Sammul Chan: “I Only Like Some People At TVB!”
With new Hong Kong television station, City Telecom (CTI) ready to film their first dramas soon, the company has been eagerly recruiting many former TVB actors. Sammul Chan (陳鍵鋒) was one of the artists that CTI owner, Ricky Wong (王維基), has been in recent discussions with. Sammul appeared to keep his options open, remaining non-committal in his response as to which side he will be taking in TVB and CTI’s upcoming “television wars.”
Last year, Sammul spent the majority of his time filming in mainland China. His popularity level surged after appearing in Schemes of a Beauty <美人心计>, in which he won the 2010 Seoul International Drama Awards for the Most Popular Male Artist in the China region. Sammul enjoyed working in mainland China, remarking that the filming fees were much higher due to the larger market.
Returning to Hong Kong for a two-week break earlier, Sammul met with local fans. Many fans attended the gathering, eager to take photos with him. Due to his long absence from Hong Kong, the fans were excited and asked to take numerous photos with their idol, who willingly complied.
Although Sammul’s popularity in Hong Kong was still high, the actor appeared reserved when asked if he would consider filming for Ricky Wong’s CTI. According to Oriental Daily, Sammul said, “Everything is not finalized yet. I do not know anything!” However, Sammul admitted that he has kept in touch with Ricky Wong, who flew to Taiwan to visit Sammul’s filming set earlier.
TVB was often dubbed as being “petty” and unforgiving towards artists who leave the company. Asked whether Sammul was concerned that he would be labeled as a “traitor” by TVB if he were to film for a rival station, he replied, “No, many people change jobs in society. So such people should be dubbed as traitors?”
Although he had criticized TVB for their red-tape bureaucracy and unfair salary standards in the past, Sammul indicated that he was not disgruntled. “Actually, TVB treated me okay. However, there are some people that I do not like there!” That appears to be the sentiment towards TVB management in recent years.

Jayne: Actors who film for CTI still value the Hong Kong market, which may still temporarily be ahead in producing modern, trendy dramas, especially in portraying various professional trades. However, it shouldn’t be too hard for mainland China productions to catch up.
China has surpassed Hong Kong dramas in ancient dramas for some years. Better settings, landscape shooting, costumes, and historical details. Their scripts contain less gibberish dialogue too, which often appears anachronistic in Hong Kong ancient dramas.
Wasn’t he “betrayed” by one his friends? lol I read something like that in the past, but don’t remember the details.
And TVB’s management being crappy has been public knowledge for a while. Nothing new there.
I really liked Sammul in Relic of an Emissary! Best character in the whole show. He deserved more screen time. I also really liked him in The Price of Greed. He made a really good villain, and the drama was also very well-paced and well-written, but being the jerks that TVB are, they warehoused that one…
Yes, there was an article where he mentioned that he was betrayed by one of 6 Olympic stars including Ron, LF, Kenneth, Bosco and Lai Lok Yi. There was also another article to say that Kenneth is this person.
It was actually Bosco. The rumor was that Bosco talked bad about Sammul to the directors/producers. And, he probably doesn’t get along with Virginia. Haha
I remember after that article was released, the writer or the magazine got lambasted because no one believe Kenneth would do it. Furthermore, Sammul voted for Kenneth during one TVB award voting.
Really?? I have never heard about that… I just heard that Sammul said that he didn’t have many friends in TVB. I think he is friends with Raymond though because I rememeber that Raymond asked about him when he got injured while filming in CHina.

Are you sure it was Bosco?? Honestly, if it were Bosco, I can believe it more than Kenneth… I had a feeling that Sammul did not get along well with Bosco for some odd reason. I didn’t think that he didn’t like Ron though but am not too sure…
I think Sammul and Ron are pretty good friends. Sammul is one of the few TVB (or ex TVB) actors who followed by Ron on weibo. Interesting thing is that they both are not following Bosco.
i also think Sammul and Ron are good friends, Ron once said he and Sammul used to go to fish shop together.
From what I read, at 6 Olympic Stars moment, Sammul was good friend with Bosco. But afterwards, they became more like stanger to each other.

I think Sammul does like Raymond. I remember he defended Raymond in one of his interviews when there was rumour of him having bad attitude on set.
As for Bosco, I didn’t know that Sammul use to be good friends with Bosco. I was not yet a fan of Sammul during the S4 and Olympic 6 days. I was more a fan of Bosco instead. But, when the news broke out that one of the O6 betrayed him, I did suspect it was Bosco (from evaluating all the clues written in various articles). But, then, I saw an interview clip of Bosco during the filming of ‘Price of Greed’ and Sammul joked around behind him. There din’t seem to be animosity between them. After seeing this clip, I became not so sure.
Unless Sammul said the name himself, the identity of the betrayer will remain just a speculation. Maybe it has all been a misunderstanding, and after that outburst, Sammul has made up with that person.

