Netizens Have Gripes About TVB’s New Idol Drama “Wife Interrupted”

It’s been a while since TVB last produced a youthful idol drama, the last being the Hearts of Fencing <四葉草> franchise. Wife Interrupted <救妻同學會>—starring Hubert Wu (胡鴻鈞), Moon Lau (劉佩玥), Ashley Chu (朱智賢), and Alvin Ng (伍富橋)—is TVB’s latest attempt, and netizens haven’t been exactly impressed.

Wife Interrupted, which tells the story of a mysterious disappearance, stars Hubert Wu as the hard-working millennial Cyrus who gets kidnapped while he was going Christmas shopping. After waking up and escaping, he discovers that his wife Jill (Moon Lau) was also kidnapped. Cyrus is threatened to turn in HK$100 million to exchange for his wife’s life, but CCB officer Sun Leung (Alvin Ng) arrests him, believing him to be the true suspect. He manages to escape prison, but while on the run, Cyrus discovers that the true suspect may be someone close to home.

Alvin Ng as Sun

Wife Interrupted aired on Sunday to much fanfare and anticipation, but after the broadcast of the first episode, netizens rushed to discussion boards to express their disappointment. Marketed as an idol drama, the cast of Wife Interrupted consists of fresh new faces, but netizens pointed out that a majority of the main cast were born in the 80’s, with an average age of over 28.

Netizens also pointed out at the rawness and unpreparedness of Alvin Ng as the second male lead. The award-winning rookie singer was the replacement of Dickson Yu (余德丞), who had to drop out of the role due to health concerns. Wife Interrupted is Alvin’s first television drama, and his lack of training in acting showed through his wooden performance.

Ashley Chu as Milan

Another criticism that netizens have for Wife Interrupted is the confusing storytelling. The show unwinds its plot through both flashbacks and present day events, and the constant switch in the timeline makes it confusing and hard to follow.

Fortunately, not all is bad. 32-year-old Ashley Chu is earning praises for her sophisticated performance as Cyrus’ old classmate Milan, with netizens calling her the show’s “saving grace.” Rookie actor Telford Wong (黃庭鋒) is also earning positive reviews for his performance as Gino.

  1. i have mixed feelings about tvb idol dramas too. idol drama in other countries, the actors/actresses are much younger but in tvb, they always a twenty something playing a high school student and a 30 year old playing lead in idol drama isn’t really going to cut it that well.

  2. telford wong can become the new raymond lam if tvb promote him. he looks full of positive energy, has a handsome friendly easy to accept face thats rarely seen from a tvb rookie since the last decade.

  3. How can Moon and Hubert be leads for idol drama? They’re old and not even attractive! TVB only give opportunities to young people that come from a rich family to back them up. Or they give you an opportunity if you’ve been working hard for 10+ years and they like you….
