Raymond Lam Defends Controversy Over Double Awards

Moses Chan Ho was originally the front-runner to win the My Favorite Male Character Award at the 2010 TVB Anniversary Awards Ceremony. Raymond Lam Fung surprisingly won the award instead, while snagging the TVB.com Popularity Award as well.

Prior to the announcement of the My Favorite Male Character award results, Raymond had already indicated that he had confidence in winning the award. He also indicated that after the awards ceremony, he will be holding a celebration party. After winning the award, reporters asked whether Raymond will call TVB Deputy Chairmain, Mona Fong, to thank her for personal note expressing her support earlier? Raymond indicated that the night before, he had already sent Ms. Fong an autographed DVD of his recent concert.

Was Raymond concerned that his awards at the TVB Anniversary will spur controversy? Raymond replied, “Since entering the industry, I have heard many difference voices. The most important thing is to do my own job well and be responsible to the audience.”

After the awards ceremony, Raymond celebrated with over fifty fans that were waiting for him outside TVB City . The fans brought champagne and gifts to celebrate Raymond’s upcoming December 8th birthday. The scene was very lively and Raymond revealed that his birthday wishes were a successful career and more time spent with family, especially his grandmother.

Excerpt from Appledaily

Jayne: Although Raymond Lam is definitely one of TVB’s hottest young stars, I was surprised that he received the Most Favorite Male Character Award. TVB’s decision to give the award to Raymond shows their obvious preference in giving Raymond’s career an extra push. I do believe that they sacrificed Moses Chan this year in order to make Raymond Lam shine more.

  1. i like raymond, but i dont think he should have won fav male. kingsley was terribly boring in MOL. it’s not the guy that i would want LOL. but also, i hated moses in CBML. kenneth should have won it for AFOS. he was so much more memorable.

  2. I was surprised too since I expected Moses but again I don’t doubt the results. Raymond is way more famous than Moses so we are talking fave character here and even if I kept muttering “watch the Japanese version instead”, I believe his win is no coincidence. Fans just love him. I wouldn’t take that away from Raymond. Maybe all should realise Moses isn’t that level yet.

  3. I think Raymond is in a very enviable position where he is well liked/ loved by women of all ages, young teens to old grandmas. Moses attracts a somewhat older crowd.

Raymond is indeed a shining star…

Hannah, although you may find Kingsley boring, I actually found his nerdy professor character very attractive. I am attracted to brainy men, although dating a man such as Kingsley in real life is another matter. 🙂

  4. it was going to be hard for kenneth ma to win. he had to beat out wayne lai also in this category.

what was mona fong’s 12 character msg to ray? i keep reading articles making reference to it.

  5. glad that other agreed that Raymond totally did not deserve that award for most favorite male character! Notice it’s most favorite male character and note more favorite male actor! They should’ve given it to Steven Ma or Kenneth Ma! Their characters were far more likable! There’s no doubt that Raymond’s acting has been quite stereotyped and downhill these few years. Really don’t Ron nor Raymond’s acting. Giving him the award is just TVB showing they favor him. =/

  6. Raymond lam won most favourite male character cos to many, myself included, he was definitely remembered by the role he played, professor king.
I don’t think the rest of the nominees deserved it more than him cos after watching their series, I don’t really recall the names of their roles. Whereas, for Ray, many remember him as Kingsley king or professor king. It’s definitely my favourite male character!!

  7. Mona Fong to Raymond

“Congrats my dearest boy. You’ve done us proud. See you tonight, dearie”

    Ha ha!

  8. Lol, if TVB really gives Kenneth Ma the award, then the war will be bigger.

BTW, wat’s so special with Kenneth’s role in AFOS?

  9. @pandamao: It all started when Mona Fong’s cousin Wong Kar Hey who is Production Director got drunk and said they overestimated Raymond’s ability in the movie industry as ‘The Jade and Emerald’ was a flop. Indirectly blaming him for the failure of the box office sales. Mona Fong then sent him 12 words to cover his cousin’s butt which said something to this effect.. Ignore negative influence, move forward and we have confidence in you. Media then twisted this to be top execs giving him favouritism although like I said it was to cover her cousin’s butt.

Raymond who probably have genuine gratitude in his heart towards TVB then responded (could be a silly move) by saying he bleeds TVB’s blood. Media/Eric Tsang and now Liza & 3 Gods have used this to show his sucking up to top management.

  10. I agree with Fiona, out of all the names Professor King was more memorable than the rest. At least in my household. Ha Ha!

