Christine Kuo, Oceane Zhu, and Candy Chang: Who Will Become Next TVB Fadan?

The Miss Hong Kong Pageant has traditionally cultivated many film and television actresses. However, in recent years, TVB appeared to favor winners from the Miss Chinese International Pageant rather than the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, promoting Chinese women raised overseas instead of local beauty winners. As numerous fadans have left TVB in recent years, newcomers such as Christine Kuo (苟芸慧), Oceane Zhu (朱璇), and Candy Chang (張慧雯) were now offered with incredible opportunities to distinguish themselves and rise to become the next leading lady!

In the film industry, the Miss Hong Kong Pageant created many household names such as Maggie Cheung (張曼玉), Michelle Reis (李嘉欣) and Anita Yuen (袁詠儀), who developed admirable careers. In the television circle, the pageant also produced famous actresses, such as Ada Choi (蔡少芬), Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) and Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), whose popularity extended across the world.

In recent years, it appears that the Miss Hong Kong pageant contestants have failed to carve out successful acting careers. Although former winners such as Kayi Cheung (張嘉兒), Toby Chan (陳庭欣) and Sandy Lau (劉倩婷) are TVB managed artists, they have failed to leave any lasting impression upon the viewers.

“Miss Chinese International” Winners Rise in Prominence

In recent years, the Miss Hong Kong Pageant has created a limited number of leading actresses. Only Kate Tsui (徐子珊) and Aimee Chan (陳茵媺) have risen to fadan staus. In comparison, contestants from Miss Chinese International have been more heavily promoted. Former TVB actresses, Bernice Liu (廖碧兒) and Michelle Ye (葉璇) were among the first leading ladies sourced from the Miss Chinese International Pageant.

Subsequently, Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) and Fala Chen (陳法拉) were also heavily promoted by TVB. Linda also managed to breakthrough her acting in Yes Sir, Sorry Sir <點解阿Sir係阿Sir>and Witness Insecurity <護花危情>. Fala was nominated for Best Actress at the 2011 TVB Anniversary Awards. Recently, she was even given a chance to release her first music album.

Who Will Become the Next TVB Fadan?

As compared with the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, the new breed of actresses emerging from the Miss Chinese International Pageant has forged more desirable careers. Amongst them are Christine Kuo (苟芸慧), Oceane Zhu (朱璇), and Candy Chang (張慧雯) who are currently given many opportunities to shine at TVB.

Winner of the 2009 Miss Chinese International Pageant, Christine was cast in many top rated TVB dramas, such as The Mysteries of Love <談情說案>, and  Forensic Heroes 3 <法證先鋒III>. Recently, she is being featured more prominently in Tiger Cubs <飛虎> and Ghetto Justice 2 <怒火街頭2>, in which she plays the ex-wife of TV King, Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎). Possessing a beautiful face and a stunning 34C figure, Christine is considered as a “sexy goddess” among many male viewers! However, viewers have also commented that she needs to improve upon her acting skills.

After being crowned as the winner of the 2008 Miss Chinese International Pageant, Oceane Zhu was invited to lead in movie, Prince of Tears <淚王子>. In 2010, Oceane was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Awards’ Best New Performer category, as well as the Asian Film Awards. Possessing a bubbly and straightforward personality, Oceane is also being cast in high-profile dramas, Sergeant Tabloid <女警愛作戰>, Love Exceeds the Coastline <情越海岸線> and Season of Love <恋爱季节>. Viewers have commented that Oceane needs to improve upon her Cantonese and drop her Mandarin accent if she wished to strengthen her presence in TVB dramas.

Candy Chang was the second runner-up of the 2010 Miss Chinese International Pageant. As a newcomer, Candy was already featured in popular TVB drama, The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時>, and acting alongside with Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and Tavia Yeung (杨怡). Only 22-year-old, Candy has won praise for her natural acting in The Hippocratic Crush. She will also be appearing in coming TVB dramas, Highs and Lows  <雷霆掃毒> and A Chip Off the Old Block 2 <巴不得媽媽…> .

