Fugitive Arrested at Jacky Cheung’s Concert: “I Shouldn’t Have Come”

Jacky Cheung (張學友) is a singing legend and manages to still draw huge crowds to his concerts even 30 years after his debut. The 56-year-old’s fan base is enormous, encompassing young and old across the globe. Even a fugitive on the run could not resist attending Jacky’s concert, and was arrested by the police.

On April 7, Jacky’s concert in Nanchang drew a crowd of 50,000 people. Thinking he would not be noticed in the crowd, a 31-year-old fugitive from Zhangshu and his wife drove over one hour to attend the concert. Wanted by the police for a financial crime he had committed, the fugitive was arrested even before Jacky’s concert was over.

The on-site face recognition security systems picked up on the fugitive. When arrested by the police, the fugitive was shocked and could not understand what had happened. Afterward, he said, “If I knew it, I wouldn’t have come here!”

After the news broke, the public reacted with laughter. Some of Jacky’s fans even used his song titles to make fun of the situation: “I have to kiss you goodbye”, “If this is not real love,” and “One thousand sad reasons”. One fan praised, “I must say this man has good taste!”

  1. LOL. His answer was pretty funny.

But creepy how easy it is for cameras to catch criminals over there. Seriously, big brother is watching you

    1. @coralie
Surveillance cameras are ubiquitous in the free countries like USA as well. Let’s not forget Facebook harvesting personal info.

      1. @msxie0714 I’m not saying it’s not universal in other countries as well, but it’s hardly as efficient as the Chinese surveillance system. Being caught at a concert? That’s unheard of (though I haven’t googled enough of these cases to say for sure.)

      2. @coralie @msxie0714 It makes sense actually. I read an article (and heard it on the radio too) the other day that said in recent years, China has been spending more money on internal security than they have on their military, so having cameras installed in all their concert venues is not surprising…..just like it’s not surprising for those who speak out against the government to find hired thugs in unmarked cars at their door hauling them away sometimes within minutes from when they opened their mouths. There’s also the “social credit system” that China is planning on implementing (parts of it are already in effect) where citizen’s online activity will be monitored and how they behave will affect things such as whether they are allowed to go on public buses or trains, whether their children will be able to attend expensive schools, whether they will be allowed to stay at 5 star hotels or travel, etc….if you do stuff like buy too many video games or post too much on social media, you will get a lower social credit score (because these types of actions are viewed as overindulging in “lazy and idle” activities) whereas if you buy diapers or use coupons to buy household items online then you will get a higher score (buying diapers means that you’re a responsible parent while using coupons means that you’re conscientious about finances).

Yes, things like surveillance cameras and personal data being harvested is also being done in other countries (including here in the U.S., as the recent Facebook scandal proves), however not to the extent that China does it. When it comes to the “big brother is watching” game, China definitely takes the crown – no other country even comes close!

      3. @llwy12

The US has been the most technologically advanced nation and far surpasses China when it comes to the art of surveillance. Long before the Facebook revelations, Edward Snowden revealed the widespread and secretive means of government surveillance on US and foreign citizens. China used neighborhood watch groups, while the US had developed sophisticated instruments for spying activities. Who could have imagined spyware in the form of a fly? I’d give the crown to the US.

      4. @msxie0714 lol it’s not a race to see who’s better. One thing China is doing that trump over the U.S is they are installing surveillance everywhere now and use it main stream, we are talking every cross road, anywhere you can think of, for their citizens. U.S can’t do it outright everywhere because of privacy, China is like don’t care about privacy so their surveillance will be better lol. And they are catching up in term of technology, and even if their technology is worse than the US, so what? If they use them a lot more mainstream, it will be a lot more beneficial than just using them for special target.

