Grace Chan Recalls Criticism on Her Thin Body

Miss Hong Kong 2013 winner Grace Chan (陳凱琳) guested on the show A Beautiful Legend of 50 Years <美麗傳奇50載> to share her pageant experience alongside other winners Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗), Tiffany Lau (劉穎鏇), Veronica Shiu (邵珮詩), and Carat Cheung (張名雅).

Nine years since taking the crown, Grace could not help but tear up while watching a clip of her pageant. She expressed, “I don’t think there’s any woman who would have liked her body shape or face to be the only thing worthy of value. That was what happened–I remember it was such a huge blow to me because everything was so mentally and physically taxing.”

Despite being one of the pageant favorites, Grace also experienced intense scrutiny at the same time. “Having everyone and the media constantly focus on how your face is the only value was very overwhelming. My family would see it in the papers, but they would be too cautious to bring it up. I also had to act like it wasn’t a big deal, but it honestly weighed a ton.”

With heavy criticisms on her thin body, Grace could not understand why the public found her weight of 88 pounds to be a great flaw. “I believe being healthy is the most important. Besides, there was nothing I could do about my body type.”

Rebecca also shared that the image of a Miss Hong Kong weighs heavily on the winner. “After the pageant, you would realize that there are certain jobs that you cannot do such as performing or attending events at a bar,” she said.

Veronica followed with her life changing after the contest. As being a public figure, she would need to dress herself up nicely and make sure everything is perfect before she leaves the house.

  1. 88 pounds is not healthy for an adult body. I remember this young whipper snapper telling me how people criticize Victoria Beckham and Kate Middleton and said they cannot gain weight, that is their body typr. I told them to look at older photos of them, see how healthy , yet slender they were. That kid avoids me now after making an idiot of herself.
Now I read Grace saying this is her body type. No Grace, this is your choice type. You can put on a few pounds and still be healthy and slender. You do not look good or healthy. I do not find your body attractive. Then again, a pale look, long hair, a super skinny body and red lipstick is what Chinese and other Asian men seem to go for.

    1. Totally agree, 88lbs is underweight for her height. Never like her anyway but her comment on 88lbs is healthy making me vomit

  2. People who are always stressed by weight gain and are always dieting, will often look at the mirror and see themselves as overweight…they will always want to be slimmer… Often is in all in their minds.
Is being slim healthy? I know many slim people who get ill very easily…

Being healthy is not defined by how slim you are… Unfortunately many youngsters are told the same message thus many are starving themselves to keep slim/thin and denying their body of the right nutritious.

  4. Being an Asian who has been small and slim since young, I can relate. Due to high metabolism rate, eating more would just mean pooping out more without adding any extra pounds and the envy of friends who tells me they get fat by just breathing while I envy them for having fuller figures.
Have had identification checked to ensure I’m of age when we go out to certain places and it was embarassing.
I feel before one criticises another for saying its their body type need to give them benefit of the doubt. Some say that to justify their skinny obsession while genuine ones really do not have a choice about it. When young, have even tried taking those weight gain drinks which wasn’t effective.
Like her, I think regardless of genetics, body type/size, most important is that one is healthy in body, mind and spirit.

    1. There are many people, not just Asians, who are genetically very slim. Nothing wrong with that, and that does not mean they are not strong or healthy. Actually, I know people who tried all kinds of fat building foods to attain some girth, but to no avail. What I am sick of Grace wagging her tongue once more, trying to make it look like she was criticized for being so skinny when she cannot help it. Yes she can, if I must borrow Obama’s words, lol. She looked voluptious before, while still maintaaining a slender but healthy body weight and shape. Too bad fans are buying it. Her words are BS. The reason she was critidized is because everyone knows she purposely wasted herself away, and expected sympathy and understanding.
When the spotlight is on other celebrities, Grace starts flapping her mouth like a windmill parrot to make headlines again. Has anyone ever noticed that.

      1. I get you. If I really know these people and how fake they are in real life I’d feel disgusted too.
That’s why I usually take celebrities news/rumours/gossips with a pinch of salt.
I may watch dramas/movies if I think I like them but not to the point of fan obsession that makes me take what they say as the gospel truth.
As we know, these people have social media accounts for a reason – to ensure they’re not forgotten and remain relevant.

  5. I think it’s fine if she is and feels truly happy and healthy. Despite the “ideal” body type declaring her as underweight, it doesn’t mean she’s 100% unhealthy. She frequently posts cakes and sweets on her IG stories, so if she was trying to manage her weight at 88lbs, I don’t think she’d eat sweets that often. If you really have to say she’s unhealthy, then maybe she grew up with a deficiency that caused her to stay thinner than standard body types, but that still doesn’t mean she’s unhealthy. When she stated that this was her body type, instead of assuming that this may encourage others to follow in her footsteps, maybe she just wants to clarify that being exceptionally thin compared to others can also equate to being healthy. If I were in her shoes, I would be happy to have that slender figure. That way I could eat more lol but I wouldn’t target myself to be her size either.