  1. Christine can’t act if her life depend on it! She’s really awful!!!!!! Candy is not bad… no comment on Oceane…

    1. christine’s voice is just annoying and has the same facial expression in every scene

    1. Oceane Zhu does have a very heavy Mandarin accent, but so does Christine Kuo. And no one has really complained about Oceane being hard to watch.

Christine Kuo is pretty, and she does have a very nice figure, but it’s really hard to watch her when 1) she has very heavy accent and 2) she can’t act. At all. This is where Oceane wins.

As for Candy, I have not seen enough of her. She did well in THC but she didn’t leave me a deep impression like Oceane, but I definitely prefer Candy over Christine.

      1. Addy,
I also like Oceane. She oozes confidence onscreen and thus she comes across as a natural. However, I did watch her film, “Prince of Tears” where she has more emotional scenes, which still needs work. I have not watched too many of Oceane’s acting in TVB dramas, but my impression is that her roles are still too limited to test and strengthen her acting skills.

Oceane’s role in “The Seventh Day” is frankly not too hard to portray, a light role with flirtatious edge. I can imagine some actresses butchering the role, but Oceane was just right for it. However, I have not seen enough of her range to state that she become the next fadan, as it is still too early to tell.

I do sense that Christine is currently more highly valued by TVB though. Christine has received more press coverage than Oceane. I also suspect that Christine has a more moldable personality that Oceane as well, which may contribute to TVB’s decision to promote Christine more.

Ms. Lok allegedly like Candy Chang a lot, so I suspect she will rise quickly in ranks.

In terms of looks, I find Christine to be the most beautiful, followed by Oceane and Candy.

Among the Miss HKs, I find Rebecca Zhu and Whitney Hui to be beautiful. Don’t know about their screen presence though. It’s interesting how beauty pageant winners can have grace and ooze confidence in the competition, but once they are asked to act in dramas, they sometimes lose this confidence and even uttering dialogue becomes a big challenge.

I like Skye Chan for her eloquence. She is a well spoken individual and has good communication skills, as exhibited in hosting gigs.

      2. Rebecca Zhu is already promoted. All her series are big!

      3. I like Skye, too. She is prettier than she was at Miss Hong Kong Pageant. She is good in communications as well, very good in “Scoop”.

She looked very pretty in an ancient drama series as Joe Ma’s wife.

      4. The only problem with Skye Chan is that she is married with a baby. She may not want to participate that much in drama series which would involve early hours of filming.

      5. I don’t have much opinion for Skye Chan. I didnt see enough of her to have any feelings LOL

  2. Between the 3 of them, I’ll choose Oceane. Her acting isn’t that much better, but she has that onscreen charisma.

I haven’t seen much of Candy other than in THC. She reminds me of Bernice Liu.

Christine Kuo is the worst. She doesn’t have the acting skills nor the looks. She’s killing “Tiger Cubs” and GJ2 for me.

Also, does Koni Lui not act anymore after marriage? There’s potential in her.

    1. How about promoting Nancy to fadan status? She’s overdue for the position!

Selina and Natalie are leading already. Next in line are Mandy and Sire (not too fond of her). There are others TVB could promote than these three.

      1. Agree. Nancy Wu should be the next one to be promoted by TVB. She is long overdue, and her acting is very good. It is not fair for Nancy at all. She has worked so hard for TVB in the last 8+ years. She will be 31 years old this September, and if she is not promoted within a year or two, she will be a support actress forever.

      2. agree abt nancy too. and dont think her age 31 could matter much, look at melissa ng who got promoted also in 30+ because there was a shortage of fadans.. but she left at the peak of her career..

  3. I’m going to go against the flow and say out of those three, Christine. But I also do not understand Cantonese so accent/no accent doesn’t make a difference to me. 😛

  4. “Christine Kuo, Oceane Zhu, and Candy Chang”

Christine Kuo, no because her acting is scary and so soon is fadan?

Oceane Zhu I like but again the accent?

Candy, the young lady doctor in hippocratic crush? Isn’t this like jumping the gun?

All 3 of them are not capable yet.

    1. Funn said “All 3 of them are not capable yet.”

Can I change my answer to this? 🙂

    2. “Christine Kuo, no because her acting is scary and so soon is fadan?”

