Miss Hong Kong 2016 to Feature 50 Contestants

The annual Miss Hong Kong Pageant has become a preferred means for TVB to find new talent. In an effort to increase viewership ratings and promote new actresses, TVB decided to expand the pageant pool from 20 to 50 participants this year.

To attract more applicants, the company will also be recruiting potential candidates from overseas. Several TVB representatives will travel to Canada to recruit applicants in June.

Furthermore, this year’s contestants will be traveling to popular tourist locations for filming, including Japan and South Korea. Many popular Japanese and Korean celebrities will also be invited to join the judging panel.

Former 2013 Miss Hong Kong first runner-up and current TVB actress, Sisley Choi (蔡思貝), voiced her support for the new plan. “It’s a good thing. I’m greedy, because this way, there would be more pretty girls to look at. Back then, there were only 20 contestants, which limited other beauties from participating. Now, there will be more opportunities for the contestants to represent themselves. Different locations have different standards of beauty. The winners will definitely be high quality.”

2013 Miss Hong Kong second runner-up, Moon Lau (劉佩玥), also expressed her excitement over the new changes. “Having so many contestants is a good thing. It gives the audience more choices. They will enjoy watching the show more too. Right now, Japan and Korea are very popular, so filming at these locations will make for good entertainment. Having Japanese and Korean celebrities being judges will give us the opportunity to see some celebrities too.”

  1. I’ve always wanted to participate in Miss HK! Does anyone know if they will be recruiting overseas like USA? Or is it just only Canada?

    1. @angieee I believed Fala Chen and Mandy Cho are both from the USA so I don’t think there should be any problems if you’re from overseas.

      1. @angieee Well I don’t know what to tell you but if you really want to join Miss. Hong Kong all I can say is Good Luck!!!

      2. @asian2015 @angieee Fala Chen competed in the Miss Chinese International after winning the Miss NY Chinese pageant so that’s different from Miss HK. Mandy Cho is originally from Hong Kong so she didn’t have a problem participating in MHK even though she studied overseas.

I guess you’ll have to wait and see if the applications open up to overseas? If not maybe do what everyone else did and participate in the local chinese pageant first? 🙂

      3. @linvin8 thank you for the help:) But Mandy was born in California so how did she participate in MHK?

Yea guess I will wait! It’s says that several tvb rep will travel to Canada for recruitment I wonder if other overseas countries are included as well

      4. @linvin8 yes Mandy Wong is from the USA I checked her profile it says she’s from Sacramento, California. I think Jacquline Wong she’s also from the USA too of New York she’s very cute and has a pretty smile.

    2. @angieee Do you live in an area where there is a Chinatown? I remember (yeeearrrrs ago), that there were applications for Miss HK at the video rental stores (this was in NYC). Maybe you can ask around there.

  2. are there really that many girls? it’s not like miss international. they have very strict rules to qualify for miss hk

    1. @happybi i dont think they’re purely doing this for ms hk. they’re doing this so they can add more ppl to the company and groom more stars. so many of the leading fadans in tvb are previous ms hk pageant candidates, so it makes sense for them to want to open the pool for more people

      1. @happybi yeah, it’s fine to use miss hk to find beauty with talent, but tvb needs to put them in an acting class or someone to teach them instead of putting them on lead roles after the competition.