I think the “betrayal” occurred after the PoG filming.
Sammul once said he isn’t good friend with Ron, before he went to China 1st time to film the Chor Lau Heung. Then he came back and suddenly, the love rumour between him and Ron appear.
For Bosco, I don’t know the relationship between Sammul and Bosco but it seems good at PoG. Bosco’s male gang includes Oscar Leung, LF, Micheal Miu and Derek. The best should be Oscar and 3 Gor.
For LF, Sammul and LF seem to be friend in The Four? But LF and Ron are closer and the reporters said Sammul was jealous (love rumour with Ron) at this time. Face made it like a triangle love story. After that, they 3 always have to stick with each other, and then Kenneth was the one who said to be left out. Then 4 together and so on, the left out was said by reporter came to Kate. Lol.
I also dun know about the relationship of Sammul and Kenneth but I always have the feeling that Kenneth has no male buddy. His buddy seems to be ladies only: Selena, TY, Nancy.
I remember about Sammul saying he’s not friends with Ron because it shocked me but later they seem to made up because later there is gay rumour of them. Also rumours that Sammul is one of Stephen chan’s toyboy. Is Sammul one of those that wong hei angry at for not sticking with stephen?
Bosco doesn’t seem to be the type that likes to spur things up… I’m pretty sure LF and Bosco are good friends because I remember when Bosco was caught naked by the press, LF was interviewed and joked around saying he has a nice body and stuff. As for Ron and Bosco, I’m not sure about them two but it’s believable that they aren’t the best of friends… I remember that in an interview, Kate was talking about the kiss scene she had with Bosco and Ron didn’t make any comments and remained quiet….
I think Bosco is close with Kevin and Power Chan. Maybe Michael Miu too. I love that Kate said she’s friends with both Myolie and Bosco so she was not worried about filming the intimate scenes because she’s tight with Myolie.
Myolie is very close to Nancy. I love their friendship 😀

The Price of Greed was filmed awhile ago so who knows if they were friends before and now not friends anymore. Yea, you are right that we don’t know who it is for sure unless he says so himself. It is the past now and I do hope that he had made up with that person. If they did not, then it shows that they weren’t that close to start with…
I’m certain it was Bosco. I can’t the interview with Sammul, but I have nothing against both actors. So, I’m not saying this bc I’m “Sammul’s fan.”
The first time I ever saw him was in the Price of Greed and his acting was very good… But stupid TVB had to warehouse that great series. Bosco and him were rivals in there… If Bosco is the one that betrayed him then they probably dislike each other in real life too… No wonder their acting in there was pretty good…
It is hard to find true friends in the circle and real life since you are always constantly competing with each other…I think it seems like you are able to find more true friends in different fields…

If I rmb rite, Price of Greed is re-aired on TVB Jade? Isn’t it? Uhm, I like this series in the beginning (the concept is very good) but in the end, I don’t like it much.

I am not sure about facebook alone, but I can tell you that I met 2 of my closest friends ever online at first. We then met in person many times and are now lifelong friends. I was even a bridesmaid at one of their weddings. None of the friends that I met in real life at first. are ever that close or have given me that feeling before…
Sammul’s image reminds me of Kenneth Ma. They are both tall, handsome and has a good boy image. TVB should have given Sammul more opportunity but it is their loss since CTI offers more money and respect to the artistes, things that TVB is lack of.

I think Kate looks quite girly recently, after got rid of the thick eyebrows.
He actually made the right move by filming in Mainland to gain more experiences and higher salary rather than waiting FOR TVb to promote him. During his time with tvb, he often regarded 2nd line artist eventhough he was offered as lead.

Sammul’s didn’t sign a management contract right? That’s why I think he didn’t make it big at TVB. He was given quite good roles, but no leads. I thought he was more of the main in The Guts of Man and Price of Greed, but Ron and Bosco were given more credits. Eh… That’s the life of a non-biological son.
Sometimes I wonder what was the reaons that Sammul didn’t get recognised as like LF or Ron in the 4 series.. Maybe script given Sammul isn’t as interesting as given to LF or maybe Sammul refused to become the biological son of tvb thus making him an enemy to 620?
I don’t think it is necessarily a bad thing to be a non biological son of TVB. Sammul is now achieving fame in CHina so he has nothing to be scared of. Plus, with all of these new companies opening in HK, Sammul does not need to worry about being unemployed or anything.
I have a feeling that he doesn’t get a long with 620 too. But then again, how many people really do??? She doesn’t seem like a nice person anyways. I wonder why TVB still keeps her??