    1. She has no deficiency. She was heavier before. You know how many cekebrities bake cakes and cook food and display it on their IGs. They don’t even eat the displayed products. It is all about keeping their fans interested, all about image and staying relevant. There is a wonderful, warm, fluffy big ears celeb who makes fans believe he is a sweet innocdnt angel on his IG and other outlets. Truth is, he does not like women, literally, and makes fun of their loojs, smells and everything. He thinks his fans are crazy sick, he could care less about the things in the environment, about fans and their lives, and all he loves to do is take, take, take. He only cares about hinself, is stubborn, selfish, cold ruthless unforgiving and has no sensitivity towards mankind. The only other person he cares about is someone he cannot have… a married man.Fans think he is the greatest thing since life itself. Me, I know better. I am not saying Grace is like him, heck no, she is not, she is not sinister. She is a great mom and wife, but these celebs do things to promote their image and stay relevant.

  6. I have been skinny from young, and everyone around me kept implying it was my fault for not eating more. Even today, I notice that while people have been reserved in their comments on overweight people, they do not care when they label people as skinny or bamboo.

    1. Haha… I feel you. Even random people would say they’d give me their fat if possible. I’d take that if I could choose where they’d go too and tummy isn’t where I want it to be.
Anyway, as we age our metabolism rate slows down and I’m now able to put on weight. Dratted thing is they stubbornly stay more at tummy area so regular sit-ups are a must. I’m too lazy to do more. Just glad that nobody can call me skinny anymore.

      1. Exactly! The only fat I managed to gain all goes to the tummy and nowhere else. I am almost 50 yo soon but am still underweight.

    2. Yes! That’s why I sympathized when so many comments were so negative towards Grace. People recognize, therefore, tend to be careful or show support when it comes to overweight people, but when it comes to the slender group, people can be really harsh about it. Grace is barely in the spotlight anymore. She pops up once in a while. Maybe she was heavier before, but that doesn’t mean she could maintain that size. It’s like people who lose weight but later bounce back. This does not mean that they want to regain their weight. It just happens. It’s the same situation.

    1. It’s just the blonde hair that makes her look ‘more western’. She always had atypical features for a Chinese person, just like her brother, and the blonde hair makes her look even more atypical.

  7. i don’t know why people would find it to be a flaw. it’s like picking bones out of an egg. i am totally jealous of it. i only know of one other person who’s like that and a mom of 3. i see her eating sugary things and she’s slim and thin. there are people who are just metabolically blessed.

  8. Like some youtuber said, wtf is she complaining about? she won the Miss HK title that year, married to Kevin Cheng, rich dad lol and hello you joined a beauty pageant, what do you expect?

    1. She was criticized because netizens and people in the industry know that Grace purposely and willingly let herself get to 88 pounds. As we age, we put weight on. Grace was healtheir looking before. She has become a mother of two and she is still the same size as she was during her pageant days???. Either she has developed a problem, or she is purposely staying slim. I believe the latter, hence her criticism during the pageant. At her height, that is not a healthy weight for an adult who was looking healthier some years ago. I also can’t see why she whines about everything. She thinks she is the only one who has ever been criticized? She is a bit of a narcissist and spoiled brart. Lot of commenters just don’t get it. I also believe she had Post pregnancy PS. I know a change in hair can alter a woman’s facial feaures, but not that drastically.

  9. Wait, she didn’t like people judging her purely on her body while she was a Miss HK contestant? She joined a beauty pageant that literally puts all the emphasis on physical appearance. How does that make sense? Seems like just humble bragging to me about how she’s just like the average person too.

  10. Maybe it’s hard for certain people to gain weight? I mean she’s always been very skinny since young. I believe gaining a pound a two wouldn’t hurt. But as long as she’s happy and confident with her body, she shouldn’t care how others look at her.

  11. Well, to be fair, she has a right to air her grievances about the pageant. Yeah she was underweight and she got lots of comments about that, but who in HK doesn’t like stick skinny women? I think she just needed a topic to bring up during Ms HK segment and this was the thing that triggered the most feelings for her. If she really cared that her face/body is the reason that ppl focus on, she wouldn’t be a model now, would she?

    1. Then Grace Chan is a hypocrite much. First she was looking healthy, yet slender, and she then went to 88lbs, a weight that is not healthy for her height, considering she is an adult that was healthy before. She also seems very proud of her weight. So she lost a lot of weight, too much, and entered the biggest beauty pageant in Hong Kong, and did not expect people would notice, and talk about it. Did she think that they were going to critique her brain??!!, heavens forbid. She kept that unhealthy weight because Asian men love it, because she is an actress and model. Now she wants to convince the world that is her natural body type. Not only is it an insult to her fans, although they don’t see it that way. It is a huge insult to the grown adults who are extremely skinny in a natural way, and can’t gain a pound, no matter what they do, and for the women, no matter how many children they birth.
If she was always like this, you won’t hear a peak out of me.
