Joyce Cheng Gets Emotional on Anniversary of Mother’s Passing

Today marks the 12-year anniversary of Lydia Shum’s (沈殿霞) passing due to liver cancer. In memory of her mother, Joyce Cheng (鄭欣宜) shared an emotional post about still missing her mother despite the many years that have passed. Joyce recounts the life lessons she had learned from her late mother, and wishes she is still there to witness special moments together.

Message to Mother

Writing in the style of a letter, Joyce imagines what if Lydia were still alive? “So many shows we’d binge watch together, you’d love them! There’s this thing called Netflix now, it’s great. Though… it’d probably take you a while to figure out how to use it.”

As Joyce reflects on her mother’s legacy, she refers to Lydia’s ideology, “Live until you’re old; learn until you’re old.” Joyce adds, “It’s been 12 years since you’ve left us. Many people think I should ‘get over it’. But I will never get over losing you. How can I? You were such an inspiration to all.”

Joyce added, “I imagine Hong Kong would need your magic now. But guess what? We can always find you again through the work that you left us with. Your music, your movies, your talk-shows… Thank you again for giving your life to entertainment. You truly are a legend.”

Close Mother-Daughter Relationship

When Joyce was eight months old, Lydia filed divorce with ex-husband Adam Cheng (鄭少秋) since he was still involved with his ex-girlfriend. Raising Joyce by herself, Lydia dedicated her life to giving only the best to her daughter.

While Lydia was battling health issues, she had said that Joyce is the only person that she couldn’t bear to leave behind and would ask her trusted friends in the entertainment circle to look after Joyce. In 2008, Lydia passed away at the age of 62 when Joyce was only 21 years old.

Although Lydia is no longer with her, Joyce continued her mother’s footsteps and joined the entertainment industry as a singer/ actress.  Joyce said that her mother is her role model and they are similar because of their passion for their work.

  1. it’s a good thing that lydia had some good friends to help her look after her daughter. one could only imagine the amount of sorrow to leave you most beloved child behind when you could no longer take care of her.

  2. It’s hard to believe that 12 years have already passed since Lydia left us….times goes by so quickly nowadays! Of course Joyce is going to miss her mother – heck, even I miss her and I have no relation to her whatsoever (aside from being a HK entertainment junkie who grew up watching her on TV). Lydia truly was an inspiration to many people…I’m sure those of us who were fortunate enough to be around when she was most active in her career and got to see her “magic” in person or on screen, will never forget her. I am so happy to see Joyce finally coming into her own, both career-wise and as a strong, independent woman…Lydia, if she were still here, would be so proud!

  3. she is very well missed i am currently rewatching A Recipe For The Heart – 美味天王 miss hearing her laugh….and Joyce is strong she’ll be okay in the run…….
