Netizens Name TVB’s New Four Great Leading Actors

Known for being one of the largest Chinese-language entertainment companies in the world, TVB has produced some of world’s biggest Chinese superstars. TVB “siusangs”, or leading actors, enjoy high popularity not only in Hong Kong, but also in overseas Asian communities.

However siusangs of the last decade, such as Moses Chan (陳豪), Raymond Lam (林峯), and Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), are slowly branching out to overseas markets and have been appearing less frequently in Hong Kong television, putting TVB in the need to start promoting a new generation of idols.

In a Hong Kong discussion forum, netizens came together to discuss the possible leading actors for TVB’s next generation. Calling them the new big four, netizens agreed that Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Tony Hung (洪永城), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), and Vincent Wong (王浩信) are capable of succeeding the throne as TVB’s next biggest idols.

Ruco Chan Is Versatile

Already seen as one of TVB’s most popular idols of the current generation, Ruco Chan broke out in the 2011 legal drama The Other Truth <真相> and has been leading in TVB dramas ever since. His popularity surged again after starring in the 2013 drama Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>, and he was crowned Singapore’s TV King for his performance in the action drama Ruse of Engagement <叛逃> the following year.

Netizens say Ruco is an extremely versatile performer, praising him to be one of TVB’s most talented actors in recent years. Whether he is playing a professional lawyer, an undercover cop, a sympathetic villain, or a righteous prince, Ruco has shown that he is able to disregard self awareness and be convincing in each role.

Tony Hung Gives Surprises

Tony Hung’s transition from being a highly acclaimed television presenter to an actor was not completely well-received. Although he gave commendable supporting performances in dramas such as Outbound Love <單戀雙城> and Rear Mirror <載得有情人>, netizens feel mixed about his performance in his first leading drama, Captain of Destiny <張保仔>.

Nonetheless, netizens praised Tony’s unique looks, and expressed that he is capable of carrying a drama on his own with his likable humorous image.

Edwin Siu Is Hardworking

Edwin Siu debuted as a popular singer in 2002, but a controversy forced him to quit and move to Beijing for an acting career. Edwin started off in smaller supporting roles when he decided to join TVB in 2008, and through the years, viewers have witnessed Edwin slowly climb his way to the top, eventually to leadings status.

Like Ruco, Edwin has also showed versatility in his acting over the years. He has done serious roles, villainous roles, and comedic roles. Netizens also praised Edwin’s voices and looks, calling him a well-rounded artiste.

Vincent Wong Is Tall and Handsome

Like Edwin, Vincent debuted as a singer but achieved unsatisfying results. He joined TVB in 2008 and caught the viewers’ attention with his performance in the 2010 crime drama Gun Metal Grey <刑警>. He became a hot topic among TV-goers when he received thirteen slaps from Damian Lau (劉松仁) in a scene for the 2012 anniversary drama Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles <名媛望族>. The drama also won Vincent his award for Most Improved Actor at the TVB Anniversary Awards.

Vincent’s first drama as lead, Brick Slaves <樓奴>, is currently the second highest-rated TVB drama of 2015. Netizens say they are looking forward to see Vincent leading in more dramas in the future.

  1. Edwin Siu and Ruco Chan for me. The other two cmi. Acting very stiff, especially Vincent Wong.

  2. Only Ruco has the complete package of looks and skills. Plus he can sing well and he is indeed versatile, able to act convincingly as good guy /villain or in action/ non action roles.

    1. @isay Yes! Only Ruco deserve to be in the list. The rest seems so forced into the list, as tvb have no other options.

      1. @dramadrama…other than ruco, the other 3 cannot make it. Edwin not convincing. Vincent in that prison/slave builder dramas too stiff.

    2. @isay: Totally agree with you. Ruco is the total package – great acting, talented (can sing as well), versatile, sporty, good-looking, humble, genuine, great personality. He can convincingly act any role thrown upon him…be it cop, villain, professional, gangster. This guy can do no wrong in my eyes 🙂

  3. Ruco, yes. Vincent, yes. Tony, maybe. Edwin? Pls no!! He is a terribly OTT actor.

No point in actors if the actresses are inadequate.

