Angelababy is One of the First Asians to Cover America’s “Vogue”

Angelababy is one of the first Asian stars to be on the cover of the American Vogue.

The other Asian star sharing the spotlight with Angelababy is South Korean actress Doona Bae.

The April edition of Vogue Magazine, which comprises of two different covers featuring a total of seven actresses, focuses on the theme of “global talent.” Other stars covering that month include American actress Scarlett Johansson, Australian actress Elizabeth Debecki, Indian actress Deepika Padukone, French actress Lea Seydoux, and Nigerian actress Adesua Etomi.

It is the first time in 127 years of American Vogue’s history to feature that many talents for one edition.

While this is a great achievement for Angelababy, many Chinese netizens are questioning the 30-year-old’s qualifications to be on the cover.

Netizens explained that compared to other actresses on the cover, Angelababy does not have a representative work in film. While Scarlett Johansson’s credits include Black Widow from The Avengers film franchise and Doona Bae has multiple Best Actress wins, Angelababy’s representative work is Keep Running <奔跑吧兄弟>, a variety show. Foreign media also likes to dub Angelababy as “the Chinese Kim Kardashian.”

“She’s not a suitable actress to represent China,” said netizens.

Angelababy is the first Chinese star to be on the cover of Vogue, but not the first to be featured. In 2005, Gong Li (巩俐) and Zhang Ziyi’s (章子怡) interviews for Memoirs of a Geisha were published in the December 2005 edition of Vogue.

  1. I have to agree they shouldn’t have pick ABB. The article also should have included the bit where vogue messed it up and have Tiffany Tang picture instead of ABB lol, or how she used the same concept as she did for vogue (Asian/Chinese?).

But apart from Gong Li, Sun Li, Zhang Ziyi (I think too old, this group seems to be in their 30s), I can’t think of anyone that is model pretty with great acting skill :/ Dilireba is model pretty but her acting is ok only, and obviously not as famous as ABB. So while ABB don’t seem to be the right choice, it’s hard to come up with another choice lol

    1. @littlefish
I have to agree with you…Both AB and Dilireba are great in modeling even though their acting are just so so….But so are most of the Mainland actresses right now…. I can’t think of anyone that’s more qualified than AB…LOL…

      1. @jimmyszeto I feel Nini will be a great choice too. She is really one of the most talented stars today.

      2. @snoopy then I would pick Sun Li lol! I thought she was older xD but yea, since she’s in her 30s, which I’m sure all these women are, she’s the best candidate for China!

However, I think ABB got selected here because apart from the Indian girl, all of them feature in a Hollywood blockbuster (at least most of them I’ve seen in a big movie). But yea, if going by pure talents, should be Sun Li hand down!

      3. @hohliu recently I just read an article saying how NiNi is so talented, and beautiful and has zero recognition in hk lol. So as much as I agree with you that she’s beautiful and talented, she isn’t as popular as YM or crystal Liu.

      4. @littlefish I would pick any of the Chinese artists mentioned in this thread.
“Asians don’t raisin”, any of them would look like they’re in the same age group as the other actresses

  2. Just ew. Idk how it’s possible ABB is so popular. Her acting is known to suck and her face is only so-so to me. Well, then again, they chose Crystal Liu for Mulan…so there’s that.

  3. “The other Asian star sharing the spotlight with Angelababy is South Korean actress Doona Bae.”

How about “Indian actress Deepika Padukone”? Isn’t India in Asia???

    1. @niangniang they are Asian as well, however, I think they were talking about east Asia, India is west Asia, and indian gene is more middle eastern (i.e more European mix than Asian Asian lol). So yea, they didn’t clarify clearly enough

    2. @niangniang In America, when people say Asian, they are referring to East Asian. In Europe, when people say Asian, they are referring to West Asian. Confusing isn’t it.

    1. @snowy in the article I read, it mentioned Liu Wen and another Chinese model have graced the US Vogue. So I think the distinction here is Asian stars that make it in Asia first, and that isn’t purely models. Those two Chinese models are first well known in the international stage rather than their hometown (I could be wrong) but they exploded in the international runway (VS angels). Whereas these “stars” are mainly actresses (multi-talents rather than just being purely models), who dominated their hometown then spread to the US.

  4. I also think Crystal Liu (or Liu Yifei) is a better choice . She is young and prettier than Angelababy. Liu possesses the same qualifications – modelling, acting and singing. She has filmed international movies and drama series.

My second choice Yang Mi. She is also pretty, and is around the same age.

Both of them can represent Asia on the cover of the American Vogue.

      1. @orchid123
i thought she looks dull and lifeless. i wonder if a western make-up artist did her b/c normally her photos look stunning.

  5. Why does evr1 has to have critism on her. Why we can we be kind And gave her Some cheer up And praise to be on the cover on Vogue?

    Why always So negative?
Maybe there are suitable ladies, But vogue will not choose Some random girl on the cover.

Angelababy has her own charisma, otherwise she cant be able to stand for so long in the showbusiness.

Like Those varierty shows. She and Xiao Ming are perfect match!!

    Good job ABB!!

  6. One strike against her is a dumb name like angelababy. wouldn’t doubt many people outside china thinks she a porn actress.
