Actresses Tell All in Upcoming “Telling Maria” Episodes

Luisa Maria Leitão (黎芷珊) is back to deliver insightful interviews of renown artists on Telling Maria <最佳女主角>. In the new season, Maria will interview 15 top actresses, and have them talk about their well-kept secrets and innermost feelings. Early teary-eyed clips from Telling Maria already reveal Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) speaking about her abduction and Kelly Chen (陳慧琳) speaking about her miscarriage.

Last year’s segment of Telling Maria aired to critical acclaim, in which Maria invited Andy Lau (劉德華), Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒), Anthony Wong (黃秋生) and other top stars as guests. In the industry for nearly three decades, Maria had extensive friendships with many top actors, who readily spoke about their work, love lives, family and personal experiences on the show. Many of the conversations from the show became hot topics in Hong Kong, such as Nicholas Tse’s skin cancer scare. Maria’s popularity as a host also rose and she won the Best Host award at last year’s TVB Anniversary Awards ceremony.

This season, Maria hopes to recreate the same sensational program with 15 top leading actresses. The actresses who would be appearing in her show include Carina Lau, Kelly Chen, Liu Xiaoqing (劉曉慶), Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文), Anita Yuen (袁詠儀), Gigi Leung (梁詠琪), Veronica Yip (葉玉卿), Vicki Zhao (趙薇), Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅), Charlie Yeung (楊采妮), Carrie Ng (吳家麗), Teresa Mo (毛舜筠), Cecilia Yip (葉童), Angelica Lee (李心潔) and Law Lan (羅蘭).

It was reported that Maria also invited Brigitte Lin (林青霞) and Maggie Cheung (張曼玉). Although Brigitte declined, Maggie was speculated to be the special guest.

Kelly Spoke About Miscarriage

When Kelly had a miscarriage two years ago, she was devastated in losing her twin girls during the fifth month of pregnancy. In an episode of Telling Maria, Kelly revealed the turmoil she went through during the miscarriage, which she had not openly spoken about before. One day while showering, she felt slight discomfort. Although she was brought to the doctor in time, she was told to be bedridden for the remaining five months as there was a high risk of a miscarriage. Despite following the doctor’s instructions, Kelly ended up miscarrying.

Fortunately, with her husband, Alex Lau’s (劉建浩) support and encouragement, Kelly managed to get over the tragedy. She said with tears in her eyes, “He told me then that even if I continued to lie in bed, I might still not be able to save the girls. In any case, they may have been born prematurely which might not have been a good thing. Anyway, we are still young. Definitely there will be another chance.”

Kelly and Alex actually share a touching love story. They had once broken up. However, with their strong love for each other, they finally reconciled and got married. Because they understand each other so well, they are a perfect couple in public as well as in their own privacy. The couple hardly quarrels and provide each other with mutual support.

Speaking of a touching relationship, Kelly and her manager, Chung Chun (鍾珍) also shared a very close friendship. Like a surrogate mother, Chung Chun took good care of Kelly and often gave her advice on how to handle situations and people.  To Kelly, Chung Chun is like a family member.

Miriam and Husband Were Fated

In Telling Maria, Miriam revealed that before her husband, Real Ting (丁子高) met her, he once went to a Taiwanese tea shop with his girlfriend at the time. The tea shop owner’s wife was a fortune teller and she told him that his soul mate was not the woman with her but an older, more famous woman. Years later, he met Miriam and they got married. Amazed by the accuracy of the prediction, Miriam and Real have since gone back to Taipei to find the shop owner again.

Miriam also spoke about her accidental entry into acting. She talked about her complacency and how she lost confidence in her acting, but finally managed to break through with the help of director Law Wing Cheung (羅永昌) when she filmed 2 Becomes 1 <天生一對> and Hooked on You <每當變幻時>.

  1. wow, i wanna go visit that fortune teller as well …

    1. Hmm…. are we really sure what we hear is going to be good? What if it’s something bad? Don’t tempt fate by trying to know what we’re not supposed to know – there’s a chinese saying about secrets not supposed to be leaked or something.
Unless of course we get to know about it accidentally i.e. you’re coincidentally at the fortune teller’s place with a friend who wants to go. The fortune teller happily tells you your fate without any prompting from you 🙂

    2. I have been tricked and scammed by fortune tellers before so not sure if I believe in them anymore. There a few that can be right, but only at times and only for certain people. However, not sure if what they say will work for everyone.

  2. Name and place of fortune teller please ): Hmm these interviews sound interesting

  3. surprise they didn’t pick Cecilia Cheung as a candidate for interview. There are also a few others I’m surprise didn’t get an interview too.

    Sandra Ng
    Sylvia Cheung
    Rosemund Kwan
    Cherie Chung

  4. In my opinion, I don’t find Maria to be a strong host or interviewer. There’s something a bit off putting when I see her speak. She’s not bad but I feel as though she has been hyped up because of her friendships and connections to Asian’s A-listers. Which I understand her popularity in itself is inevitable.

    1. Agree on this, I feel she lacks the power and control if a super good host.

    2. Sad but true! But who would be better as a host?? The only person I can think of is Carol Cheng. She is mature, articulate and confident. She also composes herself really well so it’s comfortable to watch her.

    3. Aside from the big names like Carol Cheng and Liza Wang, I find Astrid Chan to be a good host. But I doubt she has the connections to the A-list guests like Maria.

      1. I agree Stephan Chan is a great interviewer. Too bad there’s no more Be My Guest.

    4. Only Maria’s show was popular, not her as a host. I do agree that she is not a great host. I guess she had no strong competitors last year.

    5. I agree, although I was also happy for her that she won an award last year, esp since the show would not have been possible without her connections.

  5. even if they had Lom Geet Ying, I wouldn’t be interested in the lineup BUT what if there was a roundtable with Edison Chen, Bo Guagua, Cha Seung Won’s son Cha No Ah and Justin Lee (from jail) and ask them to answer questions they were actually innocent of their admitted offenses and doing it to create a negative impression of Asia Ex Japan for the benefit of the Japanese? I’d like to hear their responses. It’s such a strange thing to sacrifice – your reputation – what does it feel like? I can’t even imagine what the sacrifice is for the female participants of the Edison scandal – I don’t want to talk about it, know about it, nothing.

  6. Miriam is fated to have all her fortune cheated by her husband. That’s her fate.