      LOL

    3. You are right. None of them is capable of handling a fadan’s role. None of them is good in acting yet, beside their Cantonese accents.

      1. they need to go to more acting classes be4 jumping the gun!!

  5. I don’t know why TVB is so eager to cast these newcomers in such important roles in a series. Before, I couldn’t really stand Selena Li and Natalie Tong. But if I had to choose between them, I’d much rather give those roles to Selena and Natalie over these new faa-daans. TVB needs to let the faa-daans work their way up, not just spoon-feed them the roles just because they are pretty/34C or whatever. What a disappointment.

  6. “In recent years, it appears that the Miss Hong Kong pageant contestants have failed to carve out successful acting careers.”

This article has a bias for MCI winners. Up and coming actresses from MHK like Mandy Wong (2nd lead in many series) and Sire Ma (Most improved actress and 2nd lead) are better compared to these Kelafare (candy chiang) and bad at acting (christine kuo).

  7. I don’t mind watching Oceane as I found her quite natural in 7 days. Sure her cantonese sucks, but still adorable, LOL.

    The other two KLF material!

  8. i don’t like candy chang. ew. something about her presence onscreen that is awkward and uncomfortable. i dont think she has a star face either. she has a kelefe/supporting look face. teh role in Hippo Crush was too good for her, should of given it to someone else.

i concur with those who like oceane in 7 days, now that is the kind of actress and charisma i dont mind watching.

  9. As of now…none of them. All of them are a long way from being a fandan. Christine and Oceane needs to work on their Cantonese and acting. And we need to see more of Candy. If they’re looking for the next fandans, why not Mandy Wong? or someone who’s actually decent and has been in TVB for a while.

    1. JavaJunkie,
Mandy Wong is already considered as step above Christine, Oceane, and Candy. Mandy will be in Liza Wong’s “A Chip Off the Old Block 2.”

  10. why isnt nancy wu the next fadan.. dont know three of thm..

    1. because TVB has put Nancy to supporting only and it’s sad.

    2. Nancy Wu often over acts (I find anyway). I would put her in the same boat as these three – as someone who needs more time.

  11. These 3 still have a long way to go in terms of quality acting.

From the amount of exposure and roles assigned, Christine seems to be leading the pack due to her looks.

  12. Oceane Zhu! She’s heavily admired when she’s on screen, although she has an accent it never make a moment of her screen time unfavoured- it’s really cute! Christine’s acting makes viewers feel unease and it just doesn’t have the natural flow, and Candy’s expression is alittle stiff and unnatural. Out of the three, Oceane definitely outruns the others! 🙂

  13. In my opinion, none of them are ready for the fadan status! They are still pretty new! I feel that TVB should promote some of their more experienced actresses (e.g. Natalie Tong, Queenie Chu, Joyce Tang, Florence Kwok, etc.)

    1. Joyce and Florence are sadly veterans. They are never gonna be fa-dans. But they can be great supporting next to fa-dans to give credibility in terms of acting and experience.

Queenie Chu us someone I really like but somehow she is not promoted. Withher physique and the fact she can act she can do much more but she is being pushed aside and is now probably better known as the supporting actress. Could it be her past? Or attitude problem? Or too tall?

Natalie Tong is promoted, slowly and that is a good thing. She needs to do away with the OTT acting and she will be fine. But leading again is a question.

I suppose all these new stars are being earmarked for training to see if the viewers will accept them and then allow them to lead and win the ratings war. True, of all 3, Oceane Zhu to me seems the brightest and with the best potential.

But no one seems to remember..Sire Ma? Wasn’t she the it girl not too long ago?

The thing is whatever their acting skills, having to act in many series in whatever roles will surely improve their acting abilities, just that we suffer in watching their progression. But like some China productions, they don’t care. They force these girls down our throat and in the end after some time we are so used to them we think they’re ok. Mediocrity is the new standard. Hopefully 10 years later when they’re still acting, they will be better.

