Vincent Wong Matures as a Father and Actor

With the exodus of first-line actors leaving TVB, younger actors were given a golden opportunity to prove their talent. TVB action drama, Tiger Cubs <飛虎>, coincidentally gathered several of TVB’s most promising young talent, such as Vincent Wong (王浩信), Him Law (羅仲謙), Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪), and William Chak (翟威廉). Twenty-eight-year-old Vincent Wong was taking on increasingly prominent roles, while showing his maturity as an actor and father.

Vincent had entered the entertainment industry as a singer. The unsuccessful sales of his music albums led Vincent to explore acting opportunities at TVB in 2008.  Vincent said that when his music career had failed, he lost complete confidence in himself. “I always thought that other people were clustering together to gossip about me. I hid myself at home. Fortunately, my manager introduced me to TVB. I started to work hard again and act in TVB dramas.”

Vincent’s tall height and masculine build has led to being cast as police officers in several dramas. In Tiger Cubs, Vincent’s character is motivated to join the SDU since his brother was a successful police officer. In the series, Joe Ma (馬德鐘) will convert the SDU members (including Vincent)  into a true “Flying Tigers” with courage and honor, where completing each mission successfully often meant the difference between life and death.Vincent applied his personal experiences of loss and dejection in Tiger Cubs, in which his character lacked confidence in life. He saw the role as a challenge, since he played against his usual strong, masculine image.

Aside from Vincent’s acting gaining more notice, his private life often graced tabloid headlines. In April, Vincent and his wife, Yoyo Chen (陳自瑤), became proud parents. Taking care of his daughter and watching her grow each day, Vincent’s outlook has matured in life. He indicated that his responsibilities have increased after getting married and becoming a father. Possessing a cheerful and positive outlook, Vincent saw this as an even bigger motivation to work harder in life.

Vincent’s efforts were appreciated by viewers of TVB dramas. Since his breakout performance in Gun Metal Grey <刑警>, Vincent has been dubbed as one of the next generation of actors to likely anchor TVB series in years to come. With the positive reception of Tiger Cubs, perhaps it will not take years before he is able to prove his acting talent.

  1. That is such a sweet picture of Vincent and his daughter!!!

  2. He so big and the baby is so tiny! Cuteeeeeeeee! XD

I’m not too fond of his character in Tiger Cubs because he only seem to exist to prop Him. Hope to see more depth soon. Adored him in GMG and wished Carson could have had a happy ending with Nancy’s character.

    1. Agree with you that his character in Tiger Cubs has yet to impress me and he seems to be in the shadow of Him Law but hopefully this will change as the series progresses.
He is a pretty good actor and I hope to see more of him in the future.

    2. Yeah, the baby is so tiny next to Vincent. Cute. 😀

  3. His daughter seems to be a very good baby ……. sleeping all the time.

    1. Sleeping is what all newborns do. A lot, actually.

      1. Not necessarily. A lot of newborns don’t sleep much especially if they are colicky.

  4. I always thought he can act. He has great potential. Even if I keep forgetting his name.

    1. Arghhh so pissed off!! I didn’t catch episode 1 of tiger cubs, not even kittens for that matter! Why? Because TV showed on weekends (like TVB) and no ads until already shown. Now I have to hope sat got repeat. And I am like if this series is so hot why is it not on prime time daily and shifted to weekends whilst (for all my love for Linda) the behhhhhh Witness Insecurity is in that prime slot?! Now I am like deranged because I am clicking channels hoping I won’t miss 3kingdoms. If it replaces No Good Either Way then that is the slot. If not … I will scream!!

      1. Funn, on the other side of the spectrum, the “behhhhhh” Witness Insecurity is what I drool over everyday and the “famous and fab” Tiger Cubs is what I fell asleep on while watching half an episode.

I suspect I’m too bias and weirdo :p

      2. I with Masaharu.I drove to watch Witness Insecurity every nigh. Maybe because I enjoy performance of Paul Chan., Bosco and Ram Tseung(he so funny). Beside that I would like to watch Linda performance from depress introvert girl slowly develop into not scare of society. I like the scene where Paul Chan extremely soft toward daughter and Linda character only would smile infront of her dad and uncle. So warm and touching.

