Sheren Tang and Andy Lau Were Childhood Friends

In his concert series at the Hong Kong Coliseum, Andy Lau Tak Wah has invited numerous celebrities and personal friends to guest star onstage. The night before, Sheren Tang Shui Man joined Andy onstage and sang a song. Sheren even revealed that he was the first boy she brought home to see her parents!

When introducing Sheren before the audience, Andy said, “This woman was my childhood friend. We knew each other from school. Everyone has witnessed her efforts. Let’s welcome Kau Ku Neung!”

Sheren revealed, “Andy was the first boy I brought home to meet my Daddy!” Andy laughed, “Yes, I have met Sheren’s parents!” When they were students, Andy and Sheren often played together. He even visited her home on certain occasions.  Sheren was surprised that Andy described her as a childhood friend, since she always regarded him as a big brother. Andy’s success in the entertainment industry became a motivating factor for Sheren as well.

Andy said, “I knew that Sheren wanted to challenge herself and have others appreciate her acting, so I nominated her to enter the TVB training class.  I am quite smart, since I spotted her talent. I knew one day she would become Kau Ku Neung!”  Sheren was grateful for Andy’s praise. Each time she grew tired from working and thought about taking a break, she saw that Andy continued to work very hard. Sheren reminded herself that she should continue to put in her best efforts.

When Andy invited her to perform at the Hong Kong Coliseum, Sheren grew very anxious. However, she brought forth her loyalty to sing the song <明星>.

Veteran actress, Helena Law Lan, also appeared as a guest performer at Andy’s concert on the same night. Helena was awarded the Hong Kong Film Awards’ Best Actress in 2000, the same year that Andy Lau received the Best Actor Award. There was much excitement when the results were revealed that year. Helena and Andy worked together on TVB series, Return of the Condor Heroes <神鵰俠侶>. Andy said, “I greatly admire Helena . While filming Return of the Condor Heroes, Helena put on ‘ugly’ make-up without any complaints. Her professionalism greatly affected me.” Other veteran artists such as Nam Hung and Wu Fung also appeared at Andy’s concert to support him.

  1. As much as I love Andy, I think that he’s trying too hard to look youthful, he’s too skinny and his style is too trying. It’s kinda sad because he can definitely be an Asian George Cloony or I should say that he is.

    1. How can he not be skinny? He works like a maniac!

He’s not someone that’s trying to act youthful. He’s just a very laid back person so that’s why he may be portrayed as young. I do agree with you to an extent though, since I don’t see him embracing his maturity the way Chow Yun Fat is.

Chow Yun Fat is my George.

  2. Sheren has appeared in some of the 5 Tigers TV series back in the 80’s.

    The 5 Tigers are :

Felix Wong Yat Wah, Micheal Miu Kiu Wai, Andy Lau Tak Wah, Tony Leung Chiu Wai & Kent Tong Chun Yip. They were famous back then and do hope to see a reunion of the 5 in a movie.

  3. omg i remember helena law in return of condor heroes. she scared the hell out of me when i was a child lol.
And thats so cute about sheren and andy being childhood friends lol

      1. I think she played guo jing’s blind shi fu – the eldest of jiang nan qi gai.
Yeah, I remember freaking out every time she appeared. As a child, I kept wondering why someone so freaky can be the “good guy”.

      2. Helena played the crippled wife of the master of Passionless Valley who wanted to marry Little Dragon Girl. She was crippled by her husband.

      3. Oh okok, thanks so much for the info.. Did she also play the same role in Return of Condor Heroes with Louis Koo?

      4. @Kidd – i thought that role was her ’95 version .. did she play the same role in the older series as well ?

      5. Helena played the same character/role in the 83 and 95 version. She did such a great job that they cannot find anyone better..

  4. WOW, what a big surprise to me since I have liked Andy, SHeren and many other stars from the 80s for over 20 years… I can’t believe they never mentioned this(or did I miss something back then?) before. I am sooo happy that they are still friends after all of these years. I am also really happy that Andy still remembers his days at TVB and his friends and collegues as well. It’s great to know that Helena is a friend of Andy’s too. It brings back soo many memories to see them all together again… I hope that one day they can do another series(or maybe a movie since I know that Andy will probably never come back to TVB or any other company to film a full length series but who knows since anything is possible)together.