      1. Site ma also annoys me with her acting skills. I don’t understand why everyone praises her, her acting isn’t up to standard. Well maybe that’s just me

      2. True! I like Sire Ma’s acting in OL Supreme. 😛
But it truly depends on TVB :3

      3. My problem with Sire Ma is her accent and more importantly, the fact she keeps stealing glances at the camera, very much aware the camera is there. But these takes practice and instruction. Acting wise, she can act. There lies her potential.

      4. What about Jess Shum? 😮 Her acting is pretty ok.. :3

      5. 1. Oceane
        2. Candy – ok and cute in THC.
        3. Christine – annoying. Bad acting. Rumour queen in the making.

      6. See, this is what I’m worried about; the veterans are the only ones who hold any solid acting, so what will come of it when time moves on, they retire and these current “stars” have to take over the mantle? We’ve followed these artists over the years and it can be safely said, time/experience does not necessarily equate to any improvement. (Maybe poor old Nancy will still be there though, ploughing away…)

  14. I have to agree I want nancy as the next fadan.
Out of three girls it is definely Oceane. She has the looks and her acting is quite well. Her accent is improving which is good.
Christine however annoys me in every single drama especially tiger clubs. Her accent is horrible and acting is terrible. And I don’t reckon she is that pretty.
Candy also annoys me as she looks like chrisitine. And her acting is not that great but better than Christine though.

Overall I think they should promote Oceane but I bet it is going to be christine

    1. Nancy? Will that be a case of Tavia? I mean I like Nancy but leading a series is hard… maybe slowly ease her in by giving her prominent roles first.

      1. agreed. give her meatier roles thn slowly ease her into leading roles.. havent seen nancy in any of the latest series

      2. I would rather nancy than these three girls. I couldnt even imagine if Christine takes on a lead role. It would be a horrible series to watch.

      3. Or it could be we may be infected with the TVB perspective disease aka ep 1 – oh she’s terrible by by ep 20 – oh she is perfect!

      4. Whoever said that Tvb promotes who deserves it?? They just want to promote whomever they like.

      5. Why would Nancy be a case of TY Funn? TY is boring. Nancy is exciting

      6. Because she is not lead actress material and before we are ready they kept pushing her out as one and thus irritating at least me. I am sorry to say that Nancy is more exciting but still as bland. Not everyone can be lead or lead a series.

      7. Actresses tat can act having leading role , audience complaining she no on screen presence and lack of charisma

Actresses that have look and have audience charisma leading, people complaining their acting skill are bad

Actresses that have charisma and very good acting already in their middle age.

lol.. people must understands there are no perfect actresses in TxB tat have actresses tat young ,pretty look, good charisma and good acting skill . It useless to complaint why TVB promote tis n not promate tat actresses.

      8. People are also too quick to judge, and I find that once they judge, there is nothing that will change their mind.

I can see potential in Christine… but people can’t get over her accent apparently. I don’t speak Cantonese so of course the accent doesn’t bother me as much (although I can hear she speaks differently).

I will say I find the accent reasoning interesting though. I don’t think I’ve ever stated I’ve disliked an actor/actress for their accent. Maybe we are just used to accents in the West? I hear accents all the time, every day. I am more impressed when I discover someone can speak more than one language.

    2. Nancy is a decent actress, but (IMO) doesn’t really have a first line actress face. Neither does Natalie Tong for that matter.

I don’t like any of the 3 girls. If i had to choose one, I’d say Candy because she speaks Cantonese the best.

  15. none of the above too.. they are really far from being a TVB fadan.

    1. yes the kei lei feis do a even better job then them. I would instead promote some of the ke lie fei’s rather than anyone of them.

  16. Christine can’t act, not to mention her Canto ability…. I haven’t watched any of Oceane’s performances, so can’t comment much about her. I think Candy is pretty good in THC.