    1. “Edwin has also showed versatility in his acting over the years. He has done serious roles, villainous roles, and comedic roles. Netizens also praised Edwin’s voices and looks, calling him a well-rounded artiste.”

I wonder what versatility. He can stand there naked and I still don’t see him. I don’t notice him.

  4. Ruco: agree hands down!
Tony: it’s too early to tell. What’s so unique about his look? o_O???
Edwin: he doesn’t have the diversity acting as Ruco. He just so happen to be given diversified roles/characters. However, his actings are the same.
Vincent: he does seem promising. I’ve enjoyed his acting thus far even though he did sound like just reciting/reading his lines from time to time.

If these four are based on how much TVB is promoting them, then yes, these four have been heavily promoted with their own lead series and stuff; well except for Ruco who seems to be in co-lead series mostly. However if it’s based on acting merits, only Ruco deserves the “new great leading actor.” There are other actors who shows as much if not more promises than the other 3 like Matthew Yeung and Louis Cheung.

Thank goodness that they finally dropped Him Law lol.

    1. @jjwong
i agree that matt and louis can both act. matt’s got the looks too and louis is needs more experience in his good guy role but is in general a good actor. i am surprised that tvb hasn’t promoted him law as much since he’s got the looks. also stephen wong is worth promoting.

  5. ruco is the ok here, the other 3 is a not to me. tvb seriously needs to search for a new generation young talented actors with character. for my part they should set up a platform to recruit and lead up new actors, with tutors like king sir who have a sense for young talent. tvb should aiming for actors with the level of chow yun fat, tony leung, gallen lo,that must be the standard if they want to go back to their glory days. from this generation actors only ruco has a package that can cope with the actors of old days.

  6. I have yet to see what is all the buzz on Ruco. By the way, am i the only here thinking that Ruco ISNT good looking?

I liked Edwin Siu in Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei but I have yet to see his other dramas. Vincent and Tony are complete strangers to me.

      1. @happybi i know and i understand he’s good looking in other people’s eye, im not going to call him “ugly” i just dont find him to have that “looks” that a lot of people says he has…hence why i havent watched anything he starrred in :O

      2. @akinu: Please watch Ruco’s old dramas The Other Truth and Brother’s Keeper….then you will know why we say Ruco’s good-looking and why his fans are obsessed with him. But there again, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Ruco’s fans obsession with him lie not just in his looks, but also his great acting skills/talent and his genuine, great personality as well.

      3. @lml1977 i can see that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, many actors have won me over for not their looks but for their acting skills (idc who disagrees with me but the actor Han Dong is a prime example of someone i dont consider good-looking but a good actor). when i have time, i’ll try to watch a drama of his to see all the buzz on him. if i ever, i’ll have my own opinions on him.

      4. @akinu: Start with The Other Truth first. This was the drama that truly launched Ruco’s career in TVB. My other fave dramas of Ruco are Ruse of Engagment (ROE) and Brother’s Keeper (BK). He portrayed very different characters in every drama and he is so damn good. Ok, maybe ROE and BK are a little similar as he played a cop in both. But you can clearly differentiate that they are 2 different characters. Then catch the light-hearted ones like Outbound Love and No Good Either Way. You won’t regret spending time watching them…

      5. @lml1977 TOT launched Ruco into the male lead category but his screen time isnt that much. Some eps we don’t even see him. The role actually tailor made for him is ROE and this is his second lead role after TOT. His acting and action scenes leaves you longing for more of him. The only thing I hated was the ending. It left me with a heavy heart for days much like how ep 22 in COD made me feel heart broken for him.

      6. @isay: My fave is TOT and ROE. He was so charismatic in TOT as Keith Lau. There were many viewers who asked TVB to make TOT2 but obviously has fallen on deaf ears. But I’m still praying hard that TOT2 will happen. TVB hasn’t produced a good law/legal drama in years. And I have to say ROE is my all-time fave. I was totally smitten by his Carson role in ROE. This guy can do no wrong!!

      7. @lml1977 And I’m praying that TOT2 will not happen. I agree with whoever who stand firm in not making TOT2. Sequels are usually disappointing. Why ruin a good thing?