  11. Kingsley may be a tad boring but Raymond Lam made him attractive gentleman and being a favourite to many more fans from all ages than Moses’ character. Raymond clearly scored the votings. He deserved the award. So Moses Chan is NOT being robbed here.

Right! Professor King is the most memorable character out of them. I don’t remember the other characters’ names already

Wong Kar Hei is a loser. He didn’t realize that TJATP flopped because of his own script and Joey Yung’s bad acting

  14. I read in a tabloid that Raymond is a relative to Mrs. Christina Lee Look Ngan Kwan, widow of the late Mr. Lee Hsiao Wo (original founder of TVB). Mrs. Lee is currently on the TVB Board of Directors and allegedly it was due to this connection that Raymond was always favored highly by TVB.

That may be the reason why Mona Fong personally wrote a letter to support Raymond, who was criticized by Director Wong. There are many veteran artists who may have higher status, otherwise why would Ms. Fong act so publicly support Raymond?

In addition, I think TVB management made Director Wong Kar Hey (who insulted Raymond) write a handwritten note of apology? Tabloids even published photos of Raymond holding the letter with Virginia Lok.

  15. I wld blame the flop of the jade and the pearl movie on the script. Without Ray it cld hv done worst!

Look at The Perfect Wedding, gd script & Ray= box office ratings.

  16. I love lum fung so much and glad that he won something. It is obvious !!!! People that’s talking about how tvb executives favors him could possibly because he’s from a wealthy background. Look at the difference between ring ng and Raymond lam then u know. Where is tavia yeung???? I want her to win something??? Did she win any last year??? She’s a really good actress.

Kinglsley king is a very cute character. I like the part when king looks at powerful girl whe she was playing tennis and fixing the tire for him. Such a cute series.

  17. I read Raymond is the god son of the lady who always cuts the birthday cake each year. Moreover his father is rich.

  18. I would not be surprised if Raymond does have connections. In fact, I think that is how a lot of people get a job these days as well as get favored and promoted. It’s not to say that Raymond does not work hard because he does, however, connections gives you an extra boost that others just don’t have. And yes, Raymond’s family is rich as well. In fact, he did not even need to join the circle to earn money. I think he did it because he loved to act and sing.

  19. I seriously had no idea Moses was the “front-runner to win the My Favorite Male Character Award” because his character was terrible in CBML. Out of the nominees, Kingsly truly was a great character though I’m also surprised he won cos the series did not get high ratings.

  20. “Raymond has a good life… or he’s just really lucky.”

But a very lonely and unhealthy one. To lose sleep, work non-stop, and fluctuation of weights could not be a good thing for him in the future. If he does not take proper care of himself, it will catch-up with him and no connection or money can buy back his health and youth. He is barely 31 but he seems to have aged a lot in some of the pictures and much much too skinny. He needs to get some rest. And at this age and so handsome, he should at least have a few ex gfs but none at the moment, that he claims. That couldn’t be too normal.

  21. ^Totally agree. I think his life is very hectic and likely very lonely.

Frankly speaking, I didn’t like Ray’s Kingsley character so it wasn’t my favourite male character. I didn’t watch GW and I thought Kenneth was fine in AFOS but not that endearing. My favourite male character this year is actually Vincent Wong’s Carson in GMG but that was an even longer shot than either Steven or Kenneth. I do think that they could have given the award to Steven to make up for passing him for Best Actor yet again. But favourite character is not “best actor” so Raymond’ popularity clearly helped him win – even without TVB’s favouritism.

But what baffles me is people saying Moses should have gotten the award?!!! Kingsley was a boring character, but Moses’ character was tedious AND annoying. In addition, Moses over-acted like CRAZY!

    1. i liked carson, and i think that kenneth ma did absolutely awesome, rather than giving the award 2 someone who didn’t deserve it, cough cough (Raymond lam) as the boring professor, i think tvb should have gave it to kenneth

  22. @Tris.

MOL’s rating was the 3rd highest in this year. Only lost to CBML and NR.

  23. I didn’t watch GMG, so, can’t comment. I voted for Kent Cheng’s Ho Kau in ‘When Lanes Merged’ for the ‘Fave Male Character’ Award.

  24. I definitely think that Raymond is being overpromoted, to the point that he hasn’t been cast in as many memorable roles as before. In my opinion (not saying that this is the same for everyone), his character in ‘Mysteries of Love’ was extremely boring. The last roles that I found Raymond’s acting and character to be memorable are his characters in ‘Master of Tai Chi’ and ‘Heart of Greed’.

I think the same thing happened to Ron Ng and Bosco Wong when they were promoted too much. I prefer quality over quantity even if I am a big fan of the actor/actress.

