Nicky Wu Had to Clear Legal Issues with Ex-wife Before Marrying Cecilia Liu

Registering their marriage last year, Nicky Wu (吳奇隆) and Cecilia Liu (劉詩詩) finally held their wedding banquet in Bali on March 20. Despite the touching vows and the 20 million RMB fairy tale wedding, Nicky and Cecilia’s marriage came with many obstacles, including legal complications involving Nicky’s ex-wife Ma Yashu (馬雅舒).

As it turns out, Nicky and Yashu had not officially registered for marriage in Taiwan. In 2007, the pair was interrogated with scrutiny by the government unit. Angered that they were treated almost like criminals, Nicky decided not to register their marriage in Taiwan.

Because of this, Nicky had to wed Yashu and then file for a divorce before he could legally register his marriage with Cecilia in Taiwan.

Two Sides to a Divorce

Before his career peaked with 2011’s Bu Bu Jing Xin <步步惊心>, Nicky had struggled with his career while still having to repay his father’s 16 million RMB debt. It took 12 years before Nicky was able to pay back the debts completely.

Due to his earlier financial struggles, Nicky did not give overly expensive gifts to Yashu. Nicky’s mother spoke diplomatically kindly of Yashu, “There wasn’t a wedding banquet held at the time. We really didn’t treat her properly.”

However, Nicky’s mother disclosed that Nicky gifted Yashu an apartment and number of assets when they separated.

Shocked at the news, Yashu exclaimed no such thing occurred. Yashu said, “I originally didn’t want to speak on this matter. But on the topic of the apartment, Nicky and I bought it together in Beijing. We both paid for it and when we separated. I gave his share back to him. Right now, I still live in that apartment in Beijing.”

Although no further statements were made, Nicky’s mother said the family is no longer in touch with Yashu – especially not after Nicky’s marriage with Cecilia.

  1. “Nicky did not give overly expensive gifts to Yashu. Nicky’s mother spoke diplomatically kindly of Yashu, “There wasn’t a wedding banquet held at the time. We really didn’t treat her properly.””

So what is there to “speak diplomatically kindly of Yashu” about?
His first wife did NOT get the same lavish treatment, she financially contributed the house he supposedly gifted her.

Ironically in many stories … it’s often the first gfs/wives go through the uphill struggles and sufferings, and the relationship soured too because finances are not rosy and they have to struggle (and maybe fight) … But when the going’s all comfy and good it’s the 2nd one later who will reap all the financial benefits (cases which come to mind: Gallen Lo, Alvin Chau)

    1. @nomad822 Nah. This one used Nicky for her own publicity to advance her acting career until she caught hold of a richer guy. Nicky and his family has actually been quite gentlemanly in handling the matter and not dragged her through the mud with the media regarding her affair. You can actually get sued for having an affair according to Mainland Chinese law and often the outcome is that they walk away with nothing. She is lucky that Nicky didn’t sue her and just wanted a divorce.

I am happy that Yasu and Nicky have parted ways and moved on to find another person that they are happy with. The worst thing is celebrity couples bashing each other to the media for years after a breakup.

  2. She has in fact remarried a billionaire I believe? There were rumours she was having an affair with said guy and he agreed to divorce and part with a whole chunk of his assets. Nicky kept quiet abt it.

    Anyway I am confused;

“As it turns out, Nicky and Yashu had not officially registered for marriage in Taiwan. In 2007, the pair was interrogated with scrutiny by the government unit. Angered that they were treated almost like criminals, Nicky decided not to register their marriage in Taiwan.

So did he or didn’t he marry yashu in Taiwan? If he didn’t why then did he have to marry and divorce yashu to marry cecilia who he met much later and started a relationship AFTER Yashu remarried from what I remember? And why dos he even need to marry>divorce to marry cecilia?

    I am very confused!

    1. @funnlim I meant Yashu had an affair, leading to divorce with nicky. She was hardly the struggling 1st wife. He married her after he became free from debt and he in fact lessened his work load after marriage. Don’t pity her. She is not like Gallen’s 1st wife, etc. She reaped profit her own way.