      8. @kidd I was and still hoping for TOT 2, as a direct sequel and more on cases and less on the relationships. TOT has the makings of a good american like sitcoms based on seasons. The only reason it is not happening is because they can’t think of good stories to make it. If that is the case I’d rather TVB don’t touch it. If TVB intends to touch it, it has to be a different sort of approach.

      9. @lml1977 Avoid BK. Avoid Outbound Love.

Go for ROE for action, Reality Check for performance and ok, Outbound Love for the fact that he looks really good. But avoid if possible. The Other Truth is good but he was still raw there. Do not watch, ever that other Linda Chung collaboration, that man chor series.

      10. @funnlim I’m sorry but i will have to respectfully say the same thing to you that you said to freedalas ie speak for yourself. Many of us love BK for Sam and OL for Luk Kung Zi. Ruco himself found the LKZ role something different for him. As for Atibis the story focused on Linda; nevertheless he tried his best.

      11. @isay Which is why Ruco is not bigger than he should be. All 3 series named either feature a weaker female co star or a story that is so weak. All 3 have weak stories, all 3 have weak co stars and all 3 features heavily on the female lead actress. Ruco is a good actor so he excels his given role but he is not the only actor in the series so he is dragged down. Outbound Love would have worked better if it had a tighter story and a more charismatic likable female character. ATISBIS is just weak, in part due to Linda but mostly the writing was horrendous and Ruco was reduced to being a bystander. Brother’s Keeper had promise but in the end it was destroyed by some seriously badly written characters and it touched and go concept. All these 3 are ultimately bad series, ATISBIS being the worst, OL more tolerable but in all 3 Ruco shines for obvious reasons. But all 3 does not showcase his capabilities to the fullest.

ROE will always be my guilty pleasure. As for COD, this is clearly a Ruco show. The rest are there to accompany him, for once and I am happy for Ruco. He now must headline a dynasty fighting series because he can lead it. Throw away love stories. And even then COD disappoints me for wanting to be everything. If not for Ruco and his Man Ho, I would have switched off the TV, and the exact moment when there’s some wuxia element. It is just rubbish. Thank you to Ruco and Joel. But again dragged down by a poor story and poor costars.

Ruco needs Wayne and Roger’s current acting career. He should be given that chance. He can do it. I know his fans will defend all his works but some of his series are just poor and it is not his problem. But poor is poor. No excuse.

      12. @funnlim Again i have to ask you to speak for yourself cos there are many who enjoyed the mentioned series despite the flaws. Personally I don’t like Aimee’s acting but I enjoyed OL for Ruco’s acting. As for BK, he shines as Sam and we just enjoy his acting, say what you want about the script which incidentally I don’t have much of an issue with (except that I didn’t like the Macau parts of the story). I agree that ATIBIS is the worst and that’s becos Ruco doesn’t have a meaty role in it….so you can see how he salvaged the other dramas just by his presence. Same for COD. If not for Ruco, i wouldn’t watch it. Anyways tell me which TVB series these days don’t suck. Even the much hyped Line Walker sucked and I can’t get past the first few episodes even.

      13. @funnlim: ROE is my guilty pleasure too!!! And I have been obsessed with him ever since. This Carson role was tailor-made for him and he totally pulled it off effortlessly. But nonetheless, he also shined in the other roles in BK, OL and even ATIBIS, though his screen time was limited. In the dramas where scripts/storyline was poor and where his co-stars were weak, I am thankful that there is Ruco who was always the saving grace. Hence I never missed any of Ruco’s drama’s regardless of how crappy the storyline pens out and how weak his co-stars are. As an ardent fan, I will support him unconditionally….esp when he’s such a hardworking, talented and genuine nice guy.

      14. @funnlim: And I am so loving him as Man Ho in COD. I skipped all the pirates scenes and watched only Ruco and the palace scenes. But as the story unfolds, it is yet another weak storyline. But Ruco still never disappoints and he deserves a standing ovation for his performance in COD. Frankly, even Grace acts better when she’s opposite Ruco. He has such powerful drawing power that he can influence his co-stars. I truly hope he will get rewarded and recognized for his great acting talent at all the awards ceremonies this year end.