  25. I also hope that Raymond will get more rest and take better care of himself. However, it is hard with his busy schedule. It is great to be successful and all, but I think health is still more important. Fame and all don’t last forever because once it is gone, it’s gone. Therefore, health is more important since all of fame and fortune cannot buy back your health.

  26. I wonder when Steven Ma will ever win best actor… He can act but TVB doesn’t seem to care 🙂

  27. I watched MOL, AFOS and CMBL and I don’t find how Kenneth and Moses are more deserving. I think Kenneth did ok but hey, Moses overacted terribly.

  28. I only like Raymond in the “heart of greed II” with Linda Chung. He shined in that series. Other he is okay but not great. I don’t think Moses should receive the Award because this year he is terrible in the both of the comedy series (CMBL and Fly with Me) OMG!I cannot believe when I watched the series. I love him in “heart of greed”…

  29. SDS i agree with u it seems that TVB does not put effort to promote him

  30. @ JN – Moses was also terrible in “In The Eye Of The Beholder”. 2010 was a bad, bad year for Moses!

  31. Advo i agree with u too!! not a good yr for moses!! don’t think this years dramas were good enough to beat No regrets!! they were kinda boring/had a boring storyline

  32. yes. moses has quite a no. of dramas this year, but all of them were bad. fly with me, eye of the beholder, can’t buy me love… all of them are CRAP productions. he was ridiculously ott in all of them.

i thought that he was ott enough in HOG. never knew he would be more ott in 2010.

2010 is not a good year for tvb dramas. only a few dramas stood out. AFOS, NR, BKNP, ACOTOB. only these 4 dramas were good enough for me to recommend to my friends.

  33. ^ YESSS! A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK DOES COMEDY RIGHT. IT DESERVES SOME KIND OF AWARD!!! I totally voted for Sunny Chan’s character in ACOTOB to win Favorite Male. His character is annoying but super hilarious. Sad that he didn’t even get into Top 5. -________-

In the Eye of the Beholder and Can’t Buy Me Love are terrible comedies. Gave up watching them the first week because none of the dialogue made me laugh.

And if Favorite Male was an award back in the early 2000s, Raymond Lam should have won it for Eternal Happiness, IMO. Or for A Step Into the Past. Or even better, for Survivor’s Law. Those were the only dramas that I liked him in, lmao.

  34. ^ Yes! I totally voted for Sunny’s character in ACOTOB cuz he was such a good father and HILARIOUS. But sadly TVB doesn’t promote him so there was no way he would’ve been in the Top 5 :[

ACOTOB was probably my fave this year, but I only saw a few series (ACOTOB, CBML, MOL, Don Juan DeMercado, A Watchdog’s Tale, & APCOMII)

  35. I do not doubt that Ray is promoted and/or got his foot in the door at TVB b/c of connections. It’s a well-known fact that he has connections with the higher-ups at TVB. However, he is also one of TVB’s shining stars b/c he does have the ‘whole package’ – he can act, is very handsome, and charismatic… esp. when you compare him to the bunch of TVB young scholars (Ron Ng, Bosco Wong, Sammul Chan, Moses Chan, Kevin Cheng – these all have some components of the package but Ray is closest to having the whole package).

I agree that he is a very lucky guy in this respect. On the dating thing, he has said over and over that he really wants to date, but his schedule simply doesn’t allow it.

  36. I loveeeeee A Chip Off the Old Block too. It is no doubt the best series of the year. It beats all the other dramas that I have watched this year.

Sunny Chan is so funny. I was also surprised by Myolie in this series.

  37. I definitely agree that Sunny Chan should have won my favorite actor for A Chip off the Old Block. He was funny and very likable. I didn’t think Raymond’s character in the Mysteries of Love was memorable at all. Kingsley was boring, one dimensional, and way too polite. If he were real, I would NEVER date him. I do wish Steven Ma won something though… but he didn’t have very many good roles this year. I really liked him in safe guards and a journey called life. He definitely showed his acting chops in those series.

  38. I seriously think that kenneth ma shouldn’ve gotten that award, and i like cvincent wong as carson as well, but Raymond lam is totally not deserving that award.

  39. Raymond Lam is gay. I think Moses or kenneth should have got that award instead of Pro sir. His character was boring and again gay. Raymond Wong got most improved actor!!! LOL

  40. congrat and good job ray, he deserved got it, please dont stop acting and singing.

  41. Raymonds men without shadows backfired and decreased his popularity in fans and tvb. Plus his Mavis pan I’m guessing this year he has a really bad time.
