Andy Lau to Play Villian in “Detective Chinatown 4”

The success of the Detective Chinatown <唐人街探案> film franchise is again supported through the record-breaking box office sales of its third installment during Lunar New Year. Director Chen Sicheng (陈思诚) exposed that a fourth movie is in the works, with Andy Lau (刘德华) joining the cast as a villain!

Excitement for the suspenseful comedy continues after it was hinted Detective Chinatown 4 will be set in England. For fans of the franchise, it is well-known that the twist and turns and investigation methods are inspired by the best three mystery authors of all time such as John Dixon Carr, Ellery Queen, and Agatha Christie. These writers are all respectively hailed from the United States and England. As the second film had already taken place in New York, the next stop is obviously London to explore more of its iconic mysteries and detective figures such as Sherlock Holmes.

Plans are still in motion for the next movie, so there may be possible changes to the set location. During Detective Chinatown 3’s online public chat, director Chen Sicheng (陈思诚) and lead actor Wang Baoqiang (王宝强) explained that while the ending of the third film left viewers hanging at London’s Big Ben to suggest the story will continue there, it is still unconfirmed because of uncertainties caused by the pandemic.

One certainty that Chen Sicheng confirmed is that Andy Lau will be playing the crime master, Q. The reason behind casting Andy is because the actor needs to be highly recognizable for maximum impact, and Chen Sicheng believes Andy is best suited for it.