      15. @lml1977 thanks for the suggestions, will watch when i have time to binge watch dramas so that i will understand the rave on ruco

  7. Hmm.  For me, the biggest things I look for in a truly good lead actor are versatility and charisma — out of those 4, the only one who fits the bill is Ruco.  Ruco has already proven that he is absolutely versatile and there is no doubt that he has charisma and the ability to lead a series on his own.  Even though TVB mostly only gives him co-leading roles, most of the time, I only notice Ruco’s performance and not the other leading actor’s – the non-deliberate way in which he is able to consistently outshine his co-stars in most of the series he’s in shows how much talent he has. While I wouldn’t necessarily call Ruco “great” right now, he is definitely getting there.

As for the others…well, first of all, Tony Hung doesn’t even come close – in fact, he’s not even on the same level.  I mean, those netizens’ reasoning for choosing him doesn’t even make sense….”unique looks” = “great actor”????  REALLY??  And I seriously want to know which netizen made the comment that Tony “is capable of carrying a drama on his own”….honestly, even some of the so-called ‘great’ or ‘popular’ siusangs from the previous decade still aren’t capable of carrying a drama on their own, so what makes people think that Tony, whose acting is still ‘newbie’ level, can carry a drama on his own?

I also disagree on Edwin.  Like a few others have commented, I actually don’t ‘notice’ him much either when watching drama series that he is in.  While I will give him credit for being somewhat versatile (though not as versatile as Ruco), he unfortunately has zero charisma (meaning I wouldn’t turn on the TV because of him), which makes it difficult for him to truly be successful as a lead.

Lastly, about Vincent – he definitely has potential, but he still has a long way to go to get to “great leading actor” level.  His acting, while greatly improved from when he debuted, is still not where it needs to be – he needs to hone his acting more so it comes across more natural rather than rehearsed.  From a versatility and charisma perspective though, he’s definitely got inklings of both, it’s just a matter of whether he will utilize both attributes to his advantage.  Oh and one word of caution (more for TVB, since they are the ones who control his career):  please stop going the ‘gimmick’ route (seems like all we hear nowadays with Vincent is how well he endures slaps from his co-stars)….with someone who has acting potential, the focus should be on honing / refining those acting skills, not relying on ‘gimmicks’ to get attention.

    1. @happybi Agreee that RW is a better actor than 3 of these 4. They’re probably cutting him back and don’t want to invest too much due to his illness.

Then again, this is just the Netizen’s “wishlist” sort of speak. So who knows what TVB has in store.

  8. Tony Hung is so overrated and Edwin’s acting is always too exaggerated. Vincent is nice to look at but only one that can act is Ruco.

Matt Yeung has potential, TVB should give him more opportunities.

  9. TVB’s standard had been going down the drain in the few past years. Never did I ever imagine these “netizens” taste had gone down the drain as well.

Other than Ruco, those 3 can’t even carry a drama on themselves not to mention not even any near to the standard “great actor”. Ruco’s acting had already improved greatly if you were to watch his performance in Chor Lau Heung (2001) to My Date With A Vampire III(2004). Those were the result of at least 10 years of hardwork just like any other big stars in the past TVB had and definitely not something these keh leh feh so called leading actor+ actress nowadays can archieve.

  10. I just saw the news that Power Chan is leaving TVB too – he wrote a long letter to TVB on his Weibo, expressing his gratitude to everyone who supported him all these years and also explained his reason for leaving.  I’m saddened that another one of my favorites is leaving, but especially so because Power is one of the few versatile, charismatic, and talented actors that TVB had left.  Even less incentive for me to watch TVB now….