    2. @funnlim
There are many things in this article that do not seem accurate or make any sense. From what I heard and gathered through the years, they met while filming Xiao Shi Yi Lang in 2001. They dated for years and filed for marriage in 2006. They divorced in 2009. I heard that Nicky was still working a lot due to his father’s debt so was always filming and was away from home a lot. Therefore, she was lonely and met this James dude and had an affair behind Nicky’s back and on top of that I think they quarreled over money and other issues so finally divorced. I guess the timing was just not right for them. Cecilia met Nicky at a better timing so it worked out better for them. Timing is truly important.

I agree that we should not feel bad for her at all. She truly did reap profit with her own methods and did not sacrifice anything like Gallen’s wife or other selfless wives.

      1. @hetieshou Strangely, I had always thought it was a pity that Nicky and Ada’s relationship never survived. They really stood by each other through the hard times with their families debt and through the media coverage when Ada announced that she will not longer pay for her mother and aunt’s gambling debts. Sometimes I think that if they met later after all the problems that they would have a great couple since they are both great and appreciative people.

      2. @elizabeth

I actually have the same thoughts as you. I thought it was a big pity that he and Ada’s relationship did not last. Yes, they both were there for each other through the most difficult time of their life. I heard that Nicky cheated on Ada with his ex wife but not sure how true that is. If so, what a pity and I think Ada and Nicky would have made a great couple since as you said, they are both great and appreciative people who know how to treasure what they have. I guess it just was not meant to be. However, I am happy that they are both happily married now so the past is just the past. Hope their marriages last a lifetime.

      3. @hetieshou I heard that Nicky and Ada split on friendly terms due to the long-term distance relationship. Ada concentrated her career in HK and Nick’s HK career became tame and he shifted his time to Mainland China. Neither of them were really ready to settle down and get married at the time and they still had to keep working hard.

Nicky and Ada both have complicated families and it can be hard for them to deal with both sets of problems. They tried, lasted for 3 years and despite their efforts, they split. Maybe it is is better to have a bit of balance in a relationship. Max and Cecelia are simpler people in comparison and their marriages to be turning out great. I too wish all four of them lots of happiness in their respective marriages.

      4. @elizabeth
Yes,I heard about that too but then kept on hearing that Nicky cheated on Ada which I do not think is the case. But if they are still on good terms then the cheating rumors may less likely be true. Timing just wasn’t right for them.

I am glad they both found good partners and hope they all can have a happy and lasting marriage.

      5. @elizabeth they bonded over parental problems and predicament and he was indeed, working long hrs to,pay off debt hence no time. Wouldn’t it b amazing if Ada was at the wedding?

      6. @funnlim Hmmm. Even though Ada and Nicky may have split amicably, I think it is still an awkward situation when an ex comes to the wedding, unless he/she is a common friend of both bride and groom. They are two people who have truly loved each other and even though both have moved on, they both still have shared memories and experiences that are irreplaceable. It can cause people to gossip and also who knows what the current partners may feel. Chinese paparazzi are always quite cruel and delusion when they make up their headlines. Sometimes it is just better to let things be. =(

      7. @elizabeth
True but it depends because Myolie invited Bosco to her wedding and even her husband was ok with it. It just depends since some are still friends after breaking up. But of course some hate each others’ guts too so it really varies.

      8. @elizabeth ”They really stood by each other through the hard times with their families debt”

Actually, they did not. I read the articles back then and also thought it a pity. Ada felt sad for a long time as it was Nicky who broke off the relationship first, from family pressure etc. He later met Yashu and dated her within such a short time period from their breakoff.

      9. @funnlim
Yes but Nicky was still struggling for a long time when it came to finances and career. Cecilia truly met him at the right time.

    3. @funnlim The original article in Chinese was poorly written in the first place, but the translation in English on this site isn’t accurate either, which is why there is so much confusion.