  17. they gotta be kidding. 😛 at the moment, NONE 😛 if in the future, why not groom Mandy Wong? she seems the most promising. what about promoting Selena Li? TVB has a strange succession planning strategy. 🙁

  18. @Jayne/translators

Will the Kevin and Christine gossip translated? That sounds interesting because Christine is ‘hot’ topic now LOL

  19. Ok from the current lines of TVB loved ‘fadans’ who get leading roles:

    1. Myolie=TY (both only get there because everyone else left LOL)
    2. Fala=Linda
    3. Kate

    second line:

    1. Selena = Natalie
    2. Aimee

    outstanding newbies:

    1. Mandy! – Love her!
    2. Sire Ma

    promoted newbies

    1. Rebecca Zhu

    newbies that this article said:

    1. Oceane
    2. Candy
    3. Christine

    1. Where is Linda Chung then? 1st, 2nd or 3rd lead roles?!

  20. How about Elaine Yiu? I quite like her and her acting has improved!

    1. Yeah, she is great and can replace Kate. Actually it’s easy to replace both Fala and Kate.

  21. Of the newbies, what about Grace Wong? Her acting is still very raw, but she reminds me of Bernice Liu in that they’re both good dancers but not that great acting wise.

    1. Grace is too raw and not pretty enough. Can dance is true.

    2. Grace is raw and her looks aren’t the best. I like her, though. She has potential. She’s a lot better than Candy and Christine. If she polished her acting a bit more, she’d be great.

  22. In terms of looks, Christine surely is the best looking one among the three. I don’t like either Oceane or Candy.

Acting – none of them is good.

  23. None of them. Christine horrible. Oceane not appearing much. Candy still raw.

  24. How do we pronounce Oceane?

    Ocean-nee?
    Ocea-nay?
    O-ceaeen?

      1. Hoho thanks! I keep wondering. Oceane is a unique name

  25. These 3 Cantonese sucks so much!! It makes me want to forward everytime I saw them..They should improve their Cantonese first!

  26. I think Candy is the only one who is can act, Oceane isn’t too bad either from Come Home Love. But I just saw Christine in Ghetto Justice 2 and she seriously can’t act at all >.> Her crying was so fake and quite hard to watch. I can’t imagine how many episodes there are going to be of her no offense.

    1. Candy need to show her ability in more series. I’ve only seen her in one and although she’s acceptable as a first timer, it’s too early to tell

    2. Candy is cutie. She remind me of young Bernice 😀

    3. Christine’s acting is a pain to watch in TC. WTF Joe Ma and Oscar fighting for her! For what?

    4. word!! ^^^ same thing in Tiger cubs.. All her crying scenes are… ughh i can’t even describe it. -.- i mean like.. if they’re using christine why not use aimee? at least she can speak better?

  27. oh gosh, this is how disaster start or it already start from the current “fadans”?
and aimee chan is a fandan now???? how??? when???……as if disaster isn’t enough at tvb right now.

  28. So far although voting lines still open Myolie Wu, Kevin Cheng, Tavia Yeung, Moses Chan, Linda Chung, Kate Tsui, Ruco Chan confirmed to attend Starhub TVB Award 2011-2012 and attendance means winning something.

      2. Why must the artiste confirm attendance before the due date? There’s still one week and the results can change. What if the artiste attending suddenly don’t get top spots but they have confirmed attendance so early? Are they going to go back empty handed? Of course not? This award is flawed

    2. Tis Starhub TVB award so bore with Charmaine Sheh always winner in Favorite Actress. Hope tis year either Tavia or Myolie can get tis award by two parties fans fight in the vote. So fun to see whose can get the highest vote qat the end

      1. If you want some fun, better if Christine, for example, wins the Favourite Actress, not any of 5.

      2. lol.. but realistically the 5 fadan and Charmaine have more fans power that vote for them.

      3. Who care about the fan vote, lolz. The voting is still on and the list of attendance with awards is already out. What does it mean?

      4. talking about the attendance list ,it obvious the list are artists that surely can get high vote in top 5 favorite tv character.

    3. This starhub award look as rigged as TVB. Funny that attendance and winners are confirmed before voting ends and this system serves to who has fans with more ample time to vote.

      1. Agreed. So funny. Voting still on but attendance list for awards is out ROFL

  29. this is a joke. Christine is terrible and is ruining Ghetto!

  30. For some reason I just don’t like Christine Kuo. I’m rooting for candy.

  31. Oceane, her accent is terrible but she has a lot of charisma and extremely cute.

Candy is cute but lacks charm and presence.