      1. @krolxl In short:  lack of opportunity.  Power is actually in Taiwan right now with the rest of the cast for the stage play Tuesdays with Morrie (he was in Canada earlier so I’m assuming he and King Sir are doing a world tour of their stage play).  From the letter Power wrote, it sounds like he had made the decision to leave while on tour, as he had some time in between performing to really reflect on his career and his position within the company – he deliberately didn’t let any of his friends or colleagues know because he didn’t want them to try and talk him out of leaving.   He said he hasn’t made a decision on what he is going to do after leaving TVB, but he is sure there will be a place for him where it is needed.  His letter was actually quite touching and very positive – didn’t criticize or bash TVB at all and instead expressed gratitude to the company and his colleagues for supporting him all these years (and also asked for his colleagues’ forgiveness for leaving without telling them)….made me even more sad after reading it.

      2. @krolxl
Sad to see him leave. Some actors I don’t understand why TVB never promoted. Another one is Derek Kwok. I was sad to see him leave. He was good looking, can act, and even can fight but TVB just never promoted.

  11. I think Vincent is good enough though …and I agree that that Matt yeung deserves more chances

  12. tony really…. i guess im (very) slowly warming up to him but, when he acts angry…its bad lol his comedic side is okay though

  13. I really really like Tony Hung, and like to see him in more series. But, I don’t think he has reached big 4 status yet. He has only lead in one series and even that one, he’s only co-lead and the one standing in the middle and the most in front in the COD poster is Ruco Chan. Even TVB don’t have confidence to put him in front yet eventhough the series Chinese title is ‘Cheung Po Chai’. How can he be big brother yet?

If netizens think a newbie (still newbie in the acting department) like Tony can be big 4, there really is a severe lack of actors in TVB.

  14. i’m so happy Ruco has made the list…it’s a pity tvb doesn’t know how to look after its artistes. promising ones are leaving.

  15. Ruco definitely deserves to be in this list. Hopes TVB really treasures and promotes him to the extent that his success can equate to Louis Koo ‘s or at least Wong Cho Lam’s and Hawick Law’s level.

    1. @looooooooooo MC, RK, KC are new?! I think even RC shouldn’t be in the new four…

New 4: Edwin, Louise, Vincent, Tony
Present 4: Roger, Wayne, Kenneth, Ruco
Old 4: Steven, Moses, Joe, Kevin
Moses is the only one left behind from the old 4, even Raymond n Bosco considered left tvb.

      1. @genxx11 moses, roger & wayne should be out to give the younger ones a chance…but so far only ruco shows promise. Kenneth ma cannot make it. kevin cheng is still ok.

  16. I personally felt that besides Ruco, the rest are so so . Tony hung is still not a lead material in my own opinion (somehow I was wondering how he was spotted by TVB mgt to cast as main lead in CPT)while I don’t really fancy Edwin acting. As for Vincent, after watching Brick Slaves, he was actually not bad though he is not v charismatic as Ruco Chan.
Back to Ruco , I personally felt that he was a very versatile and good actor since I watched the drama back then in 2010 “every move u make” where the lead are Bowie and Bosco. At that time Ruco was juz a 2nd or 3rd line actor and cast as “ah hoi” I was wondering based on his look and acting, he shd be at least given a 2nd lead. Thereafter he was always appeared in small role until his breakthrough in “other truth”. He proved to the audiences that he can act and is a lead material. He was crowned best TVB actor in StarHub 2014 award. In my opinion, Ruco is much better than Chen Hao and Kenneth Ma but juz that somehow or other, TVB juz did not heavily promoted him . Even though he was cast in the anniversary CPT drama, still he was a co lead. I was thinking that if TVB will to heavily promote him and cast him as main lead in big production as what they have done to Wayne Lai and Raymond lam, Ruco will definitely shine and live up to expectation . In no time, he shd be able to crown as TVB King which I personally felt that he deserves it.

    1. @thpk: To me, Ruco totally deserves the TVB King award back then as Sam in Brother’s Keeper. But lady luck has not always been on his side and I somehow feel that TVB takes him for granted as his has a long management contract with them. He is not as highly valued by TVB as Wayne, Roger, Moses etc just to name a few. In terms of acting, he is on par with Wayne, Roger and I dare says Ruco is so much more versatile as he is young, agile and still capable of pulling action roles !!