From what I was able to gather in reading the Chinese version of the article, what happened was that back in 2007, when Nicky was going through the legal process of bringing Yashu into Taiwan (I’m assuming they have some type of visa process that includes filling out paperwork and being interviewed by immigration department, just like many other countries), the government officials who interviewed him gave him a very hard time, basically accusing him of falsifying his marriage and even went so far as to ‘imply’ that his relationship with Yashu was purely ‘financial’ transaction. Nicky got really upset (which of course can’t blame him, as the officials made it sound like they were engaged in some type of prostitution scenario or something…anyone would be upset in that situation) and so decided to drop the whole thing, resulting in him and Yashu not being ‘officially’ registered for marriage in Taiwan. Not sure whether Nicky had filed for divorce from Yashu in Taiwan or Mainland, but if it was Taiwan, could be that’s where the problem was, as he probably had a divorce on file but no previous marriage registered (I’m no lawyer, but I’m assuming that probably won’t add up legally?). The translated version of the article actually adds to the confusion, primarily due to poor word choice….the more appropriate translation of that sentence should be: “Even though they [Nicky and Cecilia] already registered their marriage in Mainland, [Nicky] had to first take care of the legal formalities of marrying and then divorcing Ma Yashu in Taiwan before he could marry Cecilia.” A little bit more clear, though without an understanding of how the marriage laws work in Taiwan, probably still won’t make as much sense as we would like….

  3. This is ridiculous. How is he going to marry his ex-wife & divorce her again when she is already married to that Australian guy? Since they were married & divorced in China – why can’t the Taiwanese’s government consider everything is clear? This poor guy – things are never easy for him.

This video Ma YaShu talked about the big wedding ring that NW gave to her:
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V_4uQlUCyOc

Watch this video of Ma YaShu & her new husband when she married the guy. I can’t stand her.

  4. Would think that she is not like Gallen’s 1st wife, or Donnie Yen’s 1st wife(?), or Jet Li’s 1st wife (?), etc. She wanted out for greener pastures. However, from this recent report, perhaps, it seemed that more brickbats were thrown at her than would be fair to her. Should be more the case that time was hard then, she could not take it and she decided not stick to her man (not like the other 1st wifes), so, hardly to be pitied or sympathesised for being as having to struggle …. only to have the 2nd wife take the reward.

    Cecilia of course is luckier

    1. @kangaroo

Well said and she should have struck by Nicky through thick and thin if she really loved him. But sadly, she cared more about money maybe so decided to snatch an even bigger fish. About little time together, before marrying him she should know that Nicky is helping to pay his father’s big debt so would be working a lot. She should have been more understanding and patient instead of cheating on him like that. Thinking back, maybe it is a blessing in disguise for him since he now met Cecilia whom seems like a more decent person. But I must say Cecilia got lucky and met Nicky at a more prosperous time in his life and career. You really do wonder if she met Nicky during the times when his career wass on the low and he was struggling, would Cecilia stick with Nicky through thick and thin? You truly wonder…

      1. @hetieshou like you mentioned, it’s all about timing. LSS met Nicky when his career rocketed. So LSS is the lucky girl. His ex was with Nicky when he was struggling financially. But if she had held on, she would get to enjoy what LSS is enjoying now…and Nicky would appreciate her. But I am also thinking if LSS would stick with Nicky if he is not so successful.

      2. @janet72 I remember during BBJX there was an interview where I think it was one of those very rare moments on TV that Nicky spoke of his past struggles and he broke down. LSS was next to him, they haven’t started dating since it was BBJX and she is not someone who shows emotion on her face. Not that she is blank but she is often 1 face but in that moment, she was tearing up. I think Nicky found in her a soul mate; after the whirldwind that is Ma Yashu who is very boisterous person, he now settles with someone more quiet. They may look similar but both wives are very different in personality. If Cecilia had wanted to marry rich, she could have done so since she has very little negative news and China has loads of rich super billionaires. And Nicky is head over heels in love with her, as he was with his 1st wife. Cecilia looks wooden but her tears shows she loves him the same. I hope this last. Will she stick by him if he was poor? I think so. She also seems less needy, less clingy than the 1st wife who was very openly affectionate. LSS is more reserved.