      3. Tiger Cubs also that bad?

I can’t stand witness insecurity mainly because I can’t stand Linda in there. yes yes I can’t stand her heavy breathing or those stares so OTT reminds me of Gigi Lai at her worst. Maybe you like Bosco? I find the lack of sexual chemistry between the two errr… lacking so it does not feel sexy when such a series should first and foremost be sexy you know? No?

      4. Funn, I’m up to fourth episode. You won’t find any intimate scenes between the two characters through the whole drama, they will have none(told by Linda). NIL. ZERO. Perhaps it’s not your cup of tea then. Simple as that. Ah, and Producer Lau’s trademark is “family feuds”.

Yeah. I like Bosco the same way I like Daniel, Kate, and many other stars and not ashamed to admit that I think he’s hot in this drama 😛

Ah I look so free today! 😀

        SPOILER

Kiu Chi Lam and Hui sir will only start to have a formal eye contact in episode FOUR.

      5. Clarification Funn, I never said Tiger Cubs bad. I fell asleep after a quarter to half-an-episode, perhaps because I was tired from work. I’m not qualified to judge, yet.

      6. @Funn

NO TIGER CUBS IS BEST SERIES ! is big loss if dont watch! WI is boring after saw ep 1 I quit. Bosco charcter too goodie 2 shoes although sometimes look cool and Linda’s acting is horrible and OTT!

      7. a-pop, hey I have company. Wave to you.

Vivien, let’s just put it as my “awkward bias tastes”.

      8. Masaharu,

You don’t need intimacy to show intimacy, you know? Isn’t this suppose to be a love story? Do what the koreans do best. Stare with longing. Stare…. with… longing!

Quite a lot hard sell Tiger Cubs, and the new series. Glad to know TVB is still generating excitement amongst fans even if we are are talking about recycled stuff.

And whilst the rest of the world has move on from Qing Dynasty, TVB is still very much into Qing Dynasty!!

      9. “SPOILER

Kiu Chi Lam and Hui sir will only start to have a formal eye contact in episode FOUR.”

Masaharu, I don’t know why I laughed at this post! Just made me think perhaps you should start a special post with a post by post of how close they will get. So now we know ep 4 = eye contact. Wow, this is like slow brew.

      10. LOL the 1st ep of WI is more a police story and no romance. I quit and rather watch HAL and TC!

      11. if you want action, definitely tiger cubs > witness insecurity. i’m only watching WI cause tiger cubs only airs on sunday. WHY, TVB? WHY???

      12. Agree and Tiger Cubs props are more real too than WI. They also show the real SDU training which make the series more interesting.

      13. lucky that i skip Witness, i already know from trailers and synopsis that witness is an old fashioned low budget cop series. I heard many horrible comments about Linda such as Linda’s expressions look like she was constipating.

      14. @vivien: your comment said it. Tiger is one of the best series this year along with Hippocratic Crush. Ma ming gives one of his best performance ever.

Don’t put the old fashioned Witness and fantastic production like Tiger on the same breath. They are worlds apart!

      15. @Funn: Tiger is must watch. Another cop series High and Low which also look great will air in September confirmed by Raymond.

      16. Funn,
“Arghhh so pissed off!! I didn’t catch episode 1 of tiger cubs, not even kittens for that matter! Why? Because TV showed on weekends (like TVB) and no ads until already shown.”

The format of “Tiger Cubs” is like western TV shows, where each episode should feature independent story. So even if you miss the first episode, you can still follow the rest of the series.

      17. Funn,
“I find the lack of sexual chemistry between the two errr… lacking so it does not feel sexy when such a series should first and foremost be sexy you know? No?”

Why should Bosco and Linda’s relationship have this intense heat that you are talking about? For Linda’s character, who is introverted and closeted, shouldn’t it be an emotional connection first?

Bosco can do the lusting, which he can be capable of, as indicated by his performance in “Lives of Omission.” But he may have interpreted the character as a typical police officer with strong sense of justice?

