Jacky Cheung and Beyoncé to Sing “The Lion King” Duet for Chinese Market

Both superstars in their own right, the two singers will lend their voices for the Disney classic hit.

Disney’s The Lion King <獅子王> premiered in Chinese cinemas on July 13. Beyoncé, who is also the voice of Nala in the film, along with Jacky Cheung (張學友), perform a historic duet for the movie soundtrack “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”. Excited fans have called it the “collaboration of the century”.

Beyoncé and Donald Glover are the singers of the official American version of the song, which has already been released.

Originally sang by legendary British singer and pop icon Elton John, the song was released in 1994 to great popularity, clinching best original song at the Oscars and Golden Globe Awards subsequently. Elton John won the Best Male Pop Vocal Performer at the Grammy’s that year.

In China, the animated film had premiered to good response since Friday with box office takings of up to $270 million HKD in two days, and will likely break the record set by Beauty and the Beast in 2017.

    1. @ricky721 The song isn’t out yet, but Disney did post a 15 second teaser version on their Weibo site (link below). As a huge Jacky fan, I’m super excited about this collaboration, especially since The Lion King is also one of my favorite Disney movies. Listening to the 15 second version is already enough to get me teary-eyed….pretty sure I will probably lose it when the full version comes out, lol.

  1. Posted YouTube audio clip of Jacky Cheung and Beyonce’s rendition of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”.

  2. Omg, yes! Super excited and happy!!! Though doesn’t it feels like Jacky is “dubbed”? He sounds great and melts with B, but he sounds “supporting.” His other duets, Canto, Mando or English, he was strong and vibrant than this one. Anyone knows if they did actually duet together in studio or did B redid the song? Or was it just Jacky singing to a track? @llwy12 ??

    1. @jjwong Sorry, been a bit behind so just saw this now.

From what I know, both of them recorded their parts separately and it was edited together afterwards — so no, it’s not truly a “duet” in the sense that they didn’t record the song together in a studio.

I honestly would much rather Jacky record his own solo version rather than this “duet” version. Of course, his singing as well as Beyonce’s are both undeniably great and whether separately or together, they both sound awesome, but the song itself definitely sounds “edited” and just a tad bit odd in sections (as though the person editing it faltered here and there), which is such a disservice to 2 truly great singers.

With all that said, I still love the song of course, but I’m hoping Jacky comes out with a solo, “unedited” version too…I mean, Beyonce already has her solo version with the official one she recorded for the movie, so it only makes sense for Jacky to release his own solo Chinese version. Keeping my fingers crossed! 🙂

      1. @llwy12 No worries, mate. I knew you would have some insight 🙂 You and me both on Jacky solo of the song! So it’s the editing that didn’t quite mesh their voices.

Slightly off tangent – would’ve love love love Jacky duet, true duet, with Celine Dion on Beauty and the Beast.