Christine is gorgeous but I really dislike her because her acting is terrible. I don’t know how much of it is because of her accent but it doesn’t seem to affect Oceane so I blame her lack of acting skills.

  32. Excuse me, next TVB Fadan?

Not in the next 5 years.

  33. oceane – a bit of an annoying kind of cheap mainland accent. ok acting, but all her roles kind of seem the same to me.

candy – arguably the best actress out of the 3 basing on her debut appearance. lacks charm, ordinary looks and little to no presence.

christine – bad acting all around. annoying to watch, needs improvement in all aspects.

knowing tvb, christine will probably be a strong competitor for the most improved actress award this year. no wonder tvb is going downhill, they keep on promoting incompetent actors/actresses and shoving them down our throats.

      1. oh she is from China! I wonder how to pronounce her name? All these very interesting English name.

  34. I like Oceane the most out of these three. She’s bright and is charismatic.

Christine annoys me… But she looks okay. They should go back to dubbing her for the moment.

Candy was okay in THC. She’s decent for a first timer, I guess.

  35. I remember some commenter here claiming Christine somewhat resembles Aimee Chan, but was immediately shot down. I can sort of see the similarity in the photo above though… Both not my cup of tea, however.

Oceane I can see slotting in quite nicely in the Queenie Chu roles.

Candy has the blandest look. Is she from mainland? She doesn’t really have that HK feel to me (judging purely from that photo above).

    1. Interesting you mention Queenie Chu… I really enjoy her acting… but she’s rarely mentioned in any article. Her voice can grate sometimes, but she knows how to act. Anyone know why she doesn’t receive more attention? Is it still because of the scandal way back when?

  36. Three of them equally bad , how to choose? . I think recently all of the actress put too much make up. Christine kuo in GJ 2 , her face look so glaze. Oceanna zhu, her fake eye lashes always annoyingly long.

  37. I have never watched Oceane Zhu in any drama series or movies. Cannot comment on her acting.

Here is what I found from Wikipedia:

“Océane Zhu Guang-Xuan, (born on April 4, 1987) is a Chinese-born actress based in Hong Kong. In 2008, Zhu represented Paris to participate in Miss Chinese International Pageant and got first in place in the contest. In the same year, she gained the Hong Kong residential identity and started to practice Cantonese. In 2010, she was nominated for Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Performer and Asian Film Awards for Best New Performer.”

  38. As per Wikipedia:

“Candy Chang (Chinese: 張慧雯), born in November 10, 1989 in Hong Kong, won Miss Chinese Toronto in 2009,[1] and Miss Chinese International Pageant 2010 second runner-up.[2] She is currently a TVB actress. She recently premiered on the popular TVB drama “The Hippocratic Crush” (On Call 36小時) acting the role of Kan Ching Ching 簡晶晶.[3]

Candy Chang aspires to be an outstanding actress. She can speak English, Putonghua, Cantonese, and Japanese.[4] She attended Unionville High School. She has a 3rd year university education majoring in Graphic Design and Visual Arts(from the OCAD University). She did some life-guarding in the past, and she claims it helped her with her role in The Hippocratic Crush.

She won the Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant 2009 and being the Miss Photogenic and Miss Popularity. In November 2010, she represented Toronto to compete in the Miss Chinese International Pageant 2010 and was a huge favorite due to her having one of the best figures.”

  39. Out of the 3, I can see Candy Chang stepping it up to be a lead actress after 5yrs. She’s young & can speak Cantonese clearly out of the 3 of them.

Christine has the beauty but language clearity (oral) would be a barrier for her to be a main lead.

Oceane Zhu again similar to Christine but at least in my point of view lacks the elegance & charisma that Christine carries.

Overall, I’ll go with neither the above & predict that there will be a new newcomer that will take the lead

    1. Candy is the youngest and she landed herself a good role and decent debut so Candy does have the advantage.

  40. I am a guy, and I find Christine pretty hot. But her horrible acting is a huge turn off.

The problem is so obvious though. When she speaks, her tone never varies to reflect emotion. This is another problem with her face. Her face is like stoic and never changes. If she works on having her emotional expression and tonality of her face change along with the expression of her lines, her acting would improve a lot.
