Sammy Leung Shares Sustainable Weight Loss Secrets

At the age of 45, Sammy Leung (森美) is in his best shape ever. When he was 28 years old, Sammy  weighed 180 pounds and considered himself overweight. After experimenting with various weight loss methods over the last decade, Sammy finally figured out what works and what doesn’t.  Sammy joked, “I get better looking as I age.”

A popular radio personality, Sammy wanted to look better on camera as his television and film appearances increased. For his role in 2017 TVB drama My Ages Apart <跨世代>, he successfully lost over 20 pounds in the span of three months.

Trying various methods in the past, Sammy doesn’t recommend eliminating carbohydrates altogether, as this can have extreme effects on the body. When he went on a low-meat and low-carbohydrate diet, his energy levels crashed and he was always in a bad mood and felt lethargic. “Although I lost weight, I also felt very tired.”

Instead, he has achieved durable weight loss through intermittent fasting. Sammy said, “Intermittent fasting has been around for many years. I first came across this method while watching a BBC documentary on an airplane flight. A Taiwanese doctor once said that breakfast is just a habit–a growing child or teenager may need breakfast, but otherwise it can be skipped.”

Following a daily time-restricted feeding window, Sammy only eats from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Without eating in the late evening hours which is close to bed time, the body’s blood sugar decreases and metabolism increases.

Eating at home also gives Sammy more control over his food intake. Preferring lots of vegetables and fish but less red meat, Sammy usually eats organic chicken and fish salad.  Making conscious choices and portion control are also helpful. “If you like eating barbecue pork and soy sauce chicken, then remove the chicken oil and skin, and only limit yourself to one-fourth of the rice. I guarantee you’ll lose weight in one month.”

Currently weighing 153 pounds, Sammy emphasizes that exercise also needs to be incorporated for successful weight loss. Sammy promises that the rewards are worth the extra effort, “Keeping fit helps me look better, but I’m also more energetic and happier. No other method can give me this type of happiness.”