      18. Bosco is too zen like. He’s like a male Mary Sue who’s smart, good at work, mature, pretty, agile, loved by everyone, nice to everyone. There’s no sense of drama at all. Paul Chun and Ram Tseung has more dramas and ups and down and Ram Tseung is funny. I like his character the most but too bad I won’t continue.

One word to describe Linda is annoying.

      19. @jayne: Funn don’t want to miss ma ming’s praised handsome ruthless killer in the first episode

      20. @lol: already know his role will be boring from trailers and tvb.com descriptions. lucky i choose to skip. Can still watch Ram in RPG 😀

      21. Tiger Cubs is really good and once a week is just way too long of a wait to watch the next episode. Didn’t someone say that it would be airing on both Saturdays and Sundays soon? Please let it be….well at least Three Kingdoms will be airing on Monday so I have that to watch every day.

      22. The schedule for “Tiger Cubs” air dates as follows:

      24. @Gar: Tiger Cubs Saturday episode is on 14th, airing Episode #4

      25. Jayne,

“Why should Bosco and Linda’s relationship have this intense heat that you are talking about? ”

Isn’t it a complete waste of 2 young hot people to not have a two young hot people romance? Sexual chemistry is not the same as lusting but rather that instant chemistry that you know these 2 are meant for one another. Neither have chemistry with one another. It just isn’t there. They’re ok apart but together they’re just bland.

And yes I confess I want to watch 1st episode of tiger cubs for Kenneth and also JJ Jia. You know, so many praises, wanna see for myself.

      26. “Bosco can do the lusting, which he can be capable of, as indicated by his performance in “Lives of Omission.””

I disagree on that. Sucking eagerly on your costar’s face is not the same as lusting or rather passionate intimacy. I am still not pleased that he did not bother to take off his beanie hat in that pivotal scene or Kate did not take it off. Clearly they were told to kiss and they did. And they did not do anything else. To me it was as sexy as a cold shower. The passion is just not real enough. I find more passion in Bowie staring at (is it) Elena in River Of Wine than the full on sucking on the face by Bosco and Kate eventhough Kate is sexy, I still find Bosco like one says in here, too zen like. It is his eyes. Or maybe there’s just no fire in him. Decent guy, not very good actor, but definitely not a very sexy one.

      27. Funn,
“Isn’t it a complete waste of 2 young hot people to not have a two young hot people romance? Sexual chemistry is not the same as lusting but rather that instant chemistry that you know these 2 are meant for one another. Neither have chemistry with one another. It just isn’t there.”

Do you feel that Linda has been successful in portraying this kind of intense chemistry with her other costars?

I found Bosco to have good chemistry with Kate in “Lives of Omission.” Their intimate scenes could have been more detailed, but it’s meant for family viewership.

I thought you were also against dramas selling strong sexual appeal, without necessity?

The plot for “Witness Insecurity” sounds unremarkable and now the romance appears to lack sparks too….

      28. Jayne,

seriously I only ever like Linda’s chemistry with Steven but those are beyond sexual chemistry but it works in the context of family driven drama. I only emphasise on this intimacy thing because I see Witness Insecurity as that sort that should and will work well with such a thing. It isn’t family drama, it is a love story. And it isn’t senior citizen love story, there should be more spark, more lust, more something. Of course it is too early, after all one poster said they just looked at one another in ep 4! But I feel even if they don’t look at each other there should be this sense of they’re perfect fit, and for a young hot couple, should young hot potential romance should be the standard of that? Like you said, it is just lacking; sparks, chemistry, passion, everything. And yes I do get the complain about Linda’s performance, I see it very clearly in this series. I rolled my eyes at how ott she was when she first appeared; if she is trying to portray someone who is anti social or has some social whatever problem, THAT isn’t the way to go about it. she just looks anal, looks in pain because she can’t muster up that pain she is suppose to muster and in turn she looks constipated.

      29. Funn,
Although Bosco and Linda are two young, good looking leads, I don’t see this drama as a good platform for erotic themes. I did not expect any intense chemistry; this drama does not seem to catered towards adult drama.