      5. @msxie0714 I agree with @littlefish. Sure, technology in the U.S. may be better or more advanced, but in China, it’s more ubiquitous, which is the point this article alluded to in terms of sophisticated surveillance technology being installed in common places such as a concert venue or on the street corner or other places that ordinary citizens frequent. In China, it’s a “normal” part of life to be constantly monitored and tracked because the citizens have no say so the government can do whatever it wants…but here in the U.S., you can bet that if the government tried to do the same thing China does so blatantly, there will be not only lawsuits left and right but also possibly a revolt. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the U.S. isn’t possibly doing it because most likely they are (I’m sure those who grew up here like I did are not THAT naïve), but they are going to keep it secret because of privacy laws (which there are none in China by the way). Also, having the technology to collect the data is one thing but what is done with that data is another and that’s one of the biggest differences between China and the U.S. in this area – China’s technology may not be as advanced, but they have no qualms about collecting the information and readily using it to achieve whatever end goal they want (not necessarily having to do with crime-related issues) and the person whose info they used just has to “grin and bear it” whereas in the U.S., because of the various laws surrounding privacy, whatever data is collected cannot be used outright without proper consent otherwise all hell is going to break loose.

  2. At least his spent his last minutes of freedom doing something he loves xD #noregrets2018

  3. It is all Jacky Cheung’s fault, lol, hahaha. How dare he sing so darn good, and put on such spendid, legendary shows that a wanted fugitive took such a big risk to attend. His comment “I Shouldn’t Have Come”, is priceless, lol.

    1. @bubbletea Haha…I know, right? The guy’s response should’ve actually been this: “I waited until the flowers withered” to “come listen to [his] concert” out of “true love” for Jacky because as a fan I can’t “forget him” and I thought I was safe because I was “this close, that far” after all….now “after leaving” the concert I will be a “lonely man” for “the rest of time” who will “wake up dreaming” in a jail cell tomorrow…I can’t believe it! (haha…yes, shameless plugging of Jacky’s songs but as a fan, I couldn’t help myself, lol!)

      1. @llwy12 Sweeet!. I thought what the Jacky Cheung -loving fugitive said was priceless, but your comment takes the cake, haha. Seriously though, the man has excellent taste in listening to music and seeing a classic live performance. I hardly use such words to describe entertainers, but Jacky deserves all the accolades and then some. In all honesty, not many of the asian ebiz celebs are actor/singer at a very high level. In fact, they are okay at one talent, but horrible at the other. They are even mediocre at both, or simply bad at both. Jackie Cheung excels at both on an extremely high level. He has won every award there is to be won that matters in both the singing and acting awards events. Not a feat that many can boast of. The man is phenomenal. What makes me respect him though is his humbleness, his love for his family, his respect for his wife and everyone else and his appreciation for his fans without going overboard and coming across as fake. He knows he is loved, he knows he is handsome, famous, beyond wealthy, adored, even worshipped, but he is humble. A few of the idols can learn a thing or two from Jacky. That is the essence of Jacky Cheung

      2. @bubbletea Haha, thanks and well-said! Though technically not every award on the acting side, as that HKFA Best Actor award still eludes him despite 6 different nominations over the past 3 decades – but that precisely illustrates your point about Jacky being humble, as he has always said the reason he is not able to achieve more on the acting side (implying awards) is due to his own shortcomings, as he chose to focus on singing over acting. Whereas other artists may blame the establishment or the “rules” governing the awards game or other factors, he sees it as a very logical outcome based on his own career choice and therefore there is no one to blame but himself. And yet, he still puts 200% effort into every performance, whether singing or acting, and never wavers when it comes to how seriously he takes his work…just one of many examples: the album cover to Jacky’s latest Mandarin album “Wake Up Dreaming” (which came out 4 years ago) features him singing with microphone in hand while standing on a rocky platform with water splashing around him – most artists would film that type of cover in a studio with CG effects perhaps keyed onto the picture later….not Jacky though – he actually filmed that cover onsite at one of HK’s beaches, standing on real rocks with real water splashing around him while he sang a real song into the mike (the entire song in his real voice, no lip synching)…all this because he wanted his fans (and anyone who buys the album) to have an authentic experience (well, also because he’s a perfectionist in his own right and sets high standards for himself). I can’t think of a single artist who would go to that length to film an album cover, especially when he doesn’t have to, as everyone knows his album will sell well regardless. There are reasons why Jacky is so respected and revered by those within the industry as well as outside of it and that type of work ethic / attitude is definitely one of them!