      1. @lml1977 Ruco is a hardworking and good actor. I’ve always liked him in his various roles but Man Ho has to be my fave. I think he gave his all in this drama. Unfortunately, he lacks that luck factor and of cos a strong backer unlike some others. Everything which this low profile artiste has today is the result of pure hard work (not handed to him on a silver platter), that is why fans often feel protective of him. Hope he gets his due recognition for his role in COD this year.

      2. @isay: Totally agree with you. Everything Ruco has achieved today is pure hardwork and his perseverance. When he returned to TVB in 2008, he was given many small roles and often villainous ones as well. But he never complained and still outshone even the main leads in some of these small roles. Back in ATV, he was already leading status but he still took on the small roles without complaining. I’m thankful to producer Amy Wong who gave him his breakout role as Keith Lau in The Other Truth that catapulted his career in TVB as a leading man. I truly enjoyed every single performance of Ruco, but my fave is Carson (Ruse Of Engagement) and Man Ho. He gives his all in every single performance, even in small roles. And yes, I fully understand why his fans are so protective of him (sometimes I am guilty of this too), coz we often feel he is not fairly treated. And he is such a low key and humble person that his fans tend to be overly protective and hence may come across as over-the-top. And I must say that his fan base may not be as huge as others, but they sure are a super loyal bunch. Nonetheless, I will support him unconditionally and pray that he gets his due recognition and his career will soar to greater heights.

  17. Frankly speaking, if Ruco Chan is not with TVB, I would likely stop watching TVB drama. The reason why I continue to watch TVB drama is coz of Ruco . Since becoming lead role in “other truth” in 2010, I began to support him in almost every drama that he appeared, but still felt that TVB is still v reluctant to cast him as main lead in Big production . Actors such as Louis Cheung and the current Tony hung who in my humble opinion, are just average though I am quite impressed with Louis’s acting in Momentary of Lapse, still it seems that TVB are quite generous with them by heavily promoting them. However , it seems not the case for Ruco whom I feel that he worked v hard through his way up but was not heavily promoted by TVB.TVB might lose more viewers(those that support him)if they do not start to give him main lead in big production.Have TVB forget that we viewers are the “customers”?? Cannot understand what is TVB thought nowadays. seems like they promote those to lead roles who are either not lead material or are still too green to be cast as lead.!! Example Eliza Sam or even Tracy Chu is a much better choice than Grace Chan in COD!!!

    1. @thpk Same here. To me, only Ruco is an eye-candy and makes me continue watching such drama with rubbish co-stars and contradictory scripts. Shame on the producer of this drama that he should be responsible for coordinating the pirate story and prince story; now it seems like two stories, one of kindergarten level and one of university level. I feel like being fed with a taste of sugar and a taste feces. Tony is totally a miscast and Grace is a nuisance such that Kelly though not good but comparably acceptable (I have already lowered my standard substantially). Among the four, only Ruco can act. It’s painful to watch but I have to support Ruco. If one day Ruco leaves TVB, then I will stop watching TVB and don’t bloody care this media. It astonished me that the producer said that he had planned the filming ten years ago.

      1. @groundhog Tony had been v lucky to get lead role one after another. Agree that he is totally a miscast in COD.I can imagine that Ruco would excel if he is given the role of CPT. With his versatile acting and look, he would fare much better as a CPT than Tony Hung anytime.

      2. @groundhog ruco chan is definitely eye candy. if not for him, CPT is definitely gone case. grace is a nuisance, given that she screams at slightest thing. ram chiang is ok. pirates look more like kids from kindergarten because they don’t even have that fearsome look.

      3. @janet72: Ruco is both eye candy and ear candy. He sings pretty well and how he enuniciate his words in this COD makes him such a joy to watch and hear. I do agree that if not for Ruco and the rest of the palace actors, this COD would have been a major flop. Ruco is the saving grace for this drama…just like Outbound Love. There are tons of viewers who tune in to watch COD and Outbound Love just for Ruco.

      4. @lml1977 Yes, definitely Ruco baby is also ear candy. I remembered when I first listened this man on TV, I wondered why there was suddenly such an actor that I did not know before but with quite good acting skill and very clear and sensational voice and pronunciation. At that time, I thought he must be a DJ from Radio Broadcast like Cheng Tse Sing, Tim. That drama is Grace under Fire (女拳).