      3. @funnlim I believe that LSS is different from his 1st wife. Certainly I hope she will treasure him, loves him forever. It’s true that they met each other at different times in his life. Also LSS is young, pretty and she is riding high on her career right now. It’s not hard for her to marry someone rich. I think their marriage will work. I think you are talking about this video:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZK_Kk7mUy8

      4. @funnlim

I feel that Nicky and Cecilia definitely love each other but not sure if it is on the soul mate level. I have seen cases where couples are with each other through thick and thin but as life goes on, things and people change. The latest example is Selina from SHE. Her ex husband was with her through her burn accident and even wrote a book about it. He also teared up each time that accident was mentioned too. But in the end, they divorced which of course shocked everyone. Another shocking divorce was Tony Sun and Angel Han. They were very in love too and thought they would be together for life. But I heard that they divorced due to not having kids, rumors with co stars and Tony’s failing agency which caused him to be in great debt. I am sure their love was strong too,but sadly it did not seem to be enough for their marriage to last which does make me wonder if Cecilia would stay with Nicky if one day he became poor or less rich? You truly do not know how you would react until you are experiencing any particular situation. A marriage truly takes a lot to maintain in order to make it last and remain happy. I also hope their marriage will last a lifetime.

      5. @janet72
Yes, Cecelia did get lucky. However, they still have a lifetime ahead of them so anything can happen. I still wonder if Nicky suddenly hits another low point in his life and career in the future just like he did in the past, would Cecilia stick with him through thick and thin? You really do not know.

      6. @hetieshou Maybe if she (Ma Yau Shu) stick to Nicky, she would now be like the other 1st wifes (Gallen & co). If Cecilia was with Nicky then, maybe, she would be just like this 1st wife – Cecilia looks like pretty nice but you never know – I think there is this chinese saying that “something that is untested …..”

      7. @kangaroo
Well said and my thoughts exactly. You truly do not know the future and people can change based on the circumstances and obstacles that you shall face in life.

    1. @dramas4me perhaps a bit drunk. What he said was funny. I bet Nicky is waiting for the day Wallace marries. I bet Wallace entourage is besties will be awesome. Hu ge, Nicky, yuan Hong

      1. @funnlim I think you are right. WH was drunk a little bit here, but we got to see the cute side of him. He should get drunk once in a while in order for us to see that. Yes. I hope he will find someone nice and gets marry soon. It is fun to see the real him when he’s around his friends.

      1. @happybi
Why did you think Nicky cheated on Ada? I guess it is like how everyone thinks that Bosco cheated on Myoile which I doubt is true because if it was, I highly doubt she would remain friends with him and invite him to her wedding. Nicky’s ex was not loyal to him so maybe his divorce with her is a blessing.

That whole process is very confusing. I am confused too but am glad that Nicky finally got rid of her so he can marry Cecilia.

      2. @hetieshou Just remember reading about it when it happen so long ago!!! If it’s not true, that’ll be great as I do remember being disappointed in Nicky when it happened as not a fan of cheaters.

I do not find his ex wife pretty as there is something very plastic about her. I actually think Cece is not that pretty either. But there’s something about her that is simple and calm that I really like. but she has gotten prettier since BBJX.

      3. @happybi
Totally with you on this one. I don’t find his ex wife pretty at all actually I was so surprised when my mom showed me pics of the so called now rich foreign hubby she managed to snag for herself after this NW. But to be fair, Nicky Wu has never been good looking either but since people love his famous role so much, they automatically think he’s so hot now n he can do no wrong. I was LMAO when he was on that Xiao S show and he was on it and that woman went crazy over him like a fangirl. Actually pretentious and fake…Please!! LOL…
This Cece wife is not pretty either but she’s gotten prettier now cuz probably more $$$ and stylists around, that’s why no one is too ugly if they know how to style themselves. Ada Choi I still think is pretty even if she has aged a bit but she is pretty IMO of course. 🙂

      4. @kiki yes i was pretty surprised myself when she remarried that rich guy. But he is a low fan. They have different concept of what asian consider as pretty.

Heheheh i am one of those that consider Nicky good looking. His hair can be awful sometime but i am def. A fan of him. That was why I was disappointed when I thought he cheated on ada. Ada is pretty lor. My brother in law saw her a few time in HK and said she is pretty in person and nice too.

  5. I always thought Nicky and Ada broke up because he cheated on her? Same for Nicky ex wife who cheated on him. Nicky ex wife def. did not stick through thick and thin for sure. Good riddance.

Why the heck does he need to remarried that woman and divorce her again? Make not sense.. if they weren’t married then they weren’t married.. then he can register his marriage with someone else in Taiwan! Just weird if it’s true.