  4. @llwy12 sorry, I forgot about the HKFA. He has won a Golden Horse award or two though. To win that is to achieve the pinnacle of awards. That is equivalent to bagging an Oscar. Imagine what Jacky would have accomplished had he put equal emphasis on his acting. Leslie Cheung had that great all round gift as well. Tony Leung has it too but he has basically shelfed his singing. With all the hundreds or thousands of singer/actor in the Asian ebiz, only a very small handful really excel at a top level of singing and acting. Jacky Cheung belongs to that rare and elite small group. Can you think of anymore at such a level?

      1. @jimmyszeto hmmm… If you are talking about Andy Lau, Andy is placed in some well written and directed movies, and he writes some very beautiful songs with soulful melodies. However, he is not a strong actor and his singing voice is not good. Truth be told, if Andy did not have all the dancing and prop segments, the cabaret performances and fancy costumes worn by himself and his onstage performers and the wonderfully choreographed dance numbers and set pieces, his concerts would be just meh…
He is mediocre at best as a singer/actor. He is very charasmatic and loved and revered by millions of fans though. His hard working ethic is second to none and he deseves kudos for that. Andy does work very, very hard, and he deserves to be admired for that.

      2. @bubbletea
I’m also not a fan of Andy Lau but he has all the awards so meets the criteria. I also do not like that he takes every scene and makes himself as centre piece but I suppose that’s the power he has these days. He is unwilling to pass the torch at any cost…

      3. See@jimmyszeto yes, Andy does have the awards. His golden horse award was more a gift award than anything else though. He does like to be the centre of attention. I suspect he has low self esteem and suffers from attention syndrome disorder. . Even when he is at an event with other A-list celebs, he has to do or say something to stand out above the rest.

      4. @bubbletea
Yeh. I was quite shocked when he won it that year. Thought it was nailed on Tony Leung again. I just don’t get Andy at all. Other superstars such as Tony Leung and Stephen Chow have decreased their output and have focused on quality over quantity as they have got better. Andy still likes to put himself in movies which has himself in every scene limiting support casts to minimal lines. Gordon Lam has shown ability to lead movies but has been held back by Andy for years.

      5. @jimmyszeto @bubbletea To be honest, I don’t like to use HK awards (whether in music, movies, or television) to determine an artist’s success because of the awareness of how the system works over there and how easy it is to rig / manipulate / skew the results (I don’t follow Taiwan’s awards as closely so not sure if Golden Horse or their other awards are similar). Just because an artist has a lot of awards doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best….the quality over quantity concept applies to awards as well…the most blatant example I can think of is Joey Yung – TVB (and the HK media to a certain extent) loves to boast the fact that Joey has won the JSG “Most Popular Female Singer” award more times than Anita Mui, thereby implying that she is somehow “better” than Anita because she won the award more times than her, but we all know that is far from true (and no, it’s not my assumption – I actually read this “assertion” in TVB Weekly a long time ago…yes, TVB was actually shameless enough to print it and yes I was outraged).

Personally, I don’t remember how many awards Jacky has gotten (yes, probably hard to believe considering how big a fan I am) because to me, it’s not the number of awards that counts but the significance of the awards. For example, to me, the 2 World Music Awards that Jacky received back in 1995 and 1996 for top album sales are enough to crush whatever awards he ever received in HK…also, which other artist in HK (or in Asia for that matter) has achieved what Jacky was able to in the 90s in terms of being ranked #2 in the WORLD for selling the most albums, especially when you consider #1 at that time was Michael Jackson and #3 was Madonna (both huge international names of course). Sure, Andy may have the “most” awards collectively but how many of those awards are of real significance / quality?

    1. @bubbletea @llwy12 @jimmyszeto Totally agree that Jacky deserves all the accolades he can get and awards quantity doesn’t equate to talent, passion and such.