You mean that ‘The Four’ series? I was angry at the treatment of Sammul’s scene in ‘The Four’. Do you know that one whole case helm by Sammul and Ron’s character in was cut out in order to cut the series from 25 episode to 22 episode (scheduling problem in Pearl Channel). And they cut other scenes of Sammul and Vivi Li. Sammul’s scene was sacrificed in the HK version. Sammul’s character was pretty interesting, but, he was not nominated in any category. Even his crossdressing role didn’t get any nomination.
I think it’s the biological son thing. I read that TVB did promote him at one point hoping he would sign management. But, he ended up not signing. After that he played mostly supporting.
620 current most fav KC and Myolie. Pity LF fell from the throne LOL. I think TVB keep 620 because she can make money

Sammul was servicable in Mei Ren Xin Ji. Didn’t think he was great, kingly, lusty, etc but I thought under the heavy costume he looks great in the sense he looks like he put on weight. Costume may be a trick on the eye.
In the Four LF is the most featured. Not much of Sammul so I dont get much impression from Sammul there LOL

Yeah I agree, I can’t remember much of Sammuel’s scenes in the 4. All i remember was LF on wheelchair and Kenneth standing behind most of the time! lol.. Not a fan of LF but i guess most scripts were well written for him.
In The 4, actually Kenneth and LF got more screentime than Sammul and Ron but obviously, Ron has less scenes than Sammul. Sammul’s chac has characteristic but Ron’s, no. And Ron is a biological son, so what do you think? The only thing to complain is the cut time of Sammul and Vivi Li but at the same time, Ron and Cilla Kung also be cut.
I kind of think of Sammul as the male version of Leila. Both were promoted for a period of time but much less in comparison to other actors/actresses during that time despite receiving main or second lead roles and were the “sacrifices”
Same as Sammul, Leila also chosen not to sign management contract with TVB although TVB offered her. Leila chosen this, and don’t blame TVB for promoting other actresses who signed the long management contract. Of course TVB will prefer their own loyal employees than someone who will easily come and go as he or she pleases as an independent artiste.
He usually will appear in some mini-RTHK series….not that disappointing.
Txb did want to promote him (by giving him lead quite soon) but it’s his own decision to not sign the contract with Txb, then can’t request Txb to underpromote him as he showed them that he can go out anytime.

I don’t think Kenneth is that “underrated.” He’s either the main or sharing the lead in his upcoming series. That’s not bad if you asked me.
With the success of THC, we can expect Kenneth’s popularity to rise. I think he somewhat got himself a spot as one of TVB’s first-line siu sang.

Was underrated? Why I can’t see it :P? MM got leading roles quite fast, too but they can’t leave ppl an impression until recent time, it isn’t audience or Txb’s faults. For example, MM shared the lead with Roger in Scavenger’s Paradise in 2005, but do you rmb him in it?
I think Kenneth was underrated because he didn’t have any “stand out” roles until recently. I remember he was lead with Kate in some romance series. Mysteries of Love, second lead. Lost in the chamber of love, second lead. Scavenger’s Paradise, second lead. Life and times of a sentinnel, second lead? Basically.. the one where he’s lead, it’s a low budget series. When he’s second lead or co-lead, he is outshined by the other male star.
I think if he is outshined by the co-leads, it is his fault.

If you all miss Sammul then why don’t you guys just watch China series?? Many of them are very good. I saw Schemes of a Beauty and it was pretty good overall. I enjoyed Sammul’s portrayal as Liu Heng very much. I didn’t like Ruby but her acting was ok. She was just her typical self… I hope that Sammul will be in more ancient series for China and Hk as well…

