2016 TVB Sales Presentation Surprises with Sci-fi Drama “You Who Came from the Kitty Star” and “Super Trio” 20th Anniversary

About 190 TVB artistes attended the 2016 TVB Sales Presentation on Tuesday, November 10. The event, which introduces TVB’s upcoming drama and variety program lineup to advertisers, announced 15 up-and-coming television dramas and many brand-new variety programs, including the revival of game show Super Trio <獎門人>. The telecast of the event will air on November 15.

“Ghost of Relativity” Cast Regroups for “You Who Came From the Kitty Star”

At the sales presentation, TVB showed the trailers of 15 proposed and upcoming television dramas scheduled to broadcast in late 2015 and throughout the year of 2016. Each with three dramas under their belt, Nancy Wu (胡定欣), Linda Chung (鐘嘉欣), and Sisley Choi (蔡思貝) are expected to dominate the small screens next year. Moses Chan (陳豪), Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), and Tony Hung (洪永城) have two dramas each.

Benz Hui (許紹雄), Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼), Michael Miu (苗僑偉), Elena Kong (江美儀), and Sharon Chan (陳敏之) will be returning for the sequel of last year’s hit series, Line Walker <使徒行者>. The web drama was first announced at the Tencent Video V Horizon conference on November 6, and will be TVB’s co-production with Mainland China’s Penguin Pictures. As the drama is still in pre-production stages, the cast has not yet been finalized, and it is unsure if original cast member Raymond Lam (林峯) will also return.

The production that surprised audiences the most, however, was You Who Came from the Kitty Star <來自喵喵星的妳>, a sci-fi drama inspired by the popular Korean drama, My Love from the Star <來自星星的你>. The cast of supernatural drama Ghost of Relativity <鬼同你OT>, including Moses Chan, Nancy Wu, Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) and Vivien Yeo (楊秀惠), are expected to return for You Who Came from the Kitty Star. The sci-fi comedy will be about a cat (Kristal) who turns into a human and meets her owner (Nancy).

Other dramas introduced at the presentation included The Last Healer In Forbidden City (Roger Kwok, Tavia Yeung), House of Spirits (Bobby Au-yeung, Nancy Wu), Presumed Accidents (Lawrence Ng, Sisley Choi), Fashion War (Moses Chan, Sisley Choi), Brother’s Keeper II (Edwin Siu, Kristal Tin), A Fist Within Four Walls (Ruco Chan, Nancy Wu), Angel In-the Making (Tony Hung, Eliza Sam), Legal High (Alex Fong Chung-sun, Liu Kai-chi), K9 Cop (Bosco Wong, Linda Chung), and more.

“Super Trio” Returns for 20th Anniversary

In the variety department, TVB announced that Eric Tsang’s (曾志偉) Super Trio game show series, which supposedly ended with its tenth series in January 2014, will be returning soon for its 20th anniversary. The game show, which invites famous celebrities, first premiered on December 20, 1995, and was originally hosted by Eric Tsang, Jerry Lamb (林曉峰), Jordan Chan (陳小春), and Chin Ka Lok (錢嘉樂).

Television presenter turned actor Tony Hung will continue to expand his hosting career with the second series of his travelogue program, Not Far But Away <在那遙遠的地方>. Tony visited North Korea in the first series, which won My Favorite TVB Informative Program at the StarHub TVB Awards 2015 in October.

In addition to Tony, actresses Alice Chan (陳煒), Priscilla Wong (黃翠如) and Elena Kong will also get their own, tailor-made variety programs. Alice, who practices culinary art, will be hosting a food program, temporarily titled Alice’s 100 Dishes <陳煒的100道風味>. Priscilla will host No Vacations <世界打工冇假期>, and Elena will host Wives of the World <環球人妻檔案>.

Other up-and-coming programs include Sunday Drama King <Sunday好戲王>, King of Magicians <魔王之王>, I Am Boss 2 <我要做老闆2>, and more.

Kenneth Ma Absent In Sales Presentation Trailers, Wayne Lai to Star In New Sitcom

Rumored to be frozen by TVB due to his refusal to extend his contract, Kenneth Ma (馬國明) disproved these claims when he showed up at the press conference for TVB’s upcoming police procedural ICAC Investigators 2016 <廉政行動2016> a few days ago. Although Kenneth attended the sales presentation, and even stood among the first row of artistes in the group photo, he will not be starring in any of the dramas presented at the event.

Like Kenneth, Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) was also absent in the sales presentation trailers, but he revealed that he will be starring in an upcoming sitcom with his Off Pedder <畢打自己人> costar, Teresa Mo (毛舜筠). The new sitcom will begin principal photography in February, and will take over the time slot of Come Home Love <愛·回家> when it ends its run in March.

NO, PLEASE DO NOT REVIVE SUPER TRIO!!!!  That show overstayed its welcome long ago and the last few years it was around were absolute TORTURE, especially for those of us who knew and loved the first 3 years of the original show back in the mid-90s (1995 to 1998 or so).  TVB:  please STOP messing with classic series and variety programs already – we don’t need you guys tarnishing the great memories of the ‘good old days’ by constantly screwing everything up!!!

@llwy12 agree torture is exactly the word to describe this show. it was funny in the beginning but the trio lost their charm years ago,it seems tvb still lacking creativity and continueing on focus the past glories.

Sadly they don’t have the creativity to create a new show and I believe it stems from the lack of personnel who could fill that hole. We will just have to make do with the Super Trio.

