.

  32. well, i accepted that opinion, because i do think it true, maybe because ray suit to carry a role like a rich, genius and polite, like what he actually use to be outside, but did ray have ever received role that related to gengster or cops.

    1. Have, in his kefele roles he was prison guard and cop.

  33. tvb likes ray clean and top of all, he never really gets placed in bad roles, fa is kind of like tvb breakthrough for ray.

  34. Oh course he ‘supports’ her, I mean what is he to tell the press: “No, I think she sucks big time in this role but I can’t say that because we are never allowed to say anything bad about anyone involved with Big Brother (TVB) or I will get it from the execs.” DUH!

    1. he must be thinking:”didn’t know how bad her acting skill really is, well the good thing is that all attention is on her now so no one will focus on my scandal haha”

      1. Haha, that’s funny but yea..

I mean it obvious that Mavis is just using this scandal to increase her fame (or infamy depending on how one looks at it) but still, Raymond should have know better than to get involved with someone like her. After all, it takes two to tango..

      2. Nahhhhhh… Just auto mode. Like CY says, I don’t expect any fellow actor to come out and tell the truth. Gotta be polite.

  35. sister fa already encounter as comedy and it really funny, and ray look cute in his role because he is naughty.

  36. I check the character profiles for this series. It is interesting that in real life Charmaine is older than Raymond. But, in all 3 series they have played lovers, Charmaine’s character is younger than Raymond’s.

  37. This series is comedy. So her acting is passable. It’s a series and not movie. It’s probably quite tiring for her to act like this through out 20 series. If it is a movie probably it is easier for actress to focus, since the filming time probably will be shorter than series. I’m not charmaine fan nor hater, just a thought after i watch several ep. Her expression do look like ah wang tho.

    1. and yet “some” people denied it!

I can see this series turn to be a rating disaster. Is TVB desperately to get more audience to watch this crap series?

      1. I guess they were trying to get creative and look at how it has turned out??

      2. Let’s wait until the end to see it’s a rating disaster or not.

      3. @ Fox

Larry3 keeps saying that the ratings is going to be disaster and so far, it has not turn disaster yet.

      4. Its a rating disaster. You can see it. Her acting still is bad. She is still Ah Wong JR 2.0,

This series has lots of flaws and noticeable if my add.

If Raymond Lam makes out with Ah Wong 2.0, in episode 11 to 15, next week… ratings may improve.

      5. If I am wrong, then I am wrong.

I believe this second week of ratings may show it wont get above 30 points without mentioning peak points. Probably high 20s.

The story and one of the actress is pulling down the series. Lots of bad feedback on this series which I agree with.

      6. “This series has lots of flaws and noticeable if my add.”

Just curious. What are some of those flaws that you notice?

      7. @ Larry3: YSSS’s first week is 27, second is 28 then 3 next weeks 29. Is it a rating disaster?

Before Fa, Relic only has 28 in the last week. Before that the rating is 25,26,27. Is it also a rating disaster?

Mind you that TVB series in 2011, the highest is 30.5 average (31 as you state but it’s actually 30.5). So Fa isn’t the worst rating so far. Before claim it as rating disaster, it must be one.

I blv that you only (wanna) see the bad feedback of this one. It’s actually not bad and Charmaine’s performance in this one isn’t resemble to Roger’s Ah Wong. I dun say it’s good or bad but it isn’t similar to Roger’s. But I also doubt that you watched any eps of Fa.

      8. There is indeed some positive correlation between how good a series is and the ratings, however this might not always be true. In the first place we need to make a criteria of a good series and people view good series different.

In the end i suspect HK people either have too much time or just watch crappy tv series so they can talk about how bad i was later on. So ratings don’t mean that a series is good or bad.

      9. You want flaws?!

Episode 6 – Raymond’s Hugo & Pierre’s Mike around 09:30 run time on HDZone video, look at their clothes….The clothes dont match. They do not match from scene to scene in a day and it is noticeable if you watch it so closely!

Episode 8: Hugo’s attempted suicide. He landed safely but he’s pulling his shirt down without exposing his abs or his ass? Huh?

One more . . . On a scene where Hugo and Charmine’s FaFa argument where he doesnt need help…He hit his RIGHT foot on the stairway. But the next scene when Hugo is in FaFa’s home, FaFa helps Hugo to treat his LEFT leg injury. Which one he’s injured LEFT or RIGHT???

The punching scene with Hugo and Jazz’s Danny… Danny punch Hugo and that angle as you can see it is too far to punch him. Can Jazz’s arm reach that far to punch him? They could have use a better shot another angle showing he punch without exposing the “safe distance” punch.

Episode 9: Hugo and FaFa’s clothes does not match from scene to scene.

Kidd: Just curious. What are some of those flaws that you notice?

      10. Fox, its a 31 point rating average… just round it for all I care. A lot of TVB forums websites or webpages depicting that anyways.

“Relic of an Emissary” is a rating disaster, So? No one watch that series and I can see why. I believe TVB loose a lot of money on that series.

Hey if I am wrong calling it “My Sister of Eternal Flower” a rating disaster, IMO… then I manned up. It is not the end of the world for me or you… geez.

Please, there are lots of bad feedback circling around the interwebs… does it shock you that people are ripping of the series because the series is bad?

I can see why fanboys dont like critics and it is a good thing 🙂

Its funny that you think I dont watch this series . . . Haha!

      11. When is a series considered rating disaster? I see celebrations for 31 points, 41points, 21 points.. always celebration?

      12. LMAO, so you follow it very tight, Larry 3. If it’s really bad, why you have to make yourself feel bad? Or you really wanna love SM (kidding*).

Not the end of the world, I just tell you to be patient and wait.

And it dun shock me for a second. Hehe, TRB also has an amount of bad reviews. So what? Name me a series that there is no complaint about it?

      13. @ Larry 3

Episode 8: Hugo’s attempted suicide. He landed safely but he’s pulling his shirt down without exposing his abs or his ass? Huh?

I’m watching this part now. I play it again and again and still didn’t get what you mean. What do you mean by pulling his shirt without exposing his ass or abs? Why would he expose his ass when he’s wearing jean. If he’s pulling is shirt down, how could his abs (abdomen?) be exposed?

The only flaw I see is he shouldn’t be bothered pulling his shirt down since he’s supposed to be very upset. So, should be bothered about such small thing.

  38. i love the theme song, and of course this drama too, and ray light up my life, please never stop singing and acting.

  39. fox, when the drama series of men with no shadow will be air, thank you.

  40. To be honest. Sister Fah is actually not bad at all. It’s actually quite a funny and enjoyable series. It’s better than I initially expected. I expect it to be really crappy based on the premise.

TVB can’t always air ‘No Regrets. One needs variety.

  41. In ‘Life Made Simple’, I don’t like watching Ah Wong’s parts. I prefer plots involving the supporting characters and I rooted for Bosco to end up with Jessica.

But, in Sister Fah, I enjoy watching Charmaine’s and Raymond’s part. Charmaine is still unconvincing as a mentally challenged person, but, I don’t find her annoying now. I find Catherine Chau’s portrayal more natural.

  42. Charmaine’s Sister Fah can be quite cute. Ray is getter better in his role. I enjoy watch his Hugo making a fool of himself. I think Hugo’s chok look earlier is actually a kind of self-depreciating humor. Louis Koo is very good at this.
