Crystal Fung on TVB’s Restrictions
As often mentioned, being a TVB artiste is not easy. Fame comes at the cost of long filming hours and loss in freedom. For rookie actress Crystal Fung (馮盈盈), she learned of this after entering the entertainment industry. Wanting to be successful and famous, she joined the 2016 Miss Hong Kong pageant and signed with TVB. But she quickly learned of TVB’s strict restrictions in which every artiste must abide by.
In a recent episode of talk show Young and Restless <後生仔傾吓偈>, Crystal, Louisa Mak (麥明詩) and Luk Ho Ming (陸浩明) talked about the challenges of being in the entertainment industry. They also gave tips to young aspiring artistes who wish to enter the industry. Revealing their stories one by one, Crystal, who won Most Improved Female Artiste at the 2018 TVB Anniversary Awards, revealed that she was working as a freelance model. Her friends suggested that she join Miss Hong Kong if she wanted greater fame.
Though Crystal is currently happy where she is with her career, she talked about TVB’s restrictions. She said, “Artistes cannot leave Hong Kong without approved permission from the company.” Louisa replied, “We are the company’s assets.” Crystal agreed and continued, “Yes, that’s right, all of our work has to be formally processed and approved through all the departments in the company, and they have to confirm that you really won’t have any work for one month before you can take leave and go on a holiday.”
The 24-year-old actress did not outright display displeasure on the restrictions, but more so, gave insight to some of the restrictions at the company. She and Louisa also commented they will never secretly leave without informing TVB.