    2. @thpk: Actually, there are many people like you out there who are still watching TVB dramas because of Ruco. I only watched 2 dramas this year…Eye in the Sky and Captain of Destiny. This Ruco is like drugs…super addictive. I would rather watch his old dramas (which I have done so many many times) than to watch the new dramas by others. He is the only reason why I’m watching TVB dramas. I just love everything that he does. He can do no wrong in my eyes !!!

      1. @lml1977 TVB seriously, TVB is lacking siu sangs who can draw viewers . If Ruco is not cast in COD, I will not watch the drama altogether.
        My view.
Raymond Lam- ok but left TVB
        Moses chan- overrated
        Raymond Wong-too stiff in acting
        Bosco Wong-so so
Wayne Lai- not bad , good in acting
        Kevin Cheng-ok
        Kenneth Ma- average

Seems like only Ruco Chan live up to expectation but lack real opportunity to cast in big production .

  18. Actually, Ruco should not be termed as “new”. He has already achieved leading status since airing of The Other Truth in 2011. He will continue to be 1 of TVB’s leading man for many years as he has alot of fan support and is widely praised for his greating acting skills. I only wish that TVB will truly treasure him and give him good roles in big production and act alongside actors of his calibre. In the many dramas that he has lead or co-lead, he is always cast alongside newbies whom TVB wants to promote. TVB knows his drawing power and hence seems to use him to promote the lesser known ones. And he is usually in small production. By far, this Captain of Destiny is his biggest production to date. But his co-stars and storyline is quite a letdown. Ruco and a few others (Joel Chan, Ngor Hua, Li Seng Cheong) are the ones holding up this drama in my opinion. Even Ram Chiang’s talent is wasted in the pirates scenes…too nonsensical.

  19. The power of a good role.

Ruco has been a good actor for a long time, but, it takes ‘The Other Truth’ for most people to notice it. It takes ‘The Other Truth’ to make people see his good looks, charisma, acting capability. Before that, when I mention Ruco, most people (besides the fans who followed him from ATV) will just say he looks evil.

Ruco really has to thank whoever who cast him as Keith in TOT.

I wonder if Eric Li will ever have this chance. He’s always casted in villainous roles most probably due to his look.

    1. @kidd: This is why I am truly grateful to Amy Wong for casting Ruco as the charismatic, so-damn-good-looking-and-delicious Keith Lau in The Other Truth. He is hot hot hot in The Other Truth. But he is even hotter than before now…he gets better and better with age. I only wished he is cast with better scripts and co-stars. Regardless of who his co-stars are, he will always shine in any role given to him.

  20. Actually it’s only a suggestion of one netizen for this name list in a forum. Don’t know why the media took it for granted. Ruco should be levels higher than the rest 3 in all aspects.
Wonder if it’s the arrangement of tbb to level up the 3 others due to shortage of siu sangs. But this is unfair to Ruco.

  21. ruco was convincing as a villain in Eye in the Sky…those blood shot eyes were so scary. how he turned from angel to devil.
as bowie in CPT, I love that artist in him. as 11th prince, I love how heroic and righteous…how he saved the girls. so romantic.

  22. One can tell that TVB’s standard really dropped nowadays.
Doesn’t their anniversary drama suppose to be entertaining ?But. is nothing to shout about and in fact, the script seems to be poorly written:
After Grace Chan travelled back to Qing Dynasty, her mini iPad or tablet or whatever it is called will nvr flat! Secondly, she must be super smart and strong, able to climb the cliff and destroyedthe western cannon in Ruco navy camp. Thirdly, she muz be bringing along with her the google map, lol, able to find her way in this Qing Dynasty era with much ease, forever nvr lost her way!! Wat a joke! Last but not least, obviously not only is fadan lacking in TVB, it is the same for siu sang, of so many actors, after Bosco cannot make it and Raymond Wong back out due to illness, they pick Tony Hung who is a miscast. Anyone who does not know his role in COD might think that he is jus a calafair , not offended to those who support him , but after watching so many TVB dramas, this guy is definitely not a lead material. So who is his backer in TVB?
