Kristal Tin’s Greatest Wealth is Not Money, But Rather Unity in Love

From the third party incident to considering divorce, Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) has always been very open about her marriage to Chapman To (杜汶澤). Speaking in her usual candid manner, Kristal reveals how her marriage survived multiple odds, including their lavish lifestyle when their money flowed abundantly.  However, Kristal realized that money is not their greatest wealth, but rather their love and unity in marriage.

“When we had a lot of money, we experienced the downside to our relationship. No matter how much money we spent, it was all on the surface just for show. Without experiencing a loss, we’ll probably still think we are on top of the world, lost in our little bubble. I had to stop and ask myself – did a spontaneous vacation to London and spending a few thousand dollars to shop truly make me happy?

“Chapman made a hefty income filming for Infernal Affairs <無間道> while working at the radio station. When someone recognizes you on the street after working for so many years at ATV, you feel like you finally accomplished a little success. I don’t want to exaggerate, but one time, I woke up and asked Chapman, ‘What should we have for breakfast?’ He suggested sharkfin and we really went to have sharkfin for breakfast. At that time, we ate and bought whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted.

“Chapman really wants to take care of me and provide me a good life. When he had spare time from filming, he would make extra money from playing mah jong and buying stocks. But then we realized that we were living a very empty lifestyle. Even though we lead a much more simple life now, we are both very comfortable. Chapman deposits all of his income into our company’s account and I give him his requested $15,000 HKD allowance each month. He thinks he’ll play around too much if he has too much money so he likes this set amount. This makes him more disciplined in how he chooses to spend it. Besides, he thinks it’s fun!”

“Chapman and I believe that a united love is the greatest wealth, not measured by how much money you have in your bank account. We now have a common goal – which is to live a comfortable and happy life – something that money cannot buy.”

      1. @Funn: In a nut shell (sorry if my summary doesn’t do justice to Kristal’s explanation in the interview): Kristal said that at one point in her life (like back during her youth) she really wanted to have children, but the past few years, she and Chapman have been very happy / content with their lives and don’t feel that having children will make them any happier. Also, Kristal’s mom was diagnosed with cancer last year and even though she doesn’t mind taking care of her mother, the entire ordeal changed her mind a bit about having children – she said that if something were to happen to her or Chapman in the future (or when they reach old age and can’t take care of themselves), she doesn’t want to burden their children with having to take care of them….she doesn’t want to be selfish and burden them with such heavy responsibility.

      2. My admiration for Kristal has grown tremendously after finding out that she knows taking care of of loved one who is sick is very difficult (physically and emotionally) and doesn’t want to burden her kids with that responsibility, which is why she doesn’t want children. From this alone, I feel that Kristal would make an excellent mom because she puts her children’s needs first before her own needs.

Unfortunately, I feel that many Asian parents have kids just so there’s someone to take care of them when they are old. I feel this is very selfish thinking! People should have children because they love and want them, not as a security measure so there’s someone to take care of you when you are old!

  1. That’s great not many celeb or ordinary ppl see that money can’t buy love-happiness.

  2. I find Kristal and Chapman’s love story to be inspiring, especially she is willing to accept his faults. He has learned of his own rashness too, thus asks his wife to pay him to reduce his lavish spending.

Kristal also posted many photos of Chapman and herself on her Weibo blog and they do seem very loving in the photos.

  3. I like her honesty. And he is lucky she is not spending all his money and can even be the family accountant. A sensible husband who has the luck of marrying a sensible wife.

I just don’t understand why what appears to be a continous interview is appearing in a serialised article? Is it originally that way? Giving an impression suddenly so many articles on them.

    1. @Funn: Actually, Oriental Daily does do this quite often — they do a long interview with a particular artist and break it up into 5 parts to publish on 5 different days. They’ve been doing it for months already (maybe it’s even been a year? I’ve lost track…) and have already interviewed tons of artists.

I’m actually not a fan of Oriental Daily at all, but the interview series that they’ve been doing have all been quite good so far…

  4. yup. hope their relationship can last long. i too find them ‘good’ cos they post their photos online (FB/Weibo) while other celebrities are ‘hiding’ their photos. lolz.

  5. Chapman and Kristal are definitely on my list of favorite celebrity couples! I really love the honesty in their relationship and also the obvious genuine affection they have for each other.

Defnitely agree with Jayne that this couple’s story is very inspiring…I mean, how many celebrity couples out there are willing to be so frank and share with everyone the flaws in their relationship and how they overcame those flaws? I always enjoy reading about these two!

Oh, and it’s so sweet of Chapman to always cook for his wife — even during that time a few months ago when he was so sick he could barely even stand up! I remember in one of the interviews, Kristal said that when she returned from China to take care of him during his illness, the first thing he asked her was if she had eaten yet and if not, he would go cook something for her to eat…aww, so sweet!

  6. Haha, shark fin for breakfast. Bless the pair of them. I’m glad they worked together to overcome any adversities in their relationship and didn’t just throw in the towel.

  7. <3 love is amazing <3 LaLaLa

I always like her, but I didn't know she was married *oops lol* she is so open with her relationship, so different from other celebrity now a day.

I wonder how they met each other story <3

Is shark fin that good?? $15,000HK per month (approx $2142USD) *dream land*