Yawn! Boring! Trust tvb to ride on the supernatural band wagon just becos GOR did relatively “well” among its dramas. Now we’re going to see a slew of such dramas next yr with Blue Veins, House of Spirits and you who came from the stars which will reunite the cast of GOR no less. ….yawn….yawn….And did i read that Sisley is going to be in 3 dramas? By golly! More crap!

@janet72 Yes, I completely agreed with you. Can’t stand her whiny voice and she doesn’t “talk”, she “shout”. TVB, please if you want to cast her, kindly dubbed her part and spare me the agony of “listening”to her.

tvb please stop producing variety shows about eating and traveling why always the same again and again? if you dont have good ideas then just copy some succesful foreign variety shows.

no wonder kenneth dont want to sign contract, who wants to be chained with a 10 years contract? tvb digs his own grave with this policy, maybe it works for newbies but not for top fadan and siu san’s.

“The sci-fi comedy will be about an alien (Kristal) who lands on earth and befriends a human (Nancy).”

Sounds like an old TVB series The Superpower where Chow Yun Fat played an alien who came to the earth and befriended a human played by Tony Leung Chiu Wai. TVB is out of ideas and leadings. Same old people (cast) work together again.

I never heard of that TVB show you mention until I look it up on Wikipedia and I’m a long time TVB fan.

@mdo7 Not sure how you define “long-time”….if your “long-time” is back in the 80s, you should’ve heard of the series that nori is referring to, as the series is from 1983.   The Chinese name of the series is  天降財神 and it stars Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung, Patricia Chong, Chan Man Yee, etc.  Nori is correct about the premise – CYF plays an alien with superpowers who lands in HK and Tony’s character ends up ‘using’ his powers to help him get ahead in life.  This is one of the few TVB series (actually, the ONLY TVB series if my memory serves me right) where Tony takes on a semi-villain role.

Anyway, I agree that TVB is running out of ideas, as the alien coming to earth concept has been done before. The other problem is that TVB severely lacks talent right now, so even if similar series, it won’t have same success due to the cast being sub par.

@llwy12 I’ve watched a lot of TVB shows from the 80’s trust me, I’ve never heard of The Superpower (if it was a underrated show, then that’s why I never heard of it), and I’m not sure if that show ever got dubbed in Vietnamese like other TVB show I’ve watched in the past.

That reminds me, somebody asked on Quora why no other Asian countries (well maybe except Taiwan) can’t make a good drama on the same level as Korean one:

        https://www.quora.com/How-can-other-countries-produce-great-TV-series-like-the-KDrama-Why-are-Korean-dramas-so-outstanding-I-myself-cant-sleep-for-days-watching-them

I mean K-dramas are doing something that HK dramas has never done. It also baffle me why TVB has not bought remake right for remaking/adapting K-dramas when other Asian countries are doing them.

        @mdo7

Also baffle me why you want TVB to remake K-dramas so much? So what if other Asian countries are doing it? Let them be.
Rather watch old TVB series then some K-drama remakes.

Besides remakes of K-dramas, is it also necessary to latch on to the ‘stars’ for series/movie titles? There are now several c-drama titles with similar starry titles.

Gosh the combination of leads gets stranger and stranger every year, nevertheless, looking forward to what they will do with Line Walker 2, so not sure if Raymond Lam will be in it aye? Just give a phone call to Louis Koo, he still owes like 40 episodes to TVB (allegedly lol). Nice seeing Alex Fong and Liu Kai Chi. Already planning to skip the Tony Hung lead ones, and also with TVB stop shelving No Reserve already please, release it.

Just hoping that 2016, will have quality dramas where I can’t wait to watch the next one.

    -cheers-

“The production that surprised audiences the most, however, was You Who Came from the Kitty Star , a sci-fi drama inspired by the popular Korean drama, My Love from the Star .”

Uh, TVB why didn’t you just buy the remake right rather then just downright plagiarizing it. I mean the Philippines and Latin America are much poorer then Hong Kong yet they’re able to purchase remake right for K-dramas for a cheap fee. The Phillipines is much poorer then Hong Kong yet they’re able to purchase rights and remake Korean dramas.

@mdo7 Yup, even Korea has recently gotten into this act. They recently paid a bundle to purchase the rights to Cdrama Bu Bu Jing Xing and currently are in production for the remake.

Now, if the old TVB dramas (80s 90s) were purportedly so good, how come no one has purchase the rights for remake?

I feel like ‘You Who Came From The Kitty Stars’ will end up being a recycled storyline drama, there doesn’t seem to be much originality to it if you ask me..
Also I hope Raymond Lam will end up being back in Line Walker 2, I really liked the pairing with Charmaine, if not, I’d like Bosco to take his place, I think they would be a god pairing too!

@dramadrama: Yes yes, Ruco to take over Raymond Lam’s role. But maybe Charmaine may look a little too old for Ruco. She does look older than Raymond in Line Walker 1.
Give Ruco any role and he sure won’t disappoint !!!

It is hilarious that TVB is attempting to remake a Korean idol drama with the aging and plain-looking personnel they have (who are mostly 8-por drama actors). Is this their lame attempt to appeal to the millenial audience. Even their remake title sounds stupid:You who from the Kitty Star. Is their target audience are the one still play with Hello Kitty?

They’d be better off do a spin-off like My Love from the Star; the Previous Generation. LOL!!

@aiya Maybe because it is meant to be a comedy.

      • aiya replied:

@funnlim I believe you meant a parody because the original Kdrama already was a comedy with very sophisticated humors actually.

I guess TVB can do the reverse by casting their middle-aged actors and rewrite the script to reflect crass canto street humors.
