Zhou Dongyu and Yang Mi Become Victoria’s Secret Spokesmodels
Known for employing tall and beautiful models for their ads and commercials, lingerie label Victoria’s Secret recently featured Chinese actresses Zhou Dongyu (周冬雨) and Yang Mi (杨幂) in their ad promotions in the Greater China Region, marking the first time they have used actresses as their spokesmodels.
Thinly-built and only 5-feet-3-inches tall, Zhou Dongyu’s childlike face stands out from the crowd – especially compared to Victoria’s Secret’s past Asia spokespersons, Ming Xi (奚夢瑤) and He Sui (何穗).
Knowing that she doesn’t possess the typical supermodel physique, Zhou Dongyu she expressed, “I may not be textbook sexy. I know I don’t have those looks. However, to me – sexy means being comfortable and able to express it naturally. We define the meaning of being sexy – and it’s not the meaning that defines us. Being your most comfortable self – that’s what’s sexy.”
While Zhou Dongyu broke the lingerie brand’s tradition of using supermodels, her new ad spreads were met with both praise and negative criticism. While many netizens applauded the 28-year-old actress for her positive attitude, some said her photos didn’t exude a certain Victoria’s Secret vibe. Some netizens commented on how Zhou Dongyu looked like a child playing dress up, pointing out her figure to be lacking curves. Others said Zhou Dongyu’s look is more relatable to the general female population, and said that being flat-chested is a different type of sexy.

I can’t see Yang Mi as sexy, either. But I love what Zhou Dong Yu said about you defining what sexiness is and not the other way around. I agree with that.
And VS is really trying hard to grab at straws these days to stay alive. Their sales have plummeted dramatically these last few years. Hoping to start afresh in China means needing to invest in hot celebrities.

@coralie if you ask me 3yrs ago about whether ZDY is sexy, I’ll flat out say no. But the above photos do show a homie kind of sexy? Like your gf sexy, not a celebrity out of reach kind of sexy. I saw ZDY as a healthy, young attractive girl that is just starting on the road to become a woman. YM is sexy but at the same time, she looks old and worn out lol, not as vibrantly happy as ZDY, and in that sense, ZDY is sexy lol.

@jimmyszeto…Yes, far from it…. lol haha..No way!! They must be crazy picking such models and they probably picked them for popularity and not anything else.
VS models are too out of this world pretty. they are going the casual route to expand their business so people could actually seen themselves in their wears instead of endlessly lamenting they could never be that model on the catalog. CK is going this route too as I saw many plus size models. inclusivity.

In the new world of everything is beautiful, just embracing the model look, the exotic beauty will alienate their future market.

@luye all I know is I walked in there once to check it out because I love their fashion show. But once I saw the price tag I’m like I’ll stick with the fashion and never bother with them xD not like I have the body for it anyway xD

VS and Starbucks are two businesses i never understood how they ever picked up. Both are crazy expensive for what they sell.
@m0m0 Starbucks tastes meh lol. Their drinks lack the oomph (I.e coffee lack the coffee flavour, matcha lacks the green tea taste), and just overly sweet and sickening. I think I had like 2-3 drinks out of them in the last 10yrs lol. Yet they are still going strong -.-
I find Zhou Dongyu very beautiful in a unconventional way. She doesn’t have the “standardized” look every Chinese and Korean actors have these days.
But VS seems to be a mismatch for her..