    1. HeTieShou, I was surprised by this friendship between Andy and Sheren too. Andy does seem to value his old friends “nim kau” as he keeps in close touch with Felix Wong and visited the set of “Gun Metal Grey” presumably to see Michael Miu mainly and have a gathering among the 3 Tigers.

I don’t think Andy and Sheren may be very close friends now (they probably don’t each other that often) due to different career paths. But Andy seems to “nim kau.”

I saw Andy at a concert in Atlantic City, NJ many years ago. He’s not a very good dancer, but he holds the stage well. Plus he has a very easy-going flirtatious charm about him.

      1. Jayne, I think you are right and being such a long time fan of Andy, I can tell that he values his old friends and collegues a lot. However, since I think he has too many of them that it is hard to keep up with everyone. You are right, that once people go their own paths, it is hard to stay close and keep in touch on a regular basis. I think that is more for if you are really really close friends, but that can only be maintained with a small number of people.

I am glad that Andy is still close with Felix and Miu though. He is ok with Tony and Kent too. I don’t think Andy and SHeren has ever acted together in a series before. I think that is part of the reason why I didn’t know that they were friends before.

I have never seen Andy in a live concert since I never have anyone to go with when he comes to my area. I agree that he is not a great dancer but has a lot of charm and an attractive personality.

  5. This photo of Andy Lau isn’t very flattering. He looks like an older, older and I mean older version of Edison Chen. The guy should just retire from being a pin-up boy. Isn’t he like past 40 years old.

      1. Iampheng, I think Andy admitted to getting botox injections earlier to maintain his youth. He still looks great and females of all ages still love him.

      2. Jayne, I remembered Andy mentioned about the botox in one of the interviews.

    1. Well everyone ages so I don’t understand why everyone expects Andy to have to keep on looking young? Andy is going to be 50 but I must say that he looks good for his age. Age is just a number and I believe that if you are young at heart, it will come out to the surface…

    2. Andy has been looking old for awhile already, but he is still hot

  6. Witnessing Sheren’s magnificent rise to popularity after “War and Beauty” and continuing to stay at the top, it makes me wonder if her good frieend and fellow actiing classmate, Maggie Shiu will have a second peak in her career again?

Ever since breaking up with Ekin, Maggie has never been the same since. She seems to have lost that spark in her and she admitted that she had more confidence in her own acting when she was young. Maggie had chances to shine in many subsequent Jonathan Chik series, but her acting again seems to lack passion, unlike Sheren.

    1. To me, Maggie’s acting has not improved but not saying she’s bad. I believe she’s needing a break-through role where she can fully grasp the character again.

She had such great chemistry with Deric Wan. i don’t think she’ll ever find a better co-star.

I was hoping for a Deric Wan break-through but as we can see – that seems rather impossible. These past few years, several veterans tried to make a comeback in TVB but have failed, i.e. Michael Tao, Flora Chan, Esther Kwan. They didn’t fail in terms of performance but more on the fact that they weren’t able to generate “umph” or they just wanted to retire from shooting tv series with TVB.

    2. I don’t think it is just the acting, but also the types of roles/characters that they get to play that will bring them to fame or not. I see a lot of talented actresses/actors, however, they don’t get popular or famous because they don’t get the right roles or opportunities.

Sheren got popular in War and Beauty and then played that role in Rosy Business 1 and 2 and probably other roles that really rose her to the top. Back then Sharen played Zhu ZHi Ruo in Heavenly Sword which also rose her to fame. Basically, I think throughout your career you have to continously have roles/characters in good dramas that can continously make you shine and stay at the top. Maggie had her fame back then, but it seems that she isn’t getting any good roles in any good dramas lately so she doesn’t seem to be getting any more famous…

  7. I don’t know they were friends since Andy and Sheren never act together in any TVB serial?

    1. They did. The Yang Saga series. All the 5 Tigers were in there too. Sheren had a camero apperance for few episode. At that time she was still a freshie.

      1. SHe did? I don’t think so.. I think you are referring to Maggie Siu. She played Guan Yin’s student and did not even have a speaking part but was in there. She flew in with all of the other gods at the very beginning, but Sheren was not in there at all.