I don’t like the white powdered faces of those mainland actresses and their nearly doll like feature which I find it hard to believe that ppl from ancient can look so pretty lol.. I’m not saying they can’t be pretty, it’s just that actresses who are casting as grandmas have these pretty white powdered face and deep doublelid eyes and tall nose which made me hard to believe them r really acting lol.
Same goes to some taiwanese sitcoms, almost all actress powdered themselves either too white or have been thru multi of PS made them too Plastic to believe in real.
yes, i watched many of his Mainland series, but the feeling is not the same when watching him in Hong Kong series with his beautiful Cantonese, haha. Schemes of a Beauty is quite good.
I did try Beauty Scheme, but, it was not able to sustain my interest even with Sammul in it. Maybe this kind of palace scheming series just isn’t my cup of tea.
Ahh I watched bits and pieces of Schemes of a Beauty. It’s way too long for my liking so I gave up. Watched some of the start, some of him and Ruby and Feng Shao Feng and Myolie substory (which I liked the best – refreshing and not so calculative). I actually like HK ancient for palace scheming more than Mainland. But for wuxia I’ve grown to like Mainland a lot more because they’re of better quality (and TVB don’t really even make wuxia … all the siu sangs are probably too precious these days to film wuxia lol)
I blv last time I’ve watch a jianghu series on TVB was Face to fate and this one isn’t really brilliant. Other ancient series in TVB recently are not wuxia.

Well many of the HK actresses put on lots and lots of make up too so it is not just mainland CHina actresses. Not all of them are that great looking too. It really varies and I have seen a variety both young and old.
I have seen many Taiwanese dramas and not all of them look that great or powdered up themselves to be that white either. Some are a bit on the tan side as well. I can tell that a number of them did not get PS because they don’t even look that great…
I pretty much only watched the scenes with Yang Mi and Mickey He. Easily the two most interesting characters in the show (and they’re my favorite pair as well. Very tragic 🙁 ). I’m not very fond of Yang Mi as an actress, but her character in Schemes was more interesting than Ruby Lin’s.
Sammuel is pretty but he lacks the “presence” that the other stars possess. Also not macho enough. Too bad.
Agreed. Sammul prettier than Kate and Myolie but something about his presence and acting dont spell charisma and I’m getting tired of his complaining and ranting about his bad experience in TVB. Even Steven Ma dont complain in every interview. Once or twice is ntertaining to hear and bash people but all the time is tiring.

Agreed, he lacks star quality and his acting is nothing to write home about either. He’s pretty meh to me although I think ancient series suit him well, so probably Mainland China is better for his career.
I don’t think TVB is that petty like people say. They have always welcomed back artists that have had issues with them and even blacklisted ones. They have their good and their bad just like everybody else.

Weibo should have chart for HK artists. Last night I searched through the artists and I think Charlene from Twins has the most followers out of all the HK artist. She seems very popular among the China audience judging by her followers, comments, and forwards on her weibo. Anyone think that if Raymond opened a Weibo he will be the most followed HK actor? I heard his popularity in China is crazily high!

Not really “complaining.” But, Sammul was one of those “few” who spoke out about TVB. C’mon, he made the news for weeks after he left TVB because he revealed what happened behind closed doors.
Wallace Chung is actually the most famous HK (television) actor in China. But everyone tends to forget that he’s from HK (and TVB too) because he wasn’t popular until he jumped to Taiwan’s ship.

TBH, Sammul’s success in Mainland was a little bit of luck. A lot of times the artists don’t know that their series will make it big (Kevin in BBJX). There are many Mainland series every year. How many of them are actually a hit? So, Sammul got lucky with the success of Scheme of Beauty. And no, I don’t think it was expected because of Ruby. No offense, but most of her series are rather boring.
Anyway, the timing was perfect. He was probably waiting to leave TVB and it worked in his favor when “Scheme” became a major hit.
There was news that YuZhing tended to choose Sammul for Gong series (which stars Yang Mi & FSF). But he refused because of TVB’s Hongwu 32. If he chose Gong, maybe his fame could be even better.
No wonder he was so pissed off when his picture turned out to be so small in the poster and his role was relegated to supporting role (when he was promised the lead role). He missed a great opportunity.
Yes, i remember Sammul once said that If he had a chance to choose again, he will choose the “Mainland series”. As a Sammul’s fan, I feel bad as well. He likes the character in Hongwu32, but the result and what he lost is not worthy.

Well, if I was Sammul and I read the two’s scripts, I’d choose Hongwu 32 in a heartbeat. Gong was dreadful. Of course, Hongwu 32 has its flaws as well, namely Elanne Kwong (useless) and Michael Tse (boring).
Yes, that’s what i thought too. But at that time he could not know how TVB treated him later. His character was relegated like Kidd said. I don’t like Gong or 8th Prince too. If he chose Gong, maybe things would be different now.

I would have loved to see Sammul as the 8th prince too. BUt the series Gong was not that great anyways so I don’t think Sammul was missing out on much. I am sure he will have plenty of other opportunities to film great series..
Definitely. I think in a recent interview, Roger said that he filmed for several mainland dramas in the late 90’s, and then went back to TVB to film “At the Threshold of an Era” and ironically, it was “Threshold” that got him famous in the mainland. It’s definitely luck.
I begin to doubt Ruby’s taste in dramas after knowing that she was the producer behind the unforgivable Qing Shi Huang Fei.