Although I’m a bigger fan of Jacky and Andy, but Andy isn’t any less of talented singer and actor than Jacky. Unlike Jacky, Andy focuses more on acting. Just like Jacky, Andy is a perfectionist when it comes to acting or his movies. I truly believe that he performed all his heart and wished nothing more than show his trade to his audiences even if that takes him being in 119 mins of a 120 mins movie, lol. Just as Jacky put all of his soul in his concerts, songs and albums. Can Andy sings all Jacky’s songs well? No. Can Jacky performs and emotes all Andy’s roles? No. They’re both great at their crafts. Just as @llwy12 pointed out what Jacky said, he’s not as a “good” actor because he chose not to put 100% of his heart into it. Andy has always been a humble guy as well.

So really, they’re both great and rare in my book 🙂

      1. @jjwong I know you will not like what I have to say, humbleness and Andy in the same sentence is like putting a cat and a dog in a room who hate each other. Andy is not known in the cirles as humble, but he is known as a control freak, a narcissist and vain. Even famous producers and directors have described his work as a singer and actor as mediocre. He can’t really sing well, and his acting is not great either. However, Andy is good looking, enigmatic, charismatic and knows how to charm and draw in an audience. He is
box office gold. Jackie can sing the hell out of any Andy song, and can do justice to any Andy movie or TV role. That is why Jacky is such a rare quality. That is why people like myself @IIwy12 @jimmyszeto appreciate the man so much. We know quality when we see and hear it. Recently, I travelled to another country to see Jacky perform. I will hardly do that for an artist, so that should speak volumes. I also have a keen eye and ear for good acting and singing. Yes, Andy is revered and he has millions of fans out there and he lives up to the image as a man who loves his fans and goes out of the way for his fans and friends and upcoming artists, but an image is a powerful thing, especially when displayed in an adoring, positive manner.

      2. @bubbletea
We all know Jacky Cheung is a living legend and is appreciated by all Chinese and Hong Kong people. I’m not sure about his character because he keeps a low profile and is a family. His wife I’ve heard is difficult to deal wity but he has stood by her and is a real man and father. I don’t think we can compare anyone as equal in singing ability in Hong Kong and I’m sure the singers themselves knows he can’t be surpassed. Let’s move on to Andy. I like his acting in the 1980’s though he was the weakest of the 5 Tigers in my opinion. Based on recent years he has really focused on himself and tried to not let anyone steal his limelight in any of his movies. He has not used his influence or power to promote new talented actor/actresses in his movies. As terrible a character Stephen Chow is, he has at least realised his sell by date as an actor and knows the stage belongs to the youngsters and have brought out new blood. Also all this secrecy of Andy mentioning actresses he has fancied in the past and letting rumours ride while he was married and his protectiveness of them is all seen in a positive light because his name is Andy Lau. He can do no wrong. Andy Lau is a control freak. I think he wants to write, script, produce, action design, sing the theme song, direct and act in every scene of his movies. I will be surprised if he will allow his wife and children to speak to anyone but himself…..

      3. @jimmyszeto yes, Jacky’s wife can be a difficult woman but, like you said, Jacky stood by her side, all these years. He never tried to mold her into a yes, quiet, subservient obedient woman. He accepted her and her negatives ways. That is called love, confidence and total acceptance. I could not have said the rest of what you said any better. Andy needs to let go a little on the showbiz reigns and promote younh up and coming singers and actors. As indifferent as Stephen Chow is, he does promote newbies and seasoned artists by giving them a chance. Wish Andy w o.j. uld be more open to step aside and do that, insteaf of deliberately hogging the limelight
It would nvm e such a great gesture on his part.

      4. @bubbletea Lol! Jacky can be the great legend without putting down others. We all have our preferences. Just because you prefer Jacky over everyone or Andy and I don’t doesn’t not mean your taste is any better. Look, I’m not saying Jacky is any less awesome. Trust me. I too know know quality when I see and here it too. Anyways, let’s agree to disagree. /peace out