If anything, it appears to be an “idol drama” with handsome cop rescuing damsel in distress (or introverted heiress in this case). Which works better as an “idol drama” rather than anything with intense adult themes. The police is used more like police props, similiar to “Mysteries of Love” where case development fuels romantic development. I suspect this is what producer Lau Kar Ho had in mind. He was not intent on making an original thriller, nor was he interested in making a highly emotional love story with strong impact.

This is not Mr. Lau’s ambitious farewell project to the audience. It seems very run of the mill recycling of “The Bodyguard” elements.

Reading the synopsis, only Linda’s character design stood out. I can imagine that Bosco’s righteous police officer is quite bland, so neutral and have no faults. This is the typical twenty-something TVB hero that can virtually be played by anyone.

At least Bosco doesn’t smile his endless sunshine smile here I hope, otherwise it would be truly out of place.

      30. to Funn, don’t twist my word. I said Bosco is zen in Witness Insecurity from the 3 episodes I saw not LOO. I watched LOO from beginning to end and he potray cripple Co well and fierce there which is why he get the hypes, but in WI like Jayne said his role is too nice and has no faults and he’s very calm.

      31. are you really watching WI Funn? I only watch 3 episodes and can tell that it’s not solely meant for romance. You sound like you’re not familiar with how TVB work.

  5. Vincent Wong is tall and fairly good looking. Agree that he has lots of potentials.

  6. his acting is still is bland and blah. He needs a deep voice just to get some attention from the audience.

    1. He got potential. Carson was great and he’s tall and young

  7. I hope someone can write an episodic review for Tiger Cubs 🙂

  8. i didn’t like him in GMG at all. he looked all wrong and i didn’t really care for the carson/ah sze pairing. i like him much better in tiger cubs. he might be a bit boring, but at least his character is not as annoying as him’s.

  9. @Funn

NO TIGER CUBS IS BEST SERIES ! is big loss if dont watch! WI is boring after saw ep 1 I quit. Bosco charcter too goodie 2 shoes although sometimes look cool and Linda’s acting is horrible and OTT!

  10. @anoninhk

what? Carson and Nancy were the best characters in GMG beside Felix! Vincent got hot bodies in TC but Himhim got hotter body and more story

  11. Hope TVB will promote him. Can really see him imrpoving with each series.

    1. After Carson in GMG, Vincent has only been in supporting roles. There’s no follow up by giving him at least a second lead.

      1. well, he was the male co-lead in wish and switch. but that’s about it. has he not signed a management contract with tvb, i wonder?

      2. I forgot about WAS because the series mostly about Myolie and Selena Li. He signed.

      3. that’s pretty sh*tty for him then. even him law has acted in more series than vincent since 2010.

  12. hvnt ha tme catch ths show yet..damn sounds promisng

  13. i actually like the show, Witness Security. The only thing which is really bad is Linda’s acting. I am very puzzle why she has been acting for so long and yet there is no improvement in her acting
    It is really dissapointing

    1. I saw Linda last in HOHAV and almost puke at her bad acting. I’m not in the mood to watch another series of her ROFL. Bobby and Evergreen can’t save the series from the Myolie and Linda’s bad acting but I love the supporting actresses. Yoyo Chen was good and pretty like heck!

      1. disagree. Myolie also can’t do anything with this kind of role but I agree about Linda. Not even great actors like Wayne or Sheren can lift a show like this. Linda I reckon her expressions were always wrong in HOHV.

    2. i reckon her acting has actually regressed. i thought she improved heaps after heart of greed, was at her best in a journey called life, and was pretty solid until last year’s river of wine. but ever since this year, i think she’s kind of lost her spark. didn’t like her in any of her three series. or maybe it’s just cos her characters aren’t really likeable. her role in witness insecurity is nothing like miss koo, who i really liked.

      1. yes, she is actually pretty goo as Miss Koo. The rest have been really have, of course the worst being HOHV. That is a really bad show

  14. Tiger Cubs must win something! It’s different than other TVB series and has better action pack than other series!