Well, who in the circle and in the other fields doesn’t make it due to some sort of luck??? If you are talking about the circle, who doesn’t have a trademark series, song, movie that helps make them famous or big???Since you mentioned Ruby, if she was not in Huan Zhu Ge Ge, I really wonder where she would be now?? Her acting isn’t even that great and she isn’t even that pretty either… She is also successful due to luck just like many artists and people are today.
How many are truly talented and are successful without luck?? Not many…. You may be right that Sammul did get sort of lucky, but he also worked hard as well. I heard that he became so sick from working and filming that he had to turn down a number of offers… But then again, many people in the circle and world do for their job, career,etc…
Another proof that TVB don’t value acting talents and instead invest their resources in people who excels in shoe polishing or have strong backings…

Who gets liked by everyone??? Even the most famous actors and actresses that are really talented don’t get liked by everyone which is why acting is subjective. Some act better in some series than others…

Does anyone like everyone?
Currently watching Wish and Switch or whatever the English title is. Myolie’s acting sucks, much worse than the other girl (Selina?). I love TVB for what is called bio-son and bio-daughter or top fe dans(?) and siu sang(?), most of they sucks.
Overall, I like to see some TVB actresses act i CATIII because there are only a few I like in TVB.
This is why I tend to watch TVB dramas that not do not star their biological children, lol.

Correct. I do not have much stuff to watch, so I tend to watch the older ones (90s mainly. very hard to find the 80s TVB stuff nowadays) that I haven’t seen. In 2011, the only dramas that I actually watched the whole way through were A Great Way to Care, The Other Truth, Ghetto Justice, Lives of Omission, and Forensic Heroes III.

@Fox, lol – Yes, I can think of one – Elena Kong. But her role, and the drama, was not popular enough to get into Top 5.
When analyzing Myolie’s performance, independent of other factors, she is definitely not Best Actress material. However, factoring in her “popular” competitors from last year, then yes, she was the one that stood out the most.
Oh, I forget. Yoyo Mung and Kristal Tin were also nominated last year, and I would prefer them winning the award over Myolie. However, these awards are more based on popularity than anything, so… no comment.
Basically acting isn’t important now. A good role and ppl will say the acting is good. A bad role and the acting is bad. So I won’t comment about the acting solely now but the whole package. Last year Myolie has this whole package and she won as predicted. So it isn’t a material. I think Myolie deserved to win 100% last year, for the whole package she had.
I think it’s also a matter of consistency and versatility. She acted in a range of series and they were all distinct, and pulled in high ratings. Can’t say the same for the other actresses. I think, it was just due that Myolie won Best Actress, when you look at it cumulatively.
@Fox – I am not disagreeing with you. I expected Myolie to win because, like you said, she had the best package. However, if TVB likes to run like that, then she shouldn’t have won Best Actress for JUST COTRH, but also for GJ and TRP. My main issue here is that Myolie won for COTRH when in fact I think she performed better in her other 2011 dramas. Myolie winning Best Actress, and for an undeserving role, is TVB’s ways of not just promoting Myolie but also the drama.
Anyways, I know my complaining is useless here because this is not how TVB works!! I tend to go off tangent in a TVB fantasy world.
Who cares abt. the Tvb awards anymore? Soon we will have the CTI awards and other awards at other channels.

If CTI becomes a huge success, I hope some other company will sponsor an overall television awards for all TV stations in Hong Kong, kind of like TV version of the HKFA or Taiwan’s Golden Bell awards!! That would be awesome, and not to mention, way more credible!

I think it’s because of 620’s protection that makes them have limited abilities. They’re not really given a chance to do anything challenging besides doing the same leading roles (and most of them tailored-made roles, meaning, they’re not really “acting”) and being worked to death.

Charmaine was 620’s fave and look at her now, still good out of Txb. Not all 620’s fave are only having Txb series to survive now, for example KC, LF, Myolie who are having second career life out of Txb. I guess Fala will be able to stay, too as she has Neway Sai siu ye :p.

He does not. He did not complete form 5, but only up to form 3. In fact he lied by omission before, it was reported in the news I believe.

Uhm, I just wonder when his 搜神记 series will be released? I really like the novel they based on and I’m curious of how they make these characters into series. TVB ruined 搜神记 so far by the lame series named Legend of the demigods. Such a bad series.

Acting is subjective… One person can love another’s acting while another person can really hate it… I think that is how the celebs that aren’t that talented survive in the circle…
